More about the both of them :

Both of them were bullied , but luckily Okami was mostly spared , but for Kitsune ..She took hits for him.
Okami has been mentally harassed , while her sister has been through cyber (by her class and lot of people joined ) , physically , mentally , and even sexual harassment.
That led to depression , and a big suicidal period. Luckily she is slowly getting over it , little by little.

They never did have friends. Just the two of them.
So , Okami became very protective over her , since she went through hell to protect him , so it's his turn to protect her and help her as much as he can.

Fact : The Family Shiro have a very special bound with spirits , even though they're not exorcists or anything , they just , for centuries , helped spirit to finally have a peaceful « rest » ( they call that « Gift » ) . So they don't really like Exorcists , because they just ban spirits who really needs help.
