CHAPTER EIGHT
They took two trucks to fit the group in and headed to the base. When they arrived, Lizzie got out of the truck along with the others, staring at the base. There were multiple tents set up around the base, and there were even a few campfires. As they followed Harriet and Sonya Lizzie pulled her hair into a pony tail.
"They've been planning this for over a year now." Harriet explained. "This is all for us."
"You guys are lucky you found us when you did." Sonya said. "We're moving out at first light."
She looked over at one of the men near them. "Where's Vince?" She asked them and he pointed in the direction where he thought Vince might be as he continued walking.
"Who's Vince?" Thomas questioned.
"He's the one who decides if you get to stay." Harriet answered, leading them to where Vince was.
"I thought the Right Arm was supposed to be an army." Minho spoke up.
"Yeah, we were."
The group stops walking and looks over seeing a long blonde haired man walk up to them. He gestures to the place. "This is all that's left of us. Lot of good people died getting us this far."
Lizzie then realized this guy must be Vince. Vince looks over at Harriet with his hands on his hips. "Who are they?"
"They're immunes." Harriet replied. "Caught them coming up from the mountain."
Lizzie looks behind her at Brenda, checking to see if she was alright. She noticed earlier that Brenda was acting strange and was starting to look pale. Now she saw that it looked like Brenda was sort of swaying, as if she was having trouble standing. Lizzie frowned, realizing that Brenda was worse than before and she had no idea why.
"Did you check them?" Vince asked Harriet and Sonya.
Harriet points at Aris. "I know this guy, Aris. I trust him."
Sonya nods. "Yeah, me too. And I trust Newt, also. He's my brother." She told Vince, pointing at Newt.
"Well, I don't." Vince said, staring at the group with a stern look. He then gestured to some men that were standing nearby. "Check 'em."
Lizzie's worry for Brenda grew when she started breathing heavily. "Hey, boss..." One of the men spoke up, noticing how Brenda was acting.
"Brenda!" She gasped, her eyes growing wide when Brenda fell forward. Jorge quickly knelt on the ground besides her to see what was wrong. He got her laying on is lap, trying to get her to talk to him.
Vince knelt down besides him. "What's going on with her?" Jorge shook his head, not knowing what's going on. Vince looked at Brenda's leg, noticing something weird. He pulled the pant leg up to reveal a nasty Crank bite. Standing up, he immediately backed away as he got his gun out.
"Crank! We got a Crank!"
Thomas rushed in front of Jorge and Brenda, trying to stop Vince from doing anything else while two men held Jorge back.
"Listen, this just happened, okay? She's not dangerous yet." Thomas informed him.
Vince pointed at him. "You shouldn't have brought her here! We let Cranks in here now, the safe haven doesn't last us a week!"
Thomas nodded. "I understand. Just...just listen. Please, okay? I told her that you could help. There's got to be something that you can do."
"Yeah, there is." Vince said, cocking the gun as he aimed it at Brenda. "I can put her out of her misery."
Jorge lets out shouts of protest, trying to get out of the grip the two men had on him. "Vince, that's enough!" A women's voice yelled.
Lizzie looked behind Vince, seeing a dark headed women walking towards them. She gestured to the men that were keeping Jorge captured. "Let him go. Let him go!"
The men let him go and Jorge immediately went over to Brenda. "She's infected, Doc. There's nothing we can do for her." Vince said to the women.
The women shook her head. "No, but he can." She stared at Thomas with a smile while Thomas looked at her with confusion. "Hello, Thomas."
"What? You know me?" Thomas looks at the women, wanting an answer.
"Interesting." The women muttered and then nodded. "It makes sense that they put you in the maze."
Thomas' confusion only grew while the women went over to Brenda. "Though I must admit, I was worried they'd kill you after what you did." The women admitted to Thomas as she checked Brenda's pulse.
"W-what I did?" Thomas stuttered, furrowing his eyebrows.
The women then explained the first time they talked how he said he couldn't continue watching his friends die and she explained the last time they spoke how he gave her the coordinates of every WICKED compound, trial and lab.
"He was our source." Vince realized.
The women nodded. "We couldn't have pulled this all off without him." She looked back at Brenda. "Take her to the tent." She told some of the men near by as she stood up. She gestured for Thomas to follow her, saying that she needed to get some blood from him.
The group separated for a bit so they could get some new clothes, and said they would meet each other on top of the big rocks near the camp when they were finished. Lizzie had to admit it felt nice wearing clean clothes. She put on a purple jacket over her navy colored t-shirt as she walked up to where she noticed Newt, Frypan, and Minho were sitting at.
"Hey, guys." Lizzie greets, smiling as she sat between Minho and Newt. Frypan sent a smile her way. "Hey, Liz."
"This place isn't that bad." Minho commented, staring at the camp with a small smile on his face. Newt nodded in agreement. "A lot better that WICKED."
"I think anything is better than WICKED." Lizzie mumbled glancing over to her right with curiosity when she heard footsteps heading towards them. When she saw it was Thomas, her thoughts went to wondering how Brenda was doing.
"Is Brenda okay?" She asked Thomas, getting his attention.
He nods while sitting down on a nearby rock. "Yeah, she's still a little weak, but she's getting better." He replied and she smiled, glad to know that about their friend.
"I wish Alby could've seen all of this." Newt spoke up.
"And Winston." Frypan added.
It was quiet for a moment before Thomas joined in by saying, "And Chuck."
Everyone nodded in agreement, solemn expressions on their faces, sad for the friends they lost along the way. Lizzie's heartbeat skipped a beat when she felt a hand on her own that was laid flat against the rock. She rested her head on Minho's shoulder while he intertwined their hands together.
"He'd be proud of you, you know, Tommy." Newt said to Thomas. Thomas nodded. He knew that, but that didn't make him miss Chuck any less. "Yeah."
"Hey, Aris!" Frypan exclaimed, looking down to where he was hanging out with Harriet and Sonya.
Aris looked up at them with a smile and waved. "Hey, guys!"
Lizzie smiled, waving back at Aris with her other hand that wasn't intertwined with Minho's. Frypan looked back at them wit a grin. "I kinda like that kid."
Minho chuckled as he shook his head. "Yeah, I still don't trust him, though."
"He helped us escape WICKED and you still don't trust him?" Lizzie lifted her head off of his shoulder, looking at him with a raised brow and a teasing smile.
Rolling his eyes, he let out a small laugh. "Shut up, Shebean."
"Where's Teresa?" Thomas questioned, noticing that she wasn't with them.
Newt pointed over his shoulder to where Teresa was standing on a nearby cliff looking at the view. "She's up there."
"I'm gonna go talk to her." Thomas said, standing up from his spot and made his way over to her.
The four of them continued to sit in comfortable silence, enjoying the slight breeze and the beautiful view of the mountains because before they knew it things weren't going to be calm like this for a long time.
