CHAPTER EIGHT
Lizzie ran towards the building that the Runners mapped out the maze, surprised to find the door was open. Minho and Thomas turned around to her.
"Hey, what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here." Minho reminded her.
"Yeah, I know, Shank." Lizzie rolls her eyes, putting her hands on her hips. "But it's about the girl."
"What? Is she awake?" Thomas asked her.
Lizzie nods. "Yeah." She rubs the side of her head with a pained look on her face. "Found out she also has a good aim." The boys shared a confused look, and Lizzie gestured for them to follow her. So, they followed Lizzie to the Watch Tower.
"Hey, Chuck, what's going on?" Thomas asked as they stood near Chuck, who stood off to the side laughing at the Gladers.
"Girls are awesome." Chuck laughed. He pointed at the girl throwing rocks at the Gladers below, yelling at them to leave her alone.
They went over to the group, and Minho picked up a nearby plank of wood. He put it over his and Lizzie's head as the girl continued to throw things at them so they wouldn't get hit.
Newt had his hand over his head to cover himself not to get hit, and Winston moved over to him, using the plank of wood he was using to protect himself and used it to cover Newt as well. "I don't think she likes us that much." Newt noticed.
"Thanks for stating the obvious, Newtie." Lizzie rolled her eyes.
"What do you want from me?" The girl throwing the rocks questioned.
"Hey, look, we just wanna talk," Thomas speaks up, but that wasn't much of help. If anything, it just made her more violent. "Lizzie, why don't Lizzie you go up to talk to her? She might feel more comfortable talking with another girl." Thomas suggested, glancing at the brunette-haired girl beside Minho.
Lizzie shakes her head with a grimaced expression. "I tried that, and now my head hurts."
When the girl first saw Lizzie with the boys, she stopped throwing rocks for a bit, and Lizzie even made it over to the latter. That was until the girl threw a rock at her that hit the top of Lizzie's head, and so Lizzie went back to hiding with Minho. It was clear the girl wanted her space.
After the girl threw some more things, Thomas finally told her who he was. "It's Thomas!"
Lizzie was surprised that the girl stopped throwing things when he said that. The girl then peeks through the railing, looking down at Thomas. "Okay, I'm gonna come up, okay?" Thomas asked.
The girl didn't say anything as she moved away from the railing. Everyone lowered whatever they had to cover them from getting hit when it seemed like the girl was done with throwing things. "Okay," Thomas said, glancing at everyone. "Just me."
"I'm coming up." Thomas announced to the girl as he started climbing up the Watch Tower.
"Well, this could either go really good or terribly wrong." Lizzie sighed as she rubbed the spot on her head where she got hit.
"That's very true." Minho chuckles. His eyebrows furrowed together upon seeing that it seemed like she was hurt. He looks at her with concern. "You okay?"
Lizzie nods, sending him a reassuring smile. "Yeah, I'll be fine."
A few minutes passed, and most of the Gladers went back to their jobs, bored of waiting.
Gally suddenly speaks up, "What's going on up there?" Lizzie rolled her eyes, annoyed with him being impatient.
Thomas stands up, looking down at the ones who were still by the Watch Tower. "Is she coming down?" Newt asked him.
"Um," Thomas glances back at Teresa (Lizzie could hear he had asked her if she remembered her name, and she said it's Teresa), and he looks back down at the others. "Listen, just give us a second, okay?"
"Alright," Newt replies, but Gally didn't seem so happy about it. "Come on." The blonde-haired boy encouraged, gesturing for everyone to get back to work.

"We don't even know what this stuff is." Newt held the two syringes in his hand that Teresa had with her.
Lizzie was in the Med-Jack hut with Clint, Jeff, Thomas, Teresa, and Newt in the room that Alby was being kept in. Thomas had told them that they thought whatever was in the syringe might be able to help Alby.
"We don't know who sent it. Or why it came up here with you." Newt points at Teresa. "I mean, for all we know this thing could kill him."
"He's technically already dying." Lizzie pointed out.
"She's right." Thomas nods. He points at the syringes. "So, how could this make him any worse?"
Lizzie stared at Alby with sadness. Black veins covered some of his chest, and he was struggling to breathe. "Alright." Newt finally caves in and Lizzie looks over at him with surprise. "Do it." Newt handed Thomas the syringe.
Thomas took the syringe from Newt, moving over to Alby. Thomas went to stick the needle in Alby's chest when Alby suddenly looked at him and grabbed hold of his shirt with a yell. Lizzie immediately moved forward along with Jeff and Newt to try and get Thomas out of Alby's grip.
"Get the syringe!" Thomas told Teresa. Lizzie, Jeff, and Newt managed to get him out of Alby's grip while Teresa quickly got the syringe from Thomas and stuck it in Alby's chest. Alby calmed down almost immediately and then went unconscious.
"Well, that worked." Jeff slowly said as everyone caught their breath.
"Okay, from now on, someone stays here to watch him around the clock." Newt declared.
"Hey."
They look over to see Gally at the door. He nods towards Thomas. "It's sundown, Greenie. Time to go."
Thomas nodded and walked out of the room along with Gally. Lizzie looked back at Alby, hoping that whatever was in the syringe would help him get better.

Lizzie anxiously waited outside the door and the other Gladers for Minho's and Thomas' arrival the next day. Finally, a few minutes later, Minho and Thomas appeared around the corner.
"What's going on?" Lizzie asked, referring to the loud noise they had heard from the maze earlier. She figured that the maze was changing, which was weird since it usually didn't change until night.
"We found something," Thomas said. "A new passageway. We think it could be a way out."
Lizzie's eyes widened, and hope filled her at hearing that. The Gladers haven't found a way out in three years. Even though she calls this place home, she is ready to see what is outside the maze.
"Really?" Newt asked.
Minho nods. "It's true. We opened a door to something I've never seen before. We think it must be where the Grievers go during the day."
"Wait, woah, woah." Chuck jogs over to them, so he is walking beside them. "You're saying you found the Griever's home, and you want us to go in?"
"Yeah," Lizzie runs her hand through her hair, glancing at Thomas with an annoyed expression. "That sounds like a stupid idea to me."
Thomas shakes his head. "There way in could be our way out."
"Yeah, or there could be a dozen Grievers on the other side." Gally scoffs. "The truth is Thomas doesn't know what he has done as usual."
"Well, at least I'm doing something!" Thomas exclaims, turning around to look at Gally. "I mean, what have you've done, huh, besides hide behind these walls this whole time."
Gally glares at him. "I'm gonna tell you something, Greenie. You've been here for three days, alright? I've been here for three years."
"You've been here for three years, and you're still here, Gally!" Thomas yells. "So what does that tell you? Maybe you should start doing things a little differently."
"Maybe you should be in charge." Gally sarcastically commented.
"Hey!" Teresa suddenly exclaims, stopping them from fighting. Everyone looks at her. "It's Alby. He's awake."
Lizzie walks back into the Med-Jack hut with Teresa, Minho, Newt, Thomas, Frypan, and Gally. "Has he said anything?" Minho asked.
Teresa shakes her head. "No."
Lizzie stands next to Minho as Newt hesitantly walks up to Alby, who is sitting on the bed with his arms crossed. "Alby." Newt tries getting Alby's attention. He sits down next to him, looking at Alby with concern. "Alby, you alright?'
Alby just remained quiet as he stared forward, and Lizzie honestly felt bad for him. She didn't know what else they could do to help him.
Thomas kneels in front of him. "Hey, Alby." He speaks in a soft tone. "Alby, we might've just found a way out of the maze. You hear me? We could be getting out of here."
"I can't." He said in a shaky voice. Lizzie notices that tears are forming in his eyes which makes her frown. "I can't leave. They won't let us."
Lizzie raises her eyebrow, tilting her head to the side in confusion. She shared a confused look with Minho before looking back at Alby. "I remember." Alby said.
"What are you talking about?" Thomas asks him, furrowing his eyebrows. "What do you remember?"
Alby was quiet as he turned to look at Thomas. "You." Everyone, including Lizzie, looks at Thomas with wide eyes. "You were their favorite, Thomas." Alby continued.
Lizzie looked around whenever she heard yelling outside of the hut. "Why did you do this?" Alby questions Thomas with a tear falling down his face. "Why did you come here?"
Thomas stared at him in shock, guilt filling him even though he didn't know what he had done. He slowly stood while Alby put his face in his hands. Lizzie was the first to leave the hut with everyone else following her to see what was happening outside.
She furrowed her eyebrows, her heartbeat increasing as she noticed everyone rushing around. Some were even carrying torches because it was getting dark.
"Winston, hey!" Lizzie gets Winston's attention, seeing him running near them. He stops near her, raising his eyebrows at her in question. "What's going on?"
"The door," Winston replies to her, gesturing to the open door. "They're not closing."
Lizzie's watched him run off with wide eyes, not liking the sound of that. If the door didn't close, that meant that the Grievers could come to the Glade. She rushed over to the door that wasn't closing along with everyone else. Lizzie stood near Minho, letting out a surprised yelp at the sudden loud noise. She grimaced, covering her ears at hearing the loud noise and some others did the same thing as well.
She turned around whenever she heard the familiar sound of a door opening. Her eyes grew wide when she saw the one across from them open. The doors had never opened before. She cringed when she heard the same loud noise and looked over to see the door at the other end was opening.
"This isn't good." She mumbled, her voice shaky and her eyes were filled with worry.
She jumped whenever she felt someone intertwine their fingers with her and looked down at their intertwined hands. Then, she looked to her right beside her to see Minho was looking at her with a small smile. She calmed down slightly because he was by her side, but she didn't calm down all the way since she was still worried and scared about everything that was happening. He had intertwined his hand with hers, trying to comfort her since he noticed how scared she was, and by the expression on her face, he assumed it was working.
Thomas then told Chuck to go to the Council Hall and start barricading it while Newt told Winston to go with him. Gally told some of the other Gladers to go into the forest and hide.
"Minho, I want you to grab every weapon you can find." Thomas told Minho. Minho nodded and went to move, but Lizzie squeezed his hand. He looked back at her and sent her a reassuring smile.
"I'll be fine, okay?" He squeezed her hand, and she nodded. He then took off running while Frypan and some of the other Gladers followed him.
"Lizzie, Teresa, we'll go get Alby." Thomas told them, and the girls nodded in response. Lizzie looked over with wide eyes when she noticed some of the Gladers running out of the forest, yelling. Then, she heard the awful screech of a Griever and looked over at the open door noticing a few at the other end.
"Alright, everybody hide!" Thomas yelled and everyone took off running.
Lizzie takes off running to where they kept the corn, and she was thankful that it was tall enough to keep her and the others who hid with her stay hidden. "Stay down!" Thomas shouted.
Lizzie knelt down, trying her best to stay hidden, and was wishing that her heart would stop beating so rapidly. She hated how screams filled the Glade along with screeches from the Grievers. She looked over to her left when she heard a yell from a boy hiding near them. Her eyes grew wide and she covered her mouth to silence her gasp when he was yanked back by a Griever.
Lizzie dared to look up and froze when she saw the claw of a Griever above where Zart was hiding. "Zart!" She exclaimed along with some of the others whenever the Griever grabbed him and yanked away.
After that happened, she ran out with the others, realizing this wasn't a good hiding place. Lizzie was starting to realize that there wasn't any good place to hide. So she ran with them to the Homestead hut, seeing that Jeff and Clint were helping Alby stand up.
"What's going on?" Alby asked.
"Nothing good." Lizzie shook her head.
"The Grievers?" Jeff's eyes widened and Lizzie nodded in response, causing fear to fill Jeff's eyes.
"Stay here." Thomas told them. The group noticed a Griever run by, tackling one of the boys that were running.
"Alright, so what do we do?" Jeff questioned.
Lizzie looked back with wide eyes as one of the Gladers was being dragged away, and she started backing up along with the others. "Run! Go, go, go!" Thomas exclaimed, ushering everyone out.
Lizzie ran out of the Homestead, hoping that Minho was still alive because she hadn't seen him since he got weapons, which was starting to worry her. They all sstopped running when a Griever knocked over the woodpile they used for bonfire nights that happened to be in front of them.
"Teresa!" She exclaimed, worry laced in her voice as she watched Teresa pick up a jar that was lit and throws it at the Griever. She didn't know what Teresa had planned and even though she wasn't that close with her she didn't want Teresa to die. The jar that was lit hit the Griever, causing it to get on fire and stopped it from chasing after them for a while.
They took off running to the Council Hall. The Griever behind them eventually got the fire off and started chasing them. Lizzie didn't dare to look behind her when she heard one of the Gladers running with them yell. She just kept looking forward and running to the Council Hall. Alby tripped along the way, so Lizzie had rushed over to help him up along with Jeff and Clint.
"Get behind me!" Thomas declared, pushing everyone behind as the Griever started moving towards them.
They started backing away from the Griever as it got closer to them. Lizzie's eyes widened when a pole was suddenly thrown at the Griever. She let out a breath of relief she didn't realize she was holding as she saw Minho, Newt, Frypan, and a few other Gladers rushing over to them with weapons. They threw some more at the Griever to distract it, and everyone managed to get inside the Council Hall.
