CHAPTER 32
|MEERA|
I sighed contently as Veer stroked my hair. My eyelids grew heavy and I forced myself to stay awake. "Go to sleep!" Veer whispered. I shook my head and snuggled close to his chest. "No, I want to stay awake and spend some more time with you!" I yawned as I said the sentence.
Veer's chest vibrated as he laughed. "Meera, I'm not going anywhere! I'll be here the whole time! Just sleep!" Veer muttered. I whined and shook my head. "No!" I whispered sleepily. I wrapped my arm around his torso and buried my face in his chest.
"This might sound silly! But I feel like if I sleep you'll disappear and everything that happened would be nothing but a dream! I don't want it to be a dream, I want it to be real! What if something happens to you?" I was literally rambling but I couldn't stop myself from saying all those things.
Veer held my face in between his hands and leaned closer. "You need to calm down Meera! I'm right here and not going anywhere! What are you talking about?" Veer assured me and placed a kiss on my forehead. I sighed and buried my face in his neck.
"I know! I've just been a bit paranoid since the incident. It didn't help that I couldn't connect with you for a while. I um have had some nightmares for the past few days." I mumbled the last part. Veer's arms around me stiffened. A few minutes later he tightened his arms around me and kissed my hair.
I breathed in his cologne and it calmed my senses. "What nightmares Meera? If you don't mind sharing it with me!" I took a deep breath and my eyes prickled with tears. I didn't want to talk about it and most of all I didn't want to say anything to Veer.
"No, I don't want to talk about it! I-I just want to forget about it!" I stuttered and pulled away from him. I discreetly wiped the tears from my eyes. I could feel Veer's burning gaze on my face. I looked into his eyes and gave him a small smile. While he just narrowed his eyes at me.
"Are you sure you don't want to tell me?" He pressed on the topic again. I think it's better if both of us forget about it for now. I shook my head and stared at the television. I heard Veer sigh loudly. I know he doesn't like it when I don't share stuff with him. But, it's totally unfair because he too hasn't shared a lot of things.
The biggest one was what had happened on his eighteenth birthday. I really wanted to know but I knew this wasn't the right time and if I do ask him now he'll blast off from here like his ass is on fire or something. On top of that, I'm super exhausted with all the fighting. I just want us to be a normal couple for a while.
It was silly because Veer and I had never been the conventional sort of couple. Nothing about us or our relationship was normal. But, we had been together since we were kids and I feel sort of lucky to have a boyfriend who had been my best friend for all my life well almost all my life.
I leaned forward and pecked his lips. I cupped his cheek and stared into his beautiful black eyes. "I'm fine, I promise! What could go wrong when you're here?" I brushed my lips against his. Veer's morphed into a huge grin. He leaned forward and closed the gap between our lips.
He sucked on my upper lip while I did the same with his lower one. He prodded his tongue against my lip and opened my mouth. Our tongues tangled and I could taste the chocolate that we had devoured a few minutes back. Tingles ran down my body, I moaned and raked my fingers through his hair. Veer's chest rumbled as he moaned against my lips. Sending shivers down my body.
I moved my lips vigorously against his lips. I wrapped my arms around his waist and sighed contently when I felt his warm hands around my body. We fought for dominance and as usual Veer was winning but it's not like I'm going to give up. He chuckled when I tried to dominate. I had to pull away because I was beginning to feel light-headed. My heart thudded against my chest.
I panted and leaned my head against his forehead. He ran the pad of his thumb over my swollen bottom lip and smiled. "That was a nice try!" I chuckled and pecked his lips one more time. "Mmhmm! I'll get you one of these days!" I mumbled against his lip. He chuckled and kissed my forehead. "I look forward to that!"
I rolled my eyes and buried my face in his chest. My hands were still on his waist. Veer caressed my back and kissed my forehead. Suddenly my hand touched a box sort of thing that was jutting from his hoodie. Veer frowned as I removed it. He was about to stop me but I pulled it out.
He cursed under his breath as I glared at him while holding a pack of cigarettes in my hand. "Seriously? You're still smoking? I thought you would have quit by now!" I threw the packet on his chest and turned my head to glare at the television. I crossed my arms across my chest. Smoking is not fun. No matter how sexy he looks when he does it.
Fuck! What is wrong with me! I could hear Veer sigh and saw him keep the pack of cigarettes on my nightstand through my peripheral vision. He bumped my shoulders with his. I scoffed and concentrated on the television. He poked me, tried to pull me closer but I dodged all his attempts.
"Meera! What do you want me to do? I'm trying to quit okay?" I rolled my eyes and turned my head to face him. "Really? That's you trying to quit?" I pointed at the pack of cigarettes. He ran his fingers through his hair and rolled his eyes. "Hey! If you must know I have cut down on it a lot!" I huffed and rolled my eyes.
"Veer, you shouldn't smoke at all! It could affect your stamina! That's not cool at all!" I shouted and threw my hands in the air, frustrated with him. "In case you have forgotten our jobs require us to be fit and have a lot of stamina!" Veer had a blank expression but nodded.
I rolled my eyes again and scoffed staring at the television. "Fine, I'll try harder!" I sighed and shook my head. I turned to look at him and entwined one of his hands with mine. "Since, when did you start smoking?" He turned his head and stared at the television blankly.
"A year and a half ago!" He shrugged his shoulders. I sighed and squeezed his hand. "Why did you start smoking?" I asked him tentatively. He cleared his throat. I was waiting for an answer. "I don't know! I just wanted to forget about some things that's all. It seemed like a good option, better than heavy drinking at least."
My heart dropped. I was about to ask him more when he began talking. "Don't ask me why! Please just don't! I will tell you with time but not today." I swallowed the questions that were on tip of my tongue. I nodded my head. "Fine." I traced his hand with my thumb.
There was an instant mood change after that. Veer was staring at the television blankly and I was trying to decipher what exactly he was thinking about. Even though I have known Veer for so many years I still feel like I don't know him at times. I know he's hiding something huge from me.
The tension was definitely increasing. Veer seemed lost and he was gripping my hand tightly. "Umm Veer?" I called his name and he hummed turning to face me. He still had a blank look on his face. Ugh, whatever I'm going to change that right now.
I gave him a huge grin and he raised his brows giving me a suspicious look. "I have a deal for you! Are you up for it? It's more of a challenge than a deal but it might prove to be fun! What do you say?" I chimed excitedly. Veer's lips morphed into a smile. He chuckled lightly and shook his head.
Finally! I didn't want to see him that way. This is how I want him to be always! This is how he should be! "The floor is yours Meera! Go for it! I'm always up for a challenge or a deal!" I squealed and faced him completely. I felt a sudden course of energy surge through me.
Smirking at him I climbed and straddled his lap. Veer's eyes widened, I smirked at him and locked my arms around his neck. My legs were on either side of his body. "Meera? Does your challenge slash deal include you doing irresistible things? Are you testing my self-control?" I laughed and kissed his cheek Veer groaned and threw his head back.
He wrapped his arms around my waist. "Hold on paticence!" I told him with a teasing smile. We were so close I could make out the light brown specks in his beautiful eyes. "Okay, but don't blame me if I act like a pervert! You're way too tempting right now!" He whispered huskily and lightly brushed my lips with his.
I closed my eyes and quickly it turned into a heated kiss. I moaned and tightened my arms around his neck. I pulled away when I finally remembered what deal I was about to make. "Quit distracting me! I'm trying to make a deal with you!" He chuckled and rolled his eyes but nodded.
"Anyway, the kiss was a perfect example of what you will be missing if you don't stop smoking! Am I clear?" Veer's brows furrowed as he gave me an "Are you crazy look?" I just smirked at him. "That's right mister! If you don't quit smoking I'll stop kissing you! On the other hand, the more you don't smoke the more I'll kiss you! Deal or no deal?"
Veer opened and closed his mouth several times trying to comprehend what I had just said. I really want him to quit smoking. We can take it slow but I'm going to have fun with this deal. It's a win for me either way. If Veer smokes I'll not kiss him and get to tease him about it! If he does not smoke then I get to make out. See win-win!
"What? That's crazy! You won't be able to resist me!" Veer stated smugly. I rolled my eyes and untangled myself from his embrace, and took a seat beside him. He pouted but I gave him a stern look. "I'm very serious Veer! Don't test my patience! I will do as I say! So, is it a deal or no deal? It has to be a deal because I'm not kissing you if you keep smoking!"
Veer growled but groaned and buried his face in the pillows. I giggled and ruffled his hair. "Okay deal! I'll keep a check on my smoking! I want to kiss you!" He mumbled into the pillow. I laughed and whooped. "Good to know!" I clapped my hands together and kissed the back of his head. I yawned and stretched my hands.
Veer moved away from the pillow and switched off the television. I checked my phone to see that it was already two in the morning. I rested my head against the pillows and Veer pulled the duvet up to my neck. He settled himself beside me and kissed my forehead. I wrapped my arms around his torso and buried my face in his chest.
"Good night Meera!" Veer whispered tightening his hands around my body. "Good night Veer!" I mumbled into his chest and fell into a deep slumber. The last thing I remember was Veer caressing my hair and humming a tune under his breath. This was definitely my personal heaven.
***
I groaned when the sunlight stabbed my eyes. I turned the other side and tapped my hands for Veer but the bed was empty. I frowned and found a note on the pillow. I giggled as I read the note.
"Good morning my Rapunzel! I had to leave early as I have some important work! I'll text you when I can. I can't call you sorry and please don't ask me what it is about! Confidential information! Anyway, relax and have a great day! I'll try sneaking in again tonight if I'm not caught up at work!
Chill and take care girlfriend ;)
I felt amazing when I wrote this!
P.s. I didn't take the pack of cigarettes it's right on your nightstand! Throw them away, can't take chances with the kisses!"
I glanced over to find the pack sitting on the nightstand. I smiled and couldn't stop myself from feeling a bit giddy. Who knew Veer was such a romantic? I quickly texted him informing him that I had received his note with a kissing emoji. He didn't reply immediately which was okay since he mentioned he might be busy.
I smiled and kept the note safely in one of my drawers. I grinned widely when I found Veer's hoodie hanging on a chair. I can always wear it when I miss him. I folded it neatly with one of his other jackets. I twirled around the room for a few minutes and made my way towards the washroom.
I took a quick shower. I put on a cute off-shoulder blue top and black jeans. I skipped down the stairs all the while humming a tune under my breath. It was a Saturday so I knew that everyone would be there in the living room.
My Mom was busy typing something on her laptop, Andy was watching a football match and cheering as if he were actually playing. Ugh, such a typical boy. My Dad was playing candy crush on his phone. I internally facepalmed when he cursed because he was unable to complete the level.
"Arjun! Are you even listening? I need one of you to come with me to the bakery today!" My Mom screeched while my Dad gave her a small smile. "Uhh, yeah sweetheart! Of course, I'm listening!" I laughed as my Dad stuttered. I decided to save him from the misery.
I walked towards the couch and plopped down in between them. "Good morning my favorite people!" My Dad kissed my cheek and whispered, "You're the best daughter!" I giggled and nodded. My Mom glared at him but kissed my head. I hugged her and peeped into the laptop.
They were some free orders that were being shipped to some of the orphanages. "I can come! I'll help you with it! I haven't done this in a while and I also want to spend some time with you!" I gave her a grin and laughed when she squealed pulling me in for a hug. "You're definitely my favorite kid!" I smiled mischievously at Andy who just scoffed and went back to watching his match.
"Spoilt brat!" He muttered and pouted. "Okay then I'll make you some breakfast and then we'll leave okay?" I nodded and walked towards Andy taking a seat beside him. I pinched his cheek and irritated him until he bellowed at me to stop. Before he could storm away I hugged him thanking him again for being there for me.
He huffed but let me hug him. "Ugh Di! Stop being so mushy! And stop thanking me so many times! It was my pleasure! I hated seeing you that way! I don't like it when you're sad!" My heart melted when he said that. No matter how much we fight I knew that he would always be there for me.
I kissed his cheek and he groaned trying to push me away. "Stop!" I laughed and ruffled his hair one last time before he swatted my hands away. We had some amazing breakfast, waffles with chocolate syrup and some fruit. It was by far the best thing ever. An hour later I drove my Mom and me to the bakery.
Annie's Sweet Tooth! The second branch after she had opened the first one in Dehradun. There are a few more in the other states as well. "Good morning Annie and Meera my child! You're back! I'm so happy to see you here!" Pauline exclaimed. She was an old lady who was in her early seventies but you can never tell by the way she took care of herself. She was always cheerful.
I giggled and hugged her. She has been with us since my mom had started this bakery in Pune. She was a nice lady. I remember how she always let me and Veer taste the batter when we were kids, much to my mother's dismay. "Hi, Pauline! You look amazing!" She laughed when I complimented her.
"Thank you, my child and you look stunning! I'm so proud of you!" I smiled at her when she kissed my forehead. "Thank you so much! I missed you and missed tasting your batters!" I whispered the last part with a giggle.
"Don't worry darling! I'll let you do it this time! I still have a batch of cupcakes to be made!" I pulled away with a grin on my face. "Yes!" I cheered slowly making sure that my Mom wasn't around. Luckily she was busy doing something behind the counter.
"Are all the orders ready Pauline?" My Mom asked loudly. Pauline brushed my hair one last time and walked off to where my Mom was working. They began discussing what was ready and what wasn't. Every week my Mom makes a box full of delicious goodies for the kids in the orphanage.
This was only one of her bakeries. She had a few restaurants that were exclusively there for making free food for the poor. With that, they even opened the restaurant a few hours for the general public. I was immensely proud of her. Sometimes during my leave, I would help her out and personally take the box of delicacies to the orphanage and distribute it among them.
I wandered around and realized that the bakery wasn't yet open. I sat down on one of the chairs that gave me a view of the road. I narrowed my eyes when I noticed a man getting down from a car. It was the same car that followed me here. I thought I was just begin paranoid but I guess not.
I didn't have my gun on me but I did have a knife and my fighting skills. So, I'm guessing that would be more than enough. I don't want to jump right in. I pretended to scroll through my phone as he stared at the bakery and spoke on the phone.
The man looked well built and must be the same age as I am. I need to confirm once again if he was actually following me. I think I'll wait until we reach the orphanage. If he still follows me then I'll take a moment and confront the bastard.
I was forming metal plans in my head. Shit is definitely about to go down. I checked my phone once again only to find that I still didn't have any messages from Veer. I can only hope that he's safe and didn't not get himself tied up with something dangerous.
"Meera, can you come here for a second?" My mother shouted from the other side of the bakery. I sighed and pocketed my phone. I discreetly glanced at the man one last time and walked away towards my mother. I'll let him think that I'm still oblivious, for now! She asked me to carry the boxes and keep them in the van that would be bringing them to the orphanage.
I carried as many boxes as I could and carefully placed them in the van. We even loaded our car with a few of these boxes. Pauline sat in the back seat while my Mom sat next to me. I drove us towards the orphanage and looked at my rearview mirror. The same car and the man were once again following me.
Well, then if he wants to play the game of cat and mouse I'm up for it. Let's do this shit. I speeded towards the orphanage after the next signal so that he would lose track of me. "Good Lord! Meera, why are you speeding up? Slow down for God's sake!" My mom gripped the handle by the window. Lucky for me the next street was almost empty.
Pauline screamed as the tires screeched when I took a turn because of the speed. For some reason, I found this very exhilarating. It was almost like flying a plane but the only drawback was that we didn't actually take off. "Meera, my child! Do you want me to get a heart attack?" Pauline joked and my Mom rolled her eyes. I knew she was scared but I needed him to not follow me.
"Sorry, Ladies we have a situation here! I'm just taking care of it! Two minutes and we'll reach our destination!" My mom gave me a suspicious look but I ignored it for now. As promised I pressed the brake and the car halted right in front of the orphanage. I glanced through the rearview mirror to find that I had managed to get him off my trail successfully.
"Ladies, I hope both of you are okay?" I glanced at my Mom and Pauline who were both pantings trying to catch their breaths. I rolled my eyes at their overreaction. It wasn't that bad. "Oh come on! It was fun! Plus we reached here early! I cut shorted the one-hour journey into a half-hour one." I chirped and clapped my hands excitedly.
My Mom glared at me and began hitting me with a stack of papers. "Oh my god! Is this how you fly those planes? God, you're crazy! What is wrong with you?" I shrugged my shoulders giving her a sweet smile. Pauline laughed, "Well, you've got some guts my girl!" Once the adrenaline rush settled down we got down the car.
I scanned the surroundings once again to make sure he hadn't followed me here. "Is everything okay?" My mom once again asked me. I snapped out of my thoughts. "Uh, yeah of course! Everything's alright! Let's go!" She wanted to ask me what it was but didn't because she knew I wasn't going to give her any answers.
"The van isn't still here! Luckily nothing happened to the other boxes as well. Let's go in and distribute the one that we have first!" Pauline exclaimed excitedly. My mom and I laughed walking behind her.
We played with the kids and distributed some chocolates until the van with the boxes of delicacies arrived. About fifteen minutes later the van was parked at the premises of the orphanage. I brought all the boxes and placed them in the hall where all the children were gathered bursting with excitement.
We disturbed the boxes to them and they were jumping with Joy. Mrs. Roy the owner of the orphanage thanked us and had a huge grin on her face when the children opened the boxes with pure delight on their faces. "Thank you for letting us do this! We'll be back soon!" My mom hugged her and so did I.
I felt happy and elated. As I was leaving a few of them gave me hugs and asked me to come back soon. I ruffled their hair and promised them that I would be back soon. I sucked in a breath when I saw the same man standing outside and scrolling through his phone casually.
I rolled my eyes and mentally cursed myself. So much for acting like a car racer. I clenched my fists, I'm going to go confront this bastard. I booked a cab for Mom and Pauline so that they could leave and I needed them not to be here if things get a little frisky. "Go, I'll come back soon!" Mom was reluctant but Pauline nodded and assured me she'll take care of Mom.
"I'll be fine! Don't worry!" She nodded and went away. I walked towards him and crossed my arms across my chest as I stood right behind him. He was still looking the other way and typing away on his phone. I scoffed and pulled out my knife just to be on the safer side.
"Excuse me start talking or I'll slash your throat!" He turned his head slowly and had cocky look on his face. He removed his sunglasses and hung it on his shirt. "Well, well if it isn't for the great Flight Lieutenant Meera Raichand? An honour to meet you!"
He forwarded his hand for a handshake and I gave him a "Are you serious look?" He threw his head back and laughed loudly. "Who the hell are you?" Even before answering he lunged at me and wrapped his arms around me. My back was pressed against his chest. He twisted the hand that I was holding my knife towards my neck.
I snarled stomping his foot and hit my head against his nose. He groaned and let go of me. I could see a gun tucked in his jeans. He was trying to get the blood off his nose. I pulled the gun out of his jeans and pointed the gun at him. I pulled the trigger and waited for him to tell me who he was.
"I don't really want to shoot you here! It isn't exactly a residential area! Who the fuck are you? Start talking!" He once again smirked and pulled out the handkerchief to hold it against his nose. "Well, I guess I did hear right about you! Welcome to TIIS Miss Meera Raichand! You have been recruited! We require your skills and intel! This was just a test to see if you actually come and confront me!"
My mouth dropped open as I stared at him. The gun was still pointed at him. I had always heard about TIIS but never did I think that I would actually get recruited into it. I always thought it was a myth that a task force like that existed. How wrong was I? He opened the car door and looked at me. "Shall we go?" I gave him a suspicious look.
"Show me your ID! I am not stupid!" I not that daft to get into a stranger's car even if they saw that I have been recruited into a task force. He smirked at me and pulled out his ID and held it right in front of my eyes. Suraj Singhania, 26 years old and a Captian in the Indian Army, I snatched and examined it to make sure that it wasn't fake with one hand while I pointed the gun at him with my other hand.
"Now shall we go?" I scrutinized his face for a few more minutes. I walked towards the back of the car and peeped in to make sure nothing was there. "What is the Indian army motto?" He blinked his eyes for a few seconds and then told it with a proud smile on his face. "Sewa Paramo Dharma! As in Service Before Self!" I lowered the gun. I looked for signs to see if he was lying but no, he's in the clear. He was immensely proud to serve our country.
"Shall we go now?" I threw the gun at him and he caught it without a hassle. He gestured towards the car. "Get in, we're going to the headquarters! Time for us to start working!" I sat in the front seat as he drove towards wherever the headquarters were. Now what?
