CHAPTER THREE
(time skip to when thomas arrives)
Before she knew it, it was the day they got a Greenie and more supplies. Things have been going like normal, and they still haven't found anything new in the maze yet.
The newest Greenie they got is Chuck, and in Lizzie's opinion, he is so adorable. She hated that the Creators sent up someone as young as he is. The Creators probably didn't even care how young he was. The Creators is who Lizzie and the other Gladers call whoever sends up the Box.
Things were slightly different since Newt was not a Runner anymore because of the limp he now had. Now he's the keeper of the Track-Hoes, which are just the gardeners. He's great at that job, but Lizzie could tell that he missed being a Runner sometimes.
Whenever she heard the alarm of the Box, she left the Med-Jack hut with Clint and Jeff. Then, she headed over to the Box, seeing that everyone else was doing the same thing.
"Okay, someone open up the Box." Alby said as he put his hands on his hips.
Two boys opened up the Box, and in the Box was a boy their age with hazel eyes and brown hair.
He had his arm covering his eyes, blocking the sun that was blinding him, and it was obvious he was scared. Lizzie didn't blame him. She was just as frightened as he was when she first got there. She had hidden in the Box for a few hours until Minho jumped down and convinced her to get out.
Murmurs filled the air along with laughter, and Lizzie rolled her eyes. Some of these boys still didn't have any manners. It annoyed her so much. She went to step forward to greet the Greenie like she usually does, but Gally jumped down in the Box before she could.
Gally smirks. "Day one, Greenie."
Lizzie bit her lower lip as she watched the Greenie get thrown to the ground after he was out of the Box. The brunette-haired boy looked up at them as some of the Gladers laughed, apparently finding his scared expression amusing. Lizzie hated how the boys were treating him and because of how they were treating the Greenie, she wanted to punch them. She watched the Greenie scrambled to get up and immediately take off running. Some of the boys then started joking around.
"Looks like we got a Runner!" Zart yelled.
Lizzie winces when the Greenie tripped over his feet and falls to the ground. Lizzie rolled her eyes as the boys cheered. The Greenie stood up slowly and turned around, looking at the four walls that trapped him in with fear.
Gally was in charge of getting the supplies out and had some of the boys helping him with that while everyone else went to work. Alby had decided that they should put the Greenie in the pit for a while.
Since no one has gotten hurt yet, and she already cleaned the Med-jack hut. So, Lizzie went over to see if Gally and the others needed some help with the supplies.
"Hey, Lizzie, over here."
She looked over in the direction she heard Alby call for her. She jogged over to where Alby and the Greenie were standing.
She sent them a smile, tilting her head to the side. "What's up?"
"Wait, I thought there were only boys here." The Greenie said, furrowing his eyebrows as he looked at Lizzie.
"Well, surprise." Lizzie points at herself. "You thought wrong 'cause I'm not a boy."
Alby chuckles as he pats Lizzie's shoulder. "Lizzie, here, is the only girl. She's the best Med-Jack we ever had."
Lizzie glances at her feet, a shy smile tugging on her lips. "Awe, thanks." She looks up at the Greenie and smiles. "It's nice to meet you."
The Greenie nods, sending her a small smile. "You too."
"Hey, you guys alright?" A British voice asked.
She looks over in the direction she heard the familiar voice and smiles when she notices Newt walking over to them. "Doing great." She replied, and he smiled.
"This is Newt," Alby smiles while he put his hand on the blonde's shoulder. "He's in charge when I'm not around."
Newt chuckles. "It's a good thing you're always around then."
"Awe, Newtie," Lizzie calls him the nickname only she called him. She called him that nickname the first time she arrived in the Glade. At first she only called him that to tease him, but it just stuck ever since then. The brunette-haired girl sends him a teasing smile when he looks at her with raised eyebrows. "You finally agree with me on that."
Newt rolls his eyes playfully. "Yeah, whatever, Lee." He said, using the nickname he only used. Lizzie chuckled and shook her head.
"Listen," Newt looks at the Greenie with an amused expression. "That was some dash you made earlier," He compliments after he shakes the Greenie's hand. "For a second there, I thought you had the chops to be a Runner...Until you face-planted." Lizzie chuckled along with Alby and Newt.
The Greenie looks at the three of them with confusion. "Wait, Runner?"
"Do me a favor, go find Chuck." Alby said to Newt. He glances at Lizzie, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Lizzie is going to give you a tour while I go make sure those Shanks are getting all the supplies out."
Lizzie and Newt exchanged a glance. They knew this was Alby's way of changing the subject. None of them liked telling the Greenies about the job of Runners since most of the time, they usually want to be one. And being a Runner isn't the best idea at times. Newt waved goodbye to her, Alby, and the Greenie before he left to find Chuck. Alby pats Lizzie's shoulders before he walks off to the Box, and the Greenie turns to Lizzie.
"Well, welcome to the Glade," Lizzie starts walking around, gesturing the Greenie to follow. The Greenie had been glancing at the four walls when Lizzie gestured for him to follow her, and when he glanced at her, he realized she had already started walking away, so he was quick to follow her.
"So, this is where we eat, we sleep there, we also grow our food there, and even build our own shelter." She listed off everything she pointed to where they were as she led him to the Watch Tower.
"You afraid of heights?" She asked, climbing up the latter.
"Not that I know of." The Greenie replied as he climbed up after her.
"What's out there?" He questioned, pointing at the open doors. She leaned against the railing, debating if she should tell him or not.
"Look, Greenie, we only have three rules," Lizzie told him, and he looked at her with curiosity.
"Rule one, do your part because there's a lot to do, and no time for people slacking. Rule two, never harm another Glader. We have to trust each other, but if we don't, everything would be chaos. And last but not least," She points at the nearest wall, speaking in a stern tone and even putting emphasis on the word 'never'. "Never go beyond those walls."
"You understand that?" She asked, hoping he would obey the rules. The Greenie slowly nodded.
****
Lizzie was in the Homestead, fixing her hammock since the rope came undone somehow. Chuck was fixing up the Greenie's hammock and telling him what happens when you go out of the Box. Lizzie tilted her head to the side, noticing that the Greenie kept staring at the open doors, which worried her. She hoped that he wouldn't try to get inside the maze. But unfortunately, the Greenie seemed like the kind of person who would do something like that no matter how many times he was told no.
She sighed as she finished fixing her hammock and looked over to where the Greenie was. Her eyes grew wide when he started walking towards the doors, and she quickly ran after him with Chuck following her.
"Greenie, you're not supposed to go out there." She throws her arms up out of frustration. "Did you not listen to anything I told you earlier?"
"I just wanna look at it." That was all Greenie said before he walked past her and Chuck. Lizzie and Chuck shared a worried look, and they followed the Greenie.
"You can look around all you want," Chuck comments. "But you can't go out there."
The Greenie looks at the open doors with curiosity. "Why not? What's out there?"
"You don't want to know...Trust me." Lizzie sighed, crossing her arms. A smile tugged on her lips when she noticed Minho and Ben running back.
"Hey, Z." Minho greeted, waving at her. Lizzie back waved at him, looking at him with a smile which made him smile a bit. She had to admit her heart fluttered when he used the nickname only he used.
"Hey, Chuck." Ben nods at the young boy and then notices the Greenie. "New Greenie, huh? How does it feel to be promoted?"
Chuck smiles. "It feels great, Ben." They run past them and to the hut where they mapped out the maze.
The Greenie looks at Chuck and then at Lizzie with confusion. "I thought no one was allowed to leave."
Lizzie nods. "That's true. Only the Runners are allowed to leave."
"Yeah," Chuck agrees. "They know more about the maze than anyone."
The Greenie's eyes widened, looking at Chuck with surprise and confusion. Lizzie facepalmed, knowing she should've told Chuck not to say anything about the maze to the Greenie.
"Wha-The what?" He asked, glancing at Lizzie with furrowed eyebrows. When she avoided his gaze, he looked back at Chuck in hopes that he might tell him what he wanted to know.
"What?" Chuck looked back at him nervously.
"The maze. You just said maze." The Greenie pointed at him.
"I-I did?" Chuck nervously chuckled.
The Greenie nods. "Uh, yeah."
Lizzie saw how the Greenie looked at the doors to the maze with curiosity which made her worried. Curiosity killed the cat, and in this case, curiosity might kill the Greenie if he makes the stupid decision to go into the maze.
A/N thomas is now here, yay! things will now be a lot more interesting lol
