CHAPTER FIVE
The next day Lizzie was finishing up bandaging one of the Slicers whenever she heard yelling. Once she finished wrapping up the Slicer, the two walked out of the hut to see what was going on.Lizzie's eyes widened when she saw Thomas running back from the woods with Ben following him. Ben was yelling things like, 'it's your fault', and constantly kept trying to tackle Thomas to the ground. The closer she got, she noticed how pale he was which wasn't a good sign.
"What's going on?" Clint asked, walking out of the hut with Jeff.
Lizzie shakes her head and frowns. "I don't know. But it doesn't look good."
Lizzie ran over along with the rest of the Gladers when Ben tackled Thomas to the ground. Thomas did his best to try and get Ben off of him as Ben yells, "I'll kill you!"
Newt hits Ben with a plank of wood which gets Ben off of Thomas. "Hold him down!" He exclaimed. He knelt on the ground, holding Ben down. Frypan and Gally did their best to help keep ahold of Ben since Newt was having trouble on his own.
"Thomas, what happened?" Lizzie asked as Thomas stood up.
"He just attacked me." He replied and everyone looked at him with shock since Ben never attacked someone.
Thomas rests his hands on his knees while trying to catch his breath. "You okay?" Chuck looked at him with concern, and the boy beside him nodded.
Ben somewhat calmed down while Alby stepped forward. Fear grew in Ben's eyes after he had a look of realization on his face. He started mumbling 'no' over and over until he shouted it. Lizzie noticed the black veins extending on the side of his face, and she feared for the worst.
"Lift up his shirt." Alby demanded.
When Newt lifted Ben's shirt to reveal a nasty bite, everyone gasped and backed away, including Lizzie. "He's been stung," Gally notices, glancing at Newt and then Alby with confusion. "In the middle of the day?"
Alby was quiet for a moment before he stands and demands, "Put him in the pit."
Ben continued to struggle and yell as some of the boys carried him over to the pit. Then, everyone walked back to what they were doing before, but Lizzie stayed back with Thomas.
She puts a hand on his shoulder. "You okay?" She asked, her voice laced with concern.
"I'm a little shaken up, but yeah. I'm okay." He reassured her with a slight smile on his face.
She smiles, relieved he was okay. "Okay, good. If you find out you got hurt, just let me or one of the other Med-Jacks know."

Before she knew it, it was time for banishing Ben to the maze. Lizzie stayed in the back with Chuck and glanced over her shoulder, seeing that Thomas was walking up to them. The Gladers in front were holding a long pole in front as Minho pushed a tied-up Ben towards the door that was now open. Ben had gotten worse. He had more black veins running up his arms and even over his face.
Despite Ben's pleas and cries for help, Minho kept a straight face as he continued pushing Ben to the door. He shoved Ben to his knees and got a knife out of his pocket. He cut the rope tied around Ben's wrists while a circle formed around them so Ben couldn't escape. Lizzie bit her lower lip as she watched Minho throw a backpack out in the maze for Ben. Alby was the first to put his pole down, the rest following as Minho moved off to the side.
Ben scrambles to get up when Alby commands, "Move in."
They started moving closer to Ben, making him go into the maze. Lizzie hated this. She knows that they don't have a cure for Ben, so it made sense why they were banishing Ben to the maze. It was also for their safety. Plus, they didn't have any medication that could save the person stung, so the only solution they came up with was to put them in the maze and hope they somehow survived.
Lizzie couldn't help but wince at the sound of Ben's yell behind the now-closed door. A moment of silence passed after the door was closed.
Alby was the one to break the silence. "He belongs to the maze now."
Each of the Gladers put the polls they had up against the wall and walked off. Gally and two of the other Gladers went to the part of the wall where they had their names carved in, and he crossed Ben's name out.
Lizzie was laid in her hammock, which was nearby Thomas' and Chuck's. "Do you think he'll make it?" She heard Thomas ask.
"No." Chuck replied.
"No one makes it a night in the maze." Lizzie solemnly said.
"Yeah," Chuck agrees, speaking in a sad tone. "You just got to forget about him."
Lizzie sighed quietly, closing her eyes to try and get some sleep. She wasn't that close with Ben, but it still hurt to lose someone in the Glade. And Ben played an important part in the Glade. Now there were just a few Runners left, and she hoped there wouldn't be a problem with that.

The following day she got up early along with Newt to see Minho and Alby off. Alby was going in the maze with Minho since they didn't have Ben anymore.
Lizzie hugs Minho. "Be careful, okay?"
"You trying to get sappy on me, Shank?" Minho teased, pulling away from the hug.
Lizzie rolls her eyes and punches his arm. "No. I just don't want to lose anymore Runners."
"Wow. I'm hurt." Minho sarcastically said, putting a hand over his heart. He chuckles at Lizzie's unamused face. He playfully elbows her. "Don't worry. We'll make it back, Z. Always do." Lizzie nodded, and smiled slightly. Then she went to wish Alby good luck and give him a hug. Along with Newt, Lizzie watched as they ran off into the maze.
She turns to Newt with a small smile on her lips. "I don't know about you, but I'm going back to sleep for a few hours."
"You're so lazy." Newt chuckled while she started walking back to her hammock to go back to sleep.
She turns around to face him, walking backwards as she outstretches her arms dramatically. "Not lazy. Just not a morning person."
A few hours later, she woke up and started working just like any other day, but she was more worried about Minho and Alby today. She was always concerned when Minho went into the maze, but maybe she was more concerned because Alby was with him.
Lizzie was in the homestead with most of the Gladers when she heard rumbling, which confused her.
"Is that rain, or am I going crazy?" Jeff asked as he stood beside her.
"That's either rain, or I'm going crazy with you." Lizzie replied, watching it rain with a smile on her lips. It rarely rained in the Glade, so it made her happy to see the rain.
"They should be back by now." Thomas spoke, referring to Minho and Alby.
"They're gonna make it." Newt assured him.
Thomas stands beside him and looks at him worriedly. "What happens if they don't?"
Lizzie looked over at hearing that, and she shared a look with Newt. She bit her lower lip as she looked back at the door. Neither of them wanted to say that there could be a possibility Alby and Minho might not make it because then that would make that possibility real. The two teens didn't want to think that way. Alby and Minho knew the maze-like the back of their hand, but there were many obstacles there. Lizzie and Newt just wanted to believe that they were always going to make it. But at the moment, Lizzie was beginning to doubt that.
"They're gonna make it." Newt repeated.
Thomas was quiet as he nodded and then walked off. "You really think they're gonna make it?" Lizzie nervously asked.
Newt nods, sending her a reassuring smile. "Lee, it's Minho and Alby. Of course, they'll make it."
Soon the rain stopped, and everyone gathered around the door that was now open, anxiously waiting for Minho's and Alby's arrival. Lizzie stood in front, biting her lower lip as she stared at the maze.
Her heartbeat increased when she heard the sound of the door beginning to close. Now she was beginning to worry. "Come on, guys, can't we send someone after them?" Thomas inquired, glancing at Newt since at the moment he was in charge.
"It's against the rules," Gally replies. "They either make it back, or they don't."
"We can't risk losing anyone else." Newt chimed in.
"No..." Lizzie mumbled under her breath with a look of fear forming on her face as the door continued to close. She couldn't believe she was about to lose the person she was falling in love with and the person who was like an older brother figure to her.
"There!" Thomas suddenly exclaimed as he pointed. Lizzie looked forward, hope filling her when she noticed Minho walking around the corner, but it looked like he was carrying Alby, which wasn't good.
"Something's wrong..." Newt realized.
"Come on, Minho, you can do it!" Chuck cheered him on, and soon some of the other Gladers started cheering Minho on. Lizzie would've joined, but she was too scared.
"They're not gonna make it." Newt frowned, and Thomas looked at him. He looked over at Lizzie, noticing how scared she was at the moment. He looked away from her and looked back at Minho and Alby. He doesn't remember if he did something more stupid than what he was about to do. But if he could do something to help Minho and Alby, then there was no point in standing around, and he knew how important they were to everyone.
"Thomas, no!" Lizzie yelled. Newt had even reached forward to pull Thomas back, but Thomas was too fast, and he ran into the maze before Newt could get him.
