Chapter 15: Go Karts - Oops, I Mean Patrol Buggies!
Kenzie's P.O.V.
Our plan was working! Kayla, Sarah, and I had all worked together on a plan to get Donnie to like Abby. We already knew Abby liked Donnie, and I also didn't want to be there when Donnie was obsessing over April, but that was besides the point.
Then there was the problem that Abby would never, ever like a boy from school. Kayla was constantly trying to hook her up (which I don't really understand) and Abby absolutely hates it.
I was surprised the turtles agreed, but I figured Raph's motive was to stop Donnie's April obsession. I still don't know why Leo helped. And Mikey helped because he's Mikey. He was still reluctant, insisting that the two could figure it out by themselves, but eventually caved in.
This whole thing was Kayla's idea, and Sarah came up with the main plan. I helped convince the turtles (minus Donnie) to help.
Mikey seemed to enjoy our spying, weirdly enough. Raph seemed a bit uncomfortable, but he's Raph, so I didn't expect anything less. And Leo doesn't really like the idea at all, but he's playing along. I think he secretly hopes Mikey is right and we'll all just leave it along.
Raph's eyes flickered back at me, and though it was barely for even a second, I saw it. That was the fifth time he'd done it during our stakeout. I rolled my eyes.
"Would you stop that," I whispered to him. He looked at me blankly.
"Stop what?" he asked quietly, but there was a slight playful tone in his voice.
"Looking at me."
"I'm not. Intentionally."
That caught me off guard. I apparently made a weird face because he almost laughed but soon pressed his lips together to prevent it.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I questioned.
"Uh... Tell you later," he muttered, all laughter gone. I could tell he wasn't looking forward to 'later'.
Raph hadn't acted like Raph... odd.
I turned my attention back to Abby and Donnie.
"Yeah but why don't we just have a signal or something?" Abby asked seriously.
"Because we could still do it simultaneously!" Donnie explained, frustrated. Abby groaned.
"I don't think it's possible to not do things in unison."
"But it has to be!"
"We can finish this conversation after dinner. I'm hungry," Abby announced. She started towards the door.
"Act normal!" I hissed to everyone, who rushed to do their normal activities. I stayed rooted to the spot, realizing too late that I had no excuse.
Abby opened the door and I quickly pretended to be walking towards the lab.
"Oh, I was just coming to get you for dinner. I think, at least. I'm pretty sure the pizza should be here by now," I lied quickly.
"I was just coming to grab something to eat! Donnie will probably be out in a sec," Abby replied. I nodded.
As we walked together towards the kitchen, I tried to make conversation.
"So.. how's being a turtle going for you?" I asked casually.
"Good, I guess. I mean, I'm still getting used to this thing-" she gestured to the bulky shell on her back "-don't get me wrong, but I actually like being a.... mutant."
I nodded. "I guess I can relate, but when I transformed I couldn't remember anything, so that's a teeny weeny downside," I joked. Abby grinned.
"Nah, not teeny weeny, teeny shmeeny weeny," she laughed. I giggled.
"Oh, by the way, why was everyone spying on me and Donnie?" she asked, out of the blue as if it wasn't weird at all. I gaped at her.
"How did you know?!" I interrogated. She grinned evilly.
"I didn't. But now I do," she smirked at her own cleverness. I groaned, of course she outsmarted us! Seeing my frustration, Abby turned around and starting walking back towards the lab.
"Donnie! We have a breakthrough on the case!" she called while smiling innocently over her shoulder at me. I narrowed my eyes.
"Guys! We have a breakthrough in the case!" I hollered to my friends and the turtles, turning on my heel and walking their direction. I smirked at Abby, and she rolled her eyes.
"Copy cat," she muttered.
"I heard that!"
"I know!"
And with that, she flashed another fake-smile and closed the lab door.
"What was that about?" Sarah asked.
"Abby suspected we were spying... and tricked me into confirming it," I grumbled. Kayla burst out laughing.
"Well that shows you!" She laughed again before calming herself, not caring about the big smirk on her face.
"Oh great, now she's smirking. Everyone steals my thing," Raph said sarcastically. I snorted, seeing the smallest hint of a smile tugging on Raph's lips.
"Aw, Raphie's gonna smile!" I teased, causing him to push his lips into a frown. I laughed.
"I wasn't gonna smile," he defended. I rolled my eyes with a smile.
"It's not bad to be happy, Raph," Abby said. I jumped, realizing she was right next to me and not in the lab anymore.
"Since when are you standing there?" I exclaimed. She let out a short laugh.
"You honestly didn't hear me? I thought I was walking like normal," she shrugged. I tilted my head.
"Weird," I said. She nodded.
"Well guys, I have to admit you were very quiet, but especially you turtles must know by now that Donnie could feel you watching us," she said matter-of-factly. Always Abby to make us spying on her into a smart Alec fact, but I knew she was joking.
Just then Donnie came out if the lab with a glint in his eye.
"Hey Leo, do you think we can go somewhere? I wanna show everyone something. It's in the sewers, a little ways from here." Donnie asked. He grinned.
"Yeah, lemme go to tell Sensei," Leo replied.
We waited, and Leo came back. He nodded to confirm Splinter was informed.
"Alright, let's go!" Donnie said, jumping over a deactivated subway ticket thingy. His brothers followed in suit.
Abby easily hopped over, followed by Sarah, and Kayla attempted jumping but grazed the machine with her foot.
I climbed over quickly, and hurried to catch up with my friends.
"Don, where are we going?" Mikey bounced in excitement.
"It's a surprise," Donnie grinned slyly. Mikey mock-pouted.
Donnie lead us down the sewers. We trekked over the abandoned subway tracks for a good ten minutes before Donnie announced we had almost arrived.
I internally groaned, because he said almost. So much for "a little ways away."
After a few more minutes, Donnie paused abruptly, causing everyone else to walk into each other.
"Here we are!" he said, gesturing to a small door that read STAFF ONLY. DO NOT ENTER.
"It's just some old staff work room," Kayla said what everyone was thinking.
"That's what people, if any see it, are supposed to think," Donnie explained, pushing the door open.
Cue collective gasp.
Inside the door was a racetrack. 8 go karts - oh I'm sorry, patrol buggies, - lined the makeshift pitstop, rearing to go.
"This is AWESOME!" Mikey exclaimed, immediately sprinting to the orange buggy. I noticed every buggy was coordinated to match it's owners mask color.
I almost strolled over to the blue one, but spotted a more ocean-y color and left the deep blue one for Leo. Abby didn't seem surprised, so I figured Donnie told her. I suddenly wondered when they talked about all this, because we were watching them most of today.
"Man, you went all out, Donnie," Raph complimented. We all stared at him. His cheeks turned a little pink.
"What? I can be nice," he huffed. Then, reconsidering, added, "sometimes."
Everyone laughed.
Each buggy came with a matching helmet. I snapped mine on my head and climbed into my kart.
"Ok, so, here's how it works: we race around the track, and you have to do 3 laps in total. I set up a slo-mo camera at the finish line in case we have a super close race," Donnie explained. Everyone nodded in understanding.
"And now, without further ado, please welcome, Dojo Racing's faaaaaavorite announcer, April, Oooooooo' Neil!" Abby introduced with mild enthusiasm.
I suddenly wondered where April went when I turned into a bear, since she went with Donnie to help with Abby. Then I remembered Abby asking the same question to Donnie while we spied today, and Donnie said she went home.
After Abby announced April, the redhead came out in her classic #5 tee and black leggings. In her hand was a fake microphone. She wore a grin.
"Ladies and gentleturtles, it's my honor to introduce all of our contestants! In blue, we have Leonardo, leader of the turtles!!!!!" April announced.
"Lame-o-nardo," Raph hissed under his breath.
"Red is the color of this turtle's mask, please welcome Raphael the hothead!!!" A slight smirk grew on April's face at that remark. Raph scowled.
"The brains of the bunch is Donatello, the creator if this track, in purple!" April made a hand gesture to Donnie, who grinned. Everyone could hear Raph mutter "The nerd."
"And the final turtle, well, final male turtle, in orange, Michelangelo! The prankster!" April threw a water balloon at Mikey, causing an eruption of laughter from everyone. Mikey grinned.
"The idiot," Raph stated out loud, not even trying to hide the words. Mikey stuck out his bottom lip.
"And now for the girls! With a light blue, we have Kenzie, the vicious, turtle hungry bear!" April laughed lightly. I smiled and waved to the invisible crowd.
"Next is Sarah, in gray, the one with uncontrollable Raph-ness!" April joked, earning a playful glare from Sarah.
"Now let's all welcome Abby to the mutant family. In coral, it's Abby the newly mutated turtle!" April made an exaggerated hand gesture to Abby.
"And finally, in pink, the female Michelangelo, Kayla!!!" April threw a water balloon at Kayla, too, but Kayla simply caught it and chucked it back at April.
"And now I'll have to announce the rest of this race with wet clothes!!! Thanks, Kayla!!" April said with sarcastic enthusiasm. "Now, let's get started! Racers, LINE UP!"
We lined up at the start, revving our engines, seeing who could be most intimidating. I have to say, Abby was the loudest.
"The race will begin, in 5!"
I got my foot ready above the petal.
"4!"
I gripped the wheel tightly, making sure my turns would be sharp.
"3!"
I glanced around at my competition.
"2!"
Let's do this.
"1! Goooooo!"
I slammed on the gas pedal, getting a good start. I hugged the inside wall, making sure no one could pass me.
Suddenly, I was bumped from behind. I jumped in surprise, turning the wheel accidentally, opening the inside. Raph gave me a smirk as he zoomed past. I stuck out my tongue.
Maneuvering back to the wall, I made sure to check my mirrors. Sarah was coming up behind me. I sped up just as she was about to use Raph's strategy. I saw her scowl.
Eventually I caught up to Raph, and got a glimpse of his smug face. He didn't know I was right behind him! I slowly snuck around the outside, noticing that he wasn't going full speed. Once I was sure I could make it without him realizing (before it was too late), I sped up.
Going as fast as possible, I passed Raph. His eyes widened when he saw me cutting him off.
"Shell!" he exclaimed, scowling. I shot him a triumphant grin.
I kept the lead for the rest if the race. Leo almost passed me, but I cut him off by taking up the entire middle if the track. He couldn't fit past either side of my buggy.
I had almost finished when another buggy zoomed across the finish line in front of me.
"No!" I yelled.
I spotted coral and knew who had beat me. Abby.
I skidded to a stop, unstrapping and waiting for everyone else to finish. Donnie came third, only losing to me by a few seconds. Not long after him, Mikey and Raph flew across the finish at almost the exact same time, Mikey in front by just a little. They were followed by Sarah, who was followed by Leo, and finally Kayla lost.
"Who won? I couldn't hear April," Leo asked. I nodded to Abby.
"Ms. Turtle over there beat me at the last second!" I replied. Abby smirked at the 'Ms. Turtle' part.
"Yes, yes I did thanks for noticing," she snickered. I rolled my eyes playfully at her.
"So... what now?" Kayla asked, practically bouncing in her seat. I internally chuckled. She could never sit still, could she?
"I guess we should head back to the lair," Donnie shrugged. "We can come back here anytime we want, just make sure to lock the door when your in here and once you leave. It's just an extra precaution in case someone-"
He was cut off by the door flying off its hinges and landing on the track. A man in a completely black outfit with red, beady patches where the eyes should be walked monotonously into the room. Several others dressed in identical outfits followed.
I gasped in recognition, noticing my friends also realized who they were.
Raph growled, whipping out his sais and voicing my thoughts. "Foot bots."
