CHAPTER TEN
The group runs around a corner with Thomas leading them. Lizzie was in front, running alongside Minho and Teresa. They run past section three, and past the place that Minho called Blades when Thomas told them they were almost there.
They hid behind a wall suddenly. "Is it a Griever?" Chuck asked Thomas who looked down at the hallway seeing a Griever at the other end.
"Yeah." Thomas replied.
"Here, take this Chuck." Minho handed Chuck the device they got from the Griever Thomas killed.
"Make sure you stay behind us." Thomas told him, putting his hand on Chuck's shoulder.
Teresa smiles reassuringly at him while putting her hair up into a pony tail. "Just stick with me, Chuck."
"Pretty sure it will activate the door to open. We have to stick together. We get out now, or we die trying." Thomas said, looking at the Gladers. "Ready?" He asked everyone.
Lizzie grins as she got her weapon that was a knife out while everyone got ready. "Let's go!" Thomas yelled and everyone ran around the corner.
The floor they ran on a walkway, and each side of it was emptiness where she had a feeling Grievers were at. The group ran at the Griever, aiming their weapons at it. Many of them had long sticks that they used to hit the Griever with, trying to knock it over the edge while not trying to fall off the other edge in the process.
The Griever grabbed one of the Gladers, throwing him over the edge. One of the legs broke through the floor right in front of Lizzie and Teresa. They used their weapons to cut it, but they accidentally knocked the device out of Chuck's hand, sending it flying away, landing a few feet away from them. Chuck ran towards the device, and Lizzie panicked. "Chuck!" She yelled as she and Teresa ran after him, making sure he wouldn't fall off while the others kept the Griever distracted.
Chuck manages to get the device before it fell over the edge just as a Griever from below started climbing up to where he was. "Oh no." He mumbled. Lizzie and Teresa quickly pulled him back up, and away from the edge. Lizzie looked over at the others to see they knocked the Griever off. The three of them ran back to the others when two Grievers started climbing up on either side.
They run towards the door while the others quickly tried to keep the Grievers away. The wall open and Chuck grins. "It worked."
"Go!" Thomas exclaimed as he and some of the others held off the Grievers.
Lizzie hoped that they would eventually follow them as they ran down the hallway to, and into a dark tunnel. It was small, and at the end of it they found a metal door. They immediately tried looking for a way out as the other Gladers started making their way back to them.
She glances over her shoulder, seeing that they were losing a few of the Gladers. She looked back at the door when it lit up with different numbers. "It's a code." Lizzie realized and Teresa nodded.
Teresa steps to the end of the tunnel and yells, "Thomas, it's a code! Eight numbers!"
"Minho, what's the sequence?" Thomas questioned, glancing over at Minho.
As Minho listed the sequence, Lizzie quickly put in the numbers. She was half way through when she heard them yell for Minho which worried her. She turned around, her eyes widening when she saw a Griever on top of him. She watched with wide eyes as Jeff rushed forward somehow getting the Griever off of Minho while the others backed up towards the tunnel.
She frowns and her eyes tear up as the Grievers took Jeff away. Jeff was one of her closest friends and a fellow Med-Jack. He would forever be missed. "Minho, please tell me you're okay." Lizzie pleaded while Minho moved to stand besides her.
He's nervous and scared, but tries not to show it. He shakily breaths, and he sends her a smile to help reassure her. "Yeah. I'm fine." He reassured her. She wasn't for sure if he was trying to reassure her or himself, but seeing that he didn't look hurt and the fact he was standing beside her alive made her feel a bit more calm.
Teresa finished putting in the rest of the numbers as Minho listed them off as he moved to the front with the others to help keep the Grievers away. Lizzie let out a sigh of relief as it said 'complete'. They turned around when they saw the walls coming down, crushing each of the Grievers. Thomas threw his weapon at the last Griever, just as it was crushed by the wall.
Lizzie's eyes widened when the opening Minho and the others were in front of suddenly closed and then it was pitch dark. Lizzie watched the door opened a bit and Teresa leaned forward to open it all of the way. She squinted as a bright light shine through. They all hesitantly walked through the open door. On each side of them was a dark hallway and she wasn't for sure how to feel about it. Minho intertwined his hand with hers, squeezing her hand to try and let her know everything would be okay even though he wasn't for sure.
They looked over when the light came on in each hallway. They walk down the hallway on their left as Minho still held onto Lizzie's hand. The group ends up at a door and near it had two light bulbs. One was lit green at the moment and Lizzie also noticed above the door said 'exit'.
"Seriously?" Frypan asked in disbelief, not believing it was that easy to escape.
"That's all it is?" Lizzie questions, raising her eyebrows. "Okay, come on." She scoffs. "After escaping Grievers all we have to do is open a door that says 'exit' and walk out?" She shakes her head. "Too easy. There has to be some kind of catch."
Thomas glanced at her and to be honest he agreed with her. But he hoped that it was this easy since he wanted to escape. He slowly walked towards the door, and hesitantly turned the handle. Lizzie was surprised to see bodies scattered around, and the lights in the room were flickering as an alarm constantly went off. They walked in, looking at the dead bodies, and Lizzie gasped when she looked to the side at a glass window to see in the room there were two bodies on metal tables that were dead.
Minho pulls her away from the awful sight as they all continues walking forward. "What happened here?" Minho was the first to speak as he kicked away a gun that was by a dead body.
"I'm not for sure if I wanna know." Lizzie mumbled.
They walks into another room that was filled with technical stuff. Dead bodies scattered the room, the lights were still flickering, and even some of the computer screens were broken. Lizzie looked over at some computer screens Newt, and Frypan were by. Her eyes widened when she saw it showing the Glade and the one below it showed the outline of a brain.
"So they were watching us." Newt shakes his head and by the expression on his face it was obvious he was angry about it. Lizzie didn't blame him for being angry because she was angry too. "This whole time." Newt said.
Lizzie glances around the room along with the others, and jumped, startled when she heard a voice. Everyone looks over at a big screen that showed a women with red hair in a white colored outfit. "My name is Dr. Ava Paige." Ava introduces herself in the video. "I'm director of operations World Catastrophe Kilzone Department. If you're watching this, that means you've successfully completed the maze trials."
Everyone moves towards to stand in front of the screen as they watch the video with confusion. "I wish I could be there to congratulate you." Ava said. "But circumstances seemed to prevent it. I'm sure by now you all must be confused. Angry. Frighten. I can only assure you that everything that happened to you, that everything we've done to you was all for a reason."
"You won't remember, but the sun has scorched our world."
A video of the sun with everything being red around it appeared on the screen as Ava continued explaining what happened. The video then changed to places being burnt, ruined cities, and even dead bodies buried in debris. She said that something worse then happened and that they called it the flare. "A deadly virus that attacks the brain." Ava explains. "It is violent, unpredictable. Incurable. Or so we thought. In time a new generation emerged that could survive the virus. Suddenly there was a reason to hope for a cure."
She then went on to explain about how finding it wouldn't be easy, how the young would be tested so their brain activity could be studied, all to find out what makes them different. "You may not realize it, but you're very important." Ava continues. "Unfortunately your trials have only just begun. You'll soon discover that not everyone agrees with our methods."
Lizzie notices that behind Ava scientist started running out of the place just as people in masks with guns barged into the room. A lot of questions were running around in her mind as she watches the video. "Progress slow. People are scared. There's no hope for us. For me. The outside world waits."
Lizzie's eye widen in disbelief when Ava raised a gun to her head. "Remember, WICKED is good." Lizzie laid her head on Minho's shoulder, closing her eyes since she didn't want to see what happened next.
Minho rubbed his thumb over the front of her hand to try and calm her down. Lizzie looked over after she heard a gun shot, noticing a dead body that looked similar to Ava and they all walked towards the body, staring with shock. They looked over when a door opened revealing a dark hallway that had light peeping out from a door at the end of the hallway.
"Is it over?" Chuck asked.
"She said we were important." Newt mumbles, processing what just happened. He looked at Thomas, wondering if he knew what to do. "What are we supposed to do now?"
"I don't know." Thomas admits. "But let's get out of here."
Everyone went to take a step forward, but stopped when a voice said, "No."
They all turn around, surprised to see Gally standing near the entrance of the room, but he had a gun in his hand. Minho made sure that Lizzie was behind him since he wanted to keep her safe.
"Gally?" Thomas questioned and started to walk towards him, but Teresa stopped him.
"He's been stung." Teresa noticed.
Lizzie bit her lower lip nervously upon hearing that information. Gally starts crying as he shakes his head. Lizzie then notices the black veins on his neck. "We can't leave." He said, his hand shaking.
"We did. We're out." Thomas tells him, with his arms out in front of him. "We're free."
"Free? You think we're free out there?" Gally scoffs. He shakes his head. "No. There's no escape from this place."
Lizzie's eyes widen, instinctively moving towards Minho when he raised the gun at everyone. She was ready to jump in front of Minho to save him from getting shot. "Gally, listen to me." Thomas said, trying to get his attention. "You're not thinking straight. You're not. But we can help you."
Lizzie looks down when she noticed out of the corner of her eye that Minho was holding a long sharp stick with his other hand and her eyes widened in realization. "Just put down the gun." Thomas spoke.
Gally shakily breaths, keeping the gun aimed at everyone. "I belong to the maze. We all do."
Everything happened so fast. Chuck jumped in front of Thomas as Minho threw the stick at Gally, hitting him right in the chest. Gally then started to have trouble breathing and he fell to the ground.
Lizzie looks over at Chuck, tears starting to form in her eyes when she noticed the gun shot. "No.." She mumbled in disbelief. She figured that Gally pulled the trigger just as he fell down.
"Thomas..." Chuck shakily said and Thomas looked at him with wide eyes when he noticed the blood seeping through Chuck's shirt.
Chuck almost fell, but Thomas caught him before he could. Tears formed in Thomas' eyes as sat on the ground after he laid Chuck down, and tried to stop the bleeding. "Thomas...it's okay." Chuck reassured him as he shakily held the wood figure he carved out that was for his parents, wanting Thomas to take it.
Thomas shakes his head. "No, Chuck. You're gonna give it to them yourself, remember?"
"Take it." Chuck managed to say. Thomas finally gave in and took the wood figure from him.
"Thank you." Chuck told him.
A tear fell down Lizzie's face when Chuck went still. Thomas then tried shaking Chuck awake, not wanting to believe he was dead. He then started crying. Each of the Gladers that were left were teary as they watched this, sad that they just lost someone like Chuck.
Lizzie sniffled, wiping away some tears when she heard a door opening, and then she saw a bright light which caused her to cover her eyes slightly until she got used to the bright light. Her eyes widened when she saw people in masks and with guns run towards them, ushering them to go with them. They were all hesitant with following them, but they had to follow them since they were pushed out out of the room. Two of the masked men had to pick up Thomas and carry him out. Even though Minho didn't want to, he eventually let go of Lizzie's hand as they ran outside to be greeted by sand and dust. And the group soon make it to a helicopter they were guided to.
The masked guy that was in there with them pulls down his mask, looking at them all with concern. "You guys alright?" He asked them.
No one replies so he sends them all a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. You're safe now."
The Gladers looks out the window as the helicopter flew over the maze and the Glade. It was so weird seeing the whole thing from the sky. "Relax, kids. Everything's gonna change." The man said which confused Lizzie, but she was just glad she was out.
She sighed and she rested her head on Minho's shoulder, closing her eyes to sleep. A small smile tugged on Minho's lips as he looked over at Lizzie. He laid his head against the wall behind him, closing his eyes. They may have lost a lot of Gladers, but the important thing was that they made it out alive.
A/N And that's the end of the first movie! The next chapter will be of the second movie!
