Meera and Veer embraced for a few more minutes. Until Veer realized what he was doing wasn't right, he broke the promise he had made. This was against everything. Meera sighed and wiped her tears.
Veer ran his fingers through his short hair and moved away from her. He didn't know how to react. Meera cleared her throat and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Meera, I'm sorry that um was out of order. I didn't mean to you know it just happened. I was only trying to comfort you that's all! I promise it was nothing else!"
Meera would have slapped him if she didn't find his rambling cute. She had an amused smile on her face. All she could think of was how Veer Gupta was rambling and not just normal rambling he was rambling nervously.
Meera wanted to squish his cheeks and kiss him. For the first time years, he looked really adorable and Meera couldn't help but admire him. A tinge of hope and happiness rose in her heart. This reaction of Veer towards her was enough for her to conclude that he still cares about her.
She waved her hands in the air shaking her head. "Umm, Veer it's okay! You don't have to apologize! I get it!" Veer nodded his head and coughed awkwardly into his fist. Meera bit her lips trying to control her smile.
She sighed and turned to face the kids. She stands by what she said. She was lucky to have found her parents and so was Veer. Both of them weren't here for long but she vividly remembers the emotions and the turmoil that she had faced during the short period of time when she stayed in this place.
Veer too turned to look at the kids. He had a heavy feeling in his chest. His Nea his mother had saved him and if she hadn't he couldn't even begin to comprehend all the things he would have to face. Fighting this world all alone without any support at such a young age isn't easy at all.
No kid should ever go through that. They stood there in silence for a few minutes and reminisced about some of their joyful moments in this very place. Meera laughed when she remembered how she chased Veer in this very hall with a piece of cake in her hand ready to go right at his face. Veer too smiled when the same memory flashed before his eyes.
|Flashback|
It was Veer's eleventh birthday. As usual, they had planned to celebrate it with the kids in the orphanage. Sister Brenda was more than happy to participate and be a part of this celebration.
Like every year Viraj ordered a truck full of books, stationery, and all the other study materials for the children. Naina made sure that they were some storybooks too. Veer and Meera together would distribute the items to every kid in the orphanage.
The look of happiness and contentment was the only thing that mattered the most. Annie was always the one who was responsible for the cake and food. She would always make it extra special. She even ensured that all the kids got a box full of cupcakes.
That day after Veer and Meera distributed the items to the kids, they laughed and played as well. Annie bought the cake. Meera gleamed at the cake that was a cars themed cake while Veer jumped with joy. Meera was a tad bit taller than Veer which she always teased him about it.
Meera clapped her hands together and bumped her shoulders with Veers. "Make a wish Veer!" Veer smiled at her nodding his head he blew the candle. Instead of making a wish for himself, he prayed that all the kids who didn't have a family should get one soon.
Meera squealed clapping her hands as Veer blew the candle. Every kid in the room was happy for him and squealed clapping their hands together just like Meera did. Veer fed the cake first to Sister Brenda. Her eyes gleamed with joy, she did not doubt in her mind that Veer would turn out to be a fine young man just like his father Viraj.
She blessed him and fed him a piece of cake as well. He then fed a piece of cake to Meera too. Meera cut a piece and her eyes gleamed with mischief. Veer's eyes widened when he realized what she was about to do.
Meera lunged at him with a squeal while Veer sucked his head and ran fast in the opposite direction. Meera laughed chasing Veer across the hall. Their parents laughed as they watched their kids run around the hall.
"Meera! No please!" Veer begged her as they stood on the opposite sides of the table. Meera let out an evil laugh shaking her head no, while Veer rolled his eyes at the antics of his dramatic friend.
Meera placed one hand on her hip and blew a piece of hair away from her face. With the cake still in one hand, she narrowed her eyes at Veer. "That's not fair Veer! You dunked my entire face in the cake last time. It's only fair that I cover your face with cake as well. Besides, this isn't even a big piece." Meera declared sassily.
Veer frowned and shook his head. He pointed at his T-shirt which was black and had some Harry Potter quote on it. As far as Meera was aware this was his favorite T-shirt. "No way! I love this shirt! You can't get cake all over it!"
Meera scoffed rolling her eyes. She said the same thing when he put cake all over her face and dress. That was her favorite dress, but no Veer had to ruin it. Now it was her turn. So, she will do it no matter what! No one can stop her. Revenge was sweet and she was soon going to get the taste of it.
"Oh Boohoo! You didn't listen to me when I begged you on my birthday! So, I'm not going to listen to you! Also, I am going to put the cake on your face, not your shirt." With that, Meera chased him, and Veer once again screamed running in a random direction, Meera laughed as she ran behind him. Veer halted when he bumped into his father.
"Dad, move! She's getting closer! I need to get away!" Veer glanced behind to realize that Meera was only a few feet away. Viraj smirked at his son and held his shoulders in a tight grip. Veer screeched and tried to get away as Meera approached closer.
"Dad, this isn't fair!" Arjun, Annie, and Naina stood at the side and watched them with an amused face. Naina snapped photos of them while Annie was recording the entire scene. Meera laughed and stood right in front of Veer.
With an excited squeal and a wicked smiled she threw the cake on Veer's face, it hit his face with a splat sound. She rubbed her hands all over his face to smear the cake and icing on his face. Veer shrieked and tried to get away but his Dad had a tight grip on him. Meera stopped only after she was satisfied with the amount of cake that covered his face.
She laughed and stepped away. Viraj laughed letting go of the grip he had on his son. He ruffled his hair as Veer glared at Meera who was giggling away. "Sorry, son! I had to do it! She's too cute I couldn't say no to my Meera!"
Viraj walked towards Meera and kissed her forehead. Meera giggled and gave him a high fi. "Thank you, uncle!" Veer stomped his foot and sprinted towards the garden area. He was a bit irritated but he didn't mind. He knew that Meera would come and apologize to him.
Meera just like he had predicted walked towards the bench where Veer was seated on. Veer scoffed and turned his face to the other side. Meera laughed softly and wiped his face with a tissue. "Veer don't be so grumpy, this was just innocent fun! You did the same thing to me when it was my birthday! It's only fair that I return the favor." Meera pouted as she stated her point.
Meera's lips trembled as Veer snatched the bottle from her hand and washed his face with water. Veer was only teasing her but Meera felt really hurt by his behavior. She never acted this way when he put cake all over her face.
Veer turned his face to glance at Meera who now had tears in her eyes and were slowly trickling down her cheeks. Veer moved closer to her and wiped the tears. Meera glared at him and swatted his hands away, she crossed her arms across her chest.
Veer chuckled under his breath and hugged her from the side. Meera scoffed and tried to push him away. "Meera, I'm sorry! I was only having some fun! Forgive me? I'm not mad at you! Promise!"
Meera scoffed and tried to push him away but Veer held her tightly. Finally, she sighed and turned to face him. "Fine, I forgive you!" She sighed dramatically and hugged him back. Veer laughed shaking his head. Meera wished that they would be friends forever.
|Flashback Ends|
Meera snapped out of her thoughts when a little girl ran into her and fell. "Oops! Are you okay sweetie?" Meera kneeled in front of her and helped her to stand. She dusted her dress and gasped when she stared at the cute girl's face.
The girl would be about three years old. She had beautiful hazel eyes, chubby cheeks that were tainted red due to all the excitement, a cute button nose, and bow-shaped lips. Meera's heart went out to this little girl she brushed the girl's hair and smiled at her.
The girl gave her a shy smile. "Thank Ku!" She whispered and Meera stared at her with a warm smile on her face. The girl was carrying a few books with her tiny hands. "What's your name, pretty girl?" The girl stared at the woman before her with curious eyes, she liked Meera's kind face and eyes.
"My namwe Tarwa!" Meera's heart melted when she heard her pronounce cutely. "That's such a pretty name! Hi Tara, I'm Meera!" Meera held out her hand for a handshake. Tara forwarded her hand hesitantly and shook it with hers.
Meera smiled at the little girl. She was the prettiest girl she had ever seen. All she could wonder was how could someone ever abandon her? Meera couldn't help herself. She leaned forward and kissed her chubby cheeks. Tara giggled and caressed her soft palms across Meera's face.
"It was nice meeting you, Tara!" Meera exclaimed with a smile and stood up. "Be careful Sweetie! Don't run too fast!" Meera brushed her hair while Tara nodded her head. She waved her hands at Meera, with a giggle she sprinted away towards where her friends were waiting for her.
Veer had witnessed the entire encounter with an awe expression on his face. He knew that Meera was an amazing woman and was so damn kind. But, to witness this entire scene tugged his heartstrings. For some reason the entire encounter between Meera and the little girl made him want Meera. It ignited something in him that was uncontrollable.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. He clenched his hands into tight fists and locked his jaw. He cannot be thinking like this, Meera and he did not belong with each other. He took a deep breath and was about to walk away when Meera gasped.
Veer whipped his head to see that Meera's eyes were wide and her mouth fell open. Veer frowned and turned to see what exactly was Meera shocked about. Veer slapped his forehead with his right palm when he saw the entire Baccha party enter the hall.
It was none other than Ira and Tanya with the entire gang. Nisha, Ankit, Harish, and Andy followed right behind. Veer walked towards Meera and stood next to her. Meera cursed under her breath and pulled Veer out of the hall before any of their annoying siblings or their friends who were more like siblings would notice them.
She sighed in relief as they managed to escape without anyone noticing them. "Meera! Did you call them here? I swear if you did I am never talking to you!" Meera almost laughed at the way he whined and complained. She also wanted to point out that they weren't exactly on talking terms for him to be making such threats.
She controlled her laugh when she realized how tense Veer actually was. She rolled her eyes and glared at him. "What the hell Veer? Why would I ask them to come here? They all are so overbearing! I would never do that!"
"What's the big deal if they're here? Let them celebrate your birthday too! Not a big deal! Maybe they're here to give away more things for the kids here? How bad can that be?"
Veer groaned with frustration and ran his hands over his face. He opened his eyes and held Meera's shoulders in a tight grip. Meera gulped when she realized how close they were. The smell of his cologne overpowered her senses.
"Really? Do you actually believe that they're here only to distribute more gifts to the kids? Then why did you pull me away before they could notice us?." Meera wondered for a while, it was really hard to think clearly with him this close to her face.
Then it hit her, she had seen Tanya holding a cake box. Meera fell into fits of laughter and clapped her hands. As far as she knows Veer had refused to cut a cake since his teenage years, he had done it only because his Mom forced him and refused to talk to him if he didn't cut the cake.
She even knows that he hadn't cut a single cake on his birthday for almost seven years. She knew that because Tanya always called Meera and whined about how boring her big brother was. Meera would sadly listen to her and hum softly. Those days were the hardest.
Veer once again groaned and shoved Meera. She stopped laughing and shoved him back. For the next few minutes, they kept hitting and shoving each other. Much to Meera's surprise Veer started laughing as well. She took a second to admire the sight.
Her heart fluttered with happiness as she heard him laugh. It had been so long since she had seen him this carefree and had heard the sound of his laugh. He had a husky laugh that sends shivers down her body. His eyes crinkled and she could even see his facial muscles relax.
Veer stopped laughing when he realized Meera stare burning holes in his face. This entire keeping up with his promise business was definitely turning out to be a train wreck. He cleared his throat and took a couple of steps away from Meera.
Meera sighed when his face turned serious the very next second. "What do we do about them? Can't we just get out of here?" Meera was about to answer when her phone started ringing. She looked at the caller id and sighed showing it to Veer who cursed under his breath.
Tanya was calling Meera. "Veer listen let's just go and see what they want from us! It can't be that bad, can it?" Veer shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair frustrated with the entire situation.
"No Meera let's get out of here before they notice us! It's Tanya and Ira we're talking about! They are really bad together. I'm telling you they'll make me cut that damn cake and sing that god awful birthday song which by the way I'm not interested in!"
Meera was going to answer his question when Tanya and Ira screamed "Found you!" together. They were shocked to see Veer and Meera standing close to each other. They could barely contain their excitement but decided to keep their mouths shut as it would ruin the moment.
Veer once again groaned shaking his head. "Tanya I love you but I'm not doing this! I'm not interested in cutting cakes! I'm not turning four! I'm turning twenty-six!" Meera wanted to laugh, he was acting like a petulant child. Once again for the second time in a day, she wanted to squish his cheeks and coo at him.
She knew that this argument was a waste of time. When Ira and Tanya wanted something they always got it. Ira and Tanya started begging him together. They even went to an extent where they began fake crying. Meera witnessed the entire scene with an amused look on her face.
"Veer! Don't be such a ninny! It's just cake cutting, not rocket science!" Meera exclaimed while the girls giggled. "Yeah! Listen to Meera Di!" Veer glared at Meera for supporting them when she was supposed to be on his side. He shook his head and cursed internally.
"Woah Woah my side? Something is wrong with me! I need to get away from her!" Veer muttered under his breath and shook his head trying to get these thoughts out of his mind. Things were shifting and the barrier he had built between Meera and him over the years was now being destroyed. He had to distance himself before things got out of hand. Although he wondered why Meera wasn't pushing him away.
He snapped out of his trance when Tanya shook his arms. Even before Veer could answer she pulled him inside the hall. Veer scowled at Meera. "You will pay for this!" He shouted while Meera laughed. "I look forward to it!" She replied winking at him. Veer blinked his eyes for a second. Had Meera just winked at him? Before he could even comprehend Tanya had already pulled him near the table that had a cake on it.
Even Harish Neena's son who found it hard to socialize or portray any sort of emotions was excited for this. The cake was a huge one. It was a three-tier cake. Ira arranged the other two pieces on the top and clapped her hands together.
The kids surrounded them and began bouncing on their feet excited to taste the cake. Veer was about to argue again but he sighed when he saw the excited faces of all the kids. He can't break their tiny hearts. Taking a deep breath, he swallowed the obvious dread and went to stand beside Tanya who handed him a knife.
"Come on Bhai! The munchkins are waiting!" Tanya chimed and jumped on her feet. Veer rolled his eyes and shook his head. Meera's gaze locked with Veer's she gave him a smile nodding her head. Veer sighed and cut the cake. He cringed when Ira and Tanya started singing the birthday song on top of their voices.
Meera laughed so hard while recording the entire moment. Veer fed the cake to everyone, much to everyone's surprise he even fed a piece to Andy. Ira smirked and pulled Meera until she was standing next to Veer.
"Di! Now you feed Bhai!" Meera wanted to argue but she noticed from her peripheral vision. Veer was shaking his head telling her not to do so. "You'll just make it worse! Might as well get it over with!" Veer whispered and Meera nodded her head.
She smirked when an idea struck her. She cut a piece of cake and bought it near his mouth, but before Veer could take a bite, she smeared it all over his face. Veer growled while the rest of them laughed loudly. "Meera! What the hell?" He bellowed and took a piece of cake ready to put it on her face just like she had done.
Before he could do that Meera screeched and began running. Veer laughed out and began chasing her. Tanya and Ira were busy squealing and photographing and recording the entire scene before them. Andy frowned but shook his head with a smile. "Oh my god! They're so cute together!"
Tanya crooned, Ira nodded her head sighing dreamily. "Yes, they are! Hopefully, our bonfire plan works!" Ira muttered and Tanya nodded her head. They stood a few feet away from them to give the duo some privacy. These two had planned for something huge, Meera and Veer had no clue as to what was in store for them.
Meanwhile, Veer chased Meera all the way to the garden area. "God damn it! You're so fast!" Meera laughed and jumped over a brick that hindered her path. "Well, I'm didn't become Flight Lieutenant Meera Raichand just like that Captain Veer Gupta!"
Veer laughed again and his breath hitched as he chased her across the path. Meera took a turn and ran with a smile. She admits that she's fast but Veer was already catching up to her. They hadn't cashed each other since her seventeenth birthday. It had been a very long time. The void in Meera's heart was gone and she felt only happiness.
Meera squealed when Veer snaked his arm over her waist, pulling her towards his strong chest. He laughed and smeared the cake over her face. It almost looked like nothing had happened ever between them. Meera screamed slapping his hands away. She tried to pry away from his grip but Veer held her tightly.
"VEER! You are an ass! You cannot put the cake on me! The tradition was to smear cake on the birthday boy's face, not mine! Ugh, let me go!" Veer laughed again, his stomach hurt a bit from all the laughing. Never in all these years had he laughed this much. That's when it hit him how much he had missed Meera, his best friend.
Meera scoffed and finally managed to pry herself out of his grip. She turned her face to throw a glare at him. She shrieked stomping her foot on the grass. She wiped the cake from her face and whined when her hands turned sticky from all the icing. Veer stood there laughing at her antics.
Meera fumed with anger. She lunged at him and in the process lost her footing falling right on Veer who fell on the grass with a thud. Veer groaned when he felt Meera's weight over his chest. "Woman how much do you weigh?" Meera gasped, she glared at him while pinching his sides.
Veer flinched but he had an amused expression on his face. "Just shut up Veer! Are you insinuating that I'm heavy? I swear I'll punch you!" Veer laughed while Meera screamed and finally managed to stand up. Veer chuckled and stood up.
She was about to storm away when Veer yanked her back into his chest. Meera sucked in a breath. Their faces were only inches apart. Veer's breath fanned over her face. Meera breathed in his scent, her mind went into a frenzy. She could stare at those beautiful black eyes forever.
Veer had completely forgotten about the promise. When Meera was this close all he could do wish he had more time with her. Meera had managed to get most of the cake out of her face but Veer still had icing and a few cake chunks stuck on his face.
He playfully smirked at her and leaned his face until their noses were touching. Meera closed her eyes and her heart rate increased erratically. Veer inhaled her lavender scent. He kisses her cheek which tasted amazing, a perfect mixture of Vanilla and her lavender scent. Meera gulped and tried to calm herself.
When Veer was sure that Meera was captivated and lost in his touch. He let out a chuckle and brushed his icing-covered cheek over Meera's cheek. She opened her eyes and gave him an accusing look. Before she could take a chance and scream at him he winked at her and walked away.
It took him exactly seventy seconds when he realized what he had done was not acceptable. He entered the washroom and washed his face. He banged his hands on the wall all the while cursing under his breath. Starting at his reflection in the mirror he pointed at himself.
"What the fuck is wrong with you??? Stay away from her!" He warned himself. He let out a huge breath and splashed water on his face. He wiped his face with a tissue, crumpling it he threw it in the bin.
Meanwhile, Meera stood there as heat crept through her body. A few minutes of contemplating later her lips turned into a huge grin. Veer was laughing and chasing her just like old times. What she wouldn't do to live that moment again? She felt even more hopeful. He may try to stay away from her but Meera was determined to clear everything between them this weekend before it's too late.
She smiled walking towards where Tanya and Ira were standing. She was thankful that no one had followed them. If anyone would have seen them this way they would have been forced to explain a lot of things.
"Oh my god! I have never seen Bhai this happy in eons! He managed to get the cake on you huh?" Meera giggled and nodded her head. She thanked Ira who handed her a water bottle and some tissues. She dabbed some water on the tissue and wiped the icing on her face.
Nisha, Ankit, Harish, and Andy were serving the cake to all the kids. Veer entered the hall his face now completely clean. Meera's heart thudded for the millionth time today. She frowned when she noticed the stoic expression on his face.
Making Veer understand what she wanted was not going to be an easy task at all. Meera ignored the sadness that bubbled in her heart. For the rest of the day, Veer ignored her while Meera made attempts to talk to him. She let out a breath of frustration. She decided that she was going to confront him on his birthday. He had to listen this time by hook or crook. Meera was going to come for him and he better be ready!
