CHAPTER 21

|AUTHOR|

Veer entered the house with a glare on his face. Kabir smiled at Veer but he just sneered back. Meera was setting up the table so she didn't really notice what had been going on at the front door. Karan and Kabir introduced themselves. Karan tried to suppress his grin.

He had never seen his best friend this jealous. Sheena bought a few more dishes from the kitchen and placed them on the dining table. "Meera! Kabir is so cool! I have to admit he is so charming!"

Meera let out a laugh and nodded her head. This was the first time Kabir was actually meeting Sheena. She had told her about him over the years but this was their first interaction face to face.

"I agree! He can be really charming! He even asked me out a few times. But, you know I never saw him more than a friend!" Sheena raised her brows and bit her tongue, Meera knew she wanted to say something more but for the sake of both of them she didn't really say anything and she was thankful for that.

A few hours ago after Meera had given Veer a piece of her mind and stormed towards her room, Sheena had decided it was best to leave her friend alone for a few minutes. Meera cried into her pillow for a few minutes. She calmed down after a few minutes. She realized that she was fighting a losing battle.

If Veer wanted to be with her or start any sort of relationship he had to take the first step and actually tell her that he cares about her until then she wasn't going to do anything. It isn't fair that she puts herself out there completely and he does nothing but plays around with her feelings.

Meera's head started hurting more the more she thought about Veer. She sighed and swallowed a pain killer. She sighed leaning her head against the headboard of her bed. She was so tired all she wanted to do was sleep and not think about Veer.

She was kind of relieved that her vacation time was almost over. A few more weeks and she should get her official orders for the next deployment. Work was her only solace, it had been for the past few years. Flying those planes and protecting her country were the only things that kept her sane when Veer had ignored her. Veer and Meera had never gotten closure. That night had left both of them with feelings that weighed heavily on their heart.

Meera was lost thinking about where and when exactly had Veer and her relationship become so complicated. She snapped out of her trance when her phone started ringing. She sighed and answered the call without even checking the caller id.

"Oh my god! Meera! I swear I'll never let you get out of my sight ever again. What do you think of yourself? Couldn't you have texted at least?" Meera sighed and tried to interrupt her mother but Annie was on a roll. She went on and on about how irresponsible Meera was for not informing her.

Meera let out an amused laugh as her mother ranted. What baffled her was that her Mom was still worried so much about her despite her reminding her a million times that she was fine and now an adult who could take care of herself. "Mom! Take a breath, will you! Chill! I am fine! I'm really fine! I was just trying to stay away from all electronics and have some me time! That's all! I'm sorry that I worried you!" Annie sighed and hummed into the phone.

"Fine! But, please don't do this to me ever again!" Meera let out a gush of breath. "Of course Mom never! But, might I remind you that I'm a grown adult and I can take care of myself!" Meera replied with an airy voice she already knew what her mother's reply would be but she never forgets to remind her.

"Meera I don't care if you turn forty I'll still be worried about you. It's my job to worry about you and know that you're safe no matter what. So, don't tell me that you're an adult and blah blah!" Meera sighed, nodding her head as if her mother were actually here.

"Okay, Mom! I'm sorry! I'll not do it again I promise!" Annie let out a satisfied hum. They spoke for a few more minutes after which Meera said she was tired and wanted to catch a nap before dinner. No way in hell was she telling her mom what had happened yesterday. It was better to keep her mom away from all of this. It was better to keep both her parents away from this.

Meera sighed and blankly stared at the wall. A few minutes later she heard a tentative knock on her door. She knew it was Sheena. Meera burrowed herself further into the pillows and asked her to come in. The door creaked as Sheena opened it and entered the room.

Sheena folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes at her best friend. Meera sighed closing her eyes because she knew that Sheena was about to question her endlessly. Before Sheena could fire away at her, Meera held her hand and pulled herself into a sitting position.

"Sheena I'm really tired so before you fire away with your questions I want to make one thing clear. I really can't tell you how this happened!" Meera pointed at her injuries while Sheena nodded her head slowly.

"I'm sorry but that's classified information related to national security. So, don't ask me." Sheena nodded her head while Meera smiled and sat comfortably against the headboard."Fair enough! I won't ask you what happened or how this happened! But, are you okay? Is it still hurting?" Meera shrugged her shoulders and absent-mindedly ran her fingers over the bandage that was on her wrist. "I'm fine! My head hurts a bit but I took a pain killer so it's just heavy right now. I should be fine after I get some sleep."

Sheena smiled satisfied with her friend's answer. She walked towards the bed and got inside the covers next to Meera. "Well, now that's out of the plate want to tell me what happened with you know who?" Meera giggled when Sheena cupped her hand over her lips and whispered the last part. Veer was definitely no Voldemort but he was annoying at times correction most of the times.

She stopped giggling and stared blankly at the wall. "Not really! Just the usual! Always the same argument! I mean at least these days considering he avoided me like a plague for the past few years." Sheena sighed and wrapped her arm around her friend's shoulder.

"It's okay! Want to elaborate?" That's all it took for Meera to pour out her feelings. She told him about his weird behavior since Sister Brenda's passing away and how he went from hot to cold. She told her every single thing. By the end of it, Sheena's eyes were wide and her mouth was wide open.

"Meera! This is more than what I had assumed. He really did all of that?" Meera sighed tiredly and nodded her head. "Yes, ma'am he did! I'm so tired! I just want him to be frank with me instead of playing all these stupid games and beating around the bush!" Sheena nodded her head obliviously and was thinking deeply about something.

"What? What are you thinking about?" Sheena sighed and turned towards Meera. She held Meera's hand and took a deep breath because what she was about to tell was sure as hell going to get Meera agitated. Meera raised her brows with curiosity and waited for her best friend to tell her what she was thinking.

"Look Meera I understand what you're going through and I agree that the way he behaved was not acceptable. But, you need to understand that you're stubborn as well! Have you ever thought about how hard he must be battling with himself? Have you ever thought about how difficult this is for him as well?"Meera frowned because Sheena did have a point. She never actually thought about what he must have been going through. Still, she wasn't going to accept it. She had been suffering too. "Are you supporting him? Seriously, he's the one that pushed me away! He's the one who chooses to behave this way! Not me!"

She sighed shaking her head. "I'm not supporting him. I agree what he did was unacceptable like I mentioned before. But, both of you are so stubborn and I feel like there are some ego clashes as well. Veer is not sure if he wants to take a step and you are waiting for him to take a step. Meera you need to talk to Veer rather than ignoring him. Men are stupid and daft at times! Plus, this is like a losing battle! If neither of you makes a move then both of you will suffer. You choose what you want Meera. Not everyone gets another chance to get back their loved ones. Don't let it go is all I'm saying. The rest is really up to you. Fighting and blaming will not take you both anywhere. You both have been together for so long. Whatever happened was not good but there must be something that made him do that right? I know you tried asking him about it but you didn't try hard Meera! You're sacred it has something to do with you but how will you know until you ask him? Fix things or in your case start things before it actually ends for good."

Sheena let out a gush of breath when she finished stating her point and squeezed Meera's hand who was now even more lost than before. Deep down she knew Sheena was right but wasn't ready to admit it. She could take the first step but like Sheena said it was her ego stopping her from doing so because last time she did and everything was ruined.

Her friend was right, Meera had never pestered Veer hard enough to actually get him to tell her what happened on his eighteenth birthday. He always ignored it and then he got himself a girlfriend which was another hinder. Sheena was spot on with her observations. She was scared that Veer would reject her again and this time it will be more than before but only if she knew the truth.

Meera needed time to contemplate things. She needs to be away from Veer to do that because with him near her it would drive her crazy. A few more minutes later after had she thought deeply about what Sheena had stated Meera's phone once again rang.

It was Kabir who wanted to know if he could come home for dinner as he had come to Pune for some personal reasons. Apparently, Meera's mother had told him that she was here. Meera gladly agreed and a few minutes later Kabir showed up. He helped them with dinner and just then the bell rang. Kabir insisted that he would open the door.

Meera snapped out of her trance when she heard Sheena gasp beside her. "Well, this evening just got interesting!" Meera's eyes widened when she saw Veer enter the dining hall right behind Kabir. She snorted when she noticed him glaring at Kabir.

She groaned internally because she wanted some peace of mind which was impossible to achieve with Veer here. "Meera looks like you have a couple more guests! I hope that's okay?" Kabir joined his hands together and asked her.

Meera was lost staring at Veer who was undoubtedly starting at Meera. Sheena chuckled and bumped her shoulders with Meera's. "What?" She glanced at Sheena who rolled her eyes. It was obvious to everyone that they were crazy about each other only they were stupid enough to avoid it.

"It's okay Kabir! We have bounty amount of food!" Karan rubbed his palms together and jumped on his feet like an excited toddler. Kabir nodded his head but was still looking at Meera with a curious expression.

Meera whipped her head towards Sheena who now had a victorious smirk on her face."Hi Karan, um hello Veer!" She whispered the last part and avoided looking at him. "Hey, Meera!" Karan replied enthusiastically and Veer nodded with a look of acknowledgment and glared at Kabir.

"Why don't you guys sit down and make yourselves comfortable! Sheena and I will bring more plates!" She gritted the last part all the while glaring at Sheena. She pulled her into the kitchen.

When they were far enough that is when Meera's anger unleashed."What the fuck Sheena? Why did you call Veer? Seriously, I needed some space! I don't want him here breathing down my neck!" Sheena finally burst into fits of laughter. She clapped her hands together while Meera hit her shoulders repeatedly.

"This isn't funny!" A few more laughs from Sheena and a few more beatings from Meera both of them calmed down. "In my defense, I only called Karan, I didn't know Veer would show up! I swear!" Meera rolled her eyes and placed her hands on the counter.

"That's bullshit and you know it! You knew that if you called Karan Veer would show up as well! What is your problem? I don't want him here right now!" Meera screeched softly and peeped into the dining hall making sure no one heard her.

Sheena sighed and pulled her friend to face her. "Meera seriously chill! It's not a big deal. It's not like both of you are going to talk to each other, are you? I mean unless you want to?" Meera shook her head vigorously."No! I need my space, Sheena! I need to be a bit saner to do this, not injured or having a splitting headache! He can eat and leave that's all it's not a big deal!" Meera muttered, which sounded like she was convincing herself rather than convincing Sheena.

Sheena wanted to point out the obvious but she was going to let it go for now. "Then come on! Let's go and set the table!" Meera took a deep breath and nodded her head. "Ohh I found some wine by the way! Obviously, you can't drink but the rest of us will!"Sheena pulled out a bottle of wine and winked at Meera who nodded her head but rolled her eyes.

By the time Meera and Sheena got back to the table, Karan and Kabir were engaged in a serious discussion while Veer was frowning and playing with the fork on the table. He didn't like it that Karan was talking to the man who made his life miserable by constantly flirting with Meera or being close to her.

Sheena served Karan and Kabir while Meera served Veer. They could have helped themselves but again it was all Sheena's plan. Meera wanted to hit her best friend but decided to do that later after her guests left

.The menu was simple. They had made some chicken fry for starters, the main course was dal and rice. There was even some Cesar salad. Dessert was a brownie that was already pre-made by Annie. All they had to do was bake the batter.

Veer was staring at Meera with a curious look when she served him. He didn't like the way she was ignoring his stare and his presence. That's when it hit him how badly he had behaved with her. He regretted saying all those things but that was the only way to keep her away.

If he hadn't done that then things would have escalated and then Meera would have been hurt. He made a mental note to talk to her about it in private.

He would make things clear so there wouldn't be any misunderstandings anymore. He could smell her lavender scent. He wanted to drown himself in that aroma. Meera slammed a spoon next to his table and walked away to sit next to Kabir who Veer loathed from the bottom of his heart.

Meera smirked at Veer when she noticed him fuming. For the rest of the dinner, Meera and Veer didn't utter a single word other than nodding their head and chuckling occasionally. The only people conversing were Karan, Kabir, and Sheena. The wine looked so good that Meera was envious of the ones who could drink right now. Even Veer looked somewhat relaxed each time he took a sip.

Sheena was drunk and a giggling mess by the time she was done with her second glass. They served the brownies along with some ice cream. That was a huge hit. Soon after they were done polishing the dessert bowls much to Veer's relief and happiness Kabir left. He fumed with anger when Meera hugged Kabir.

Much to Meera's disappointment Veer and Karan decided to stay back."Why do you want to stay?" Meera asked Karan with a stoic face. Karan shrugged and gulped. He was actually doing this because Sheena had asked him to do it. He stuttered and looked at Sheena for help but she was far gone.

"Well, right we had too much to drink Meera! It's better if we sober up and leave the next morning. Drinking and driving isn't the best combination." Veer gave his friend an impressed look and made a mental note to thank him later. This was his opportunity to go talk to Meera privately without anyone hovering over them.

Meera wanted to protest but it was a valid reason. She nodded her head and threw her hands in the air heaving a breath of defeat. She cringed when Karan and Sheena began flirting. They were drunk and giggling.

She switched on the television for them and walked towards the dining hall to clean up. Veer chuckled softly at his best friend who was now snoozing away next to Meera's best friend who was sleeping with her mouth wide open. He always knew both of them had a thing for each other. Sighing he pulled out a duvet from one of the guest rooms and placed it over them.

He wanted to go to the kitchen and talk to Meera but chickened out at the last minute. He sighed and switched off the television. All of a sudden he felt claustrophobic. The stress of today and yesterday was catching up to him. He decided to go to the terrace to get some air.

He let out a peaceful breath and leaned against the ledge. He closed his eyes for a moment and felt at peace when the cool air hit his face. He always loved being on the terrace. It was his favorite spot. He pulled out a cigarette lighting it with a lighter he puffed out smoke. He immediately felt the tension ebb away from his body.

He knew he had to quit because it wasn't good but for now, this was what he wanted. Veer smoked while waiting for Meera. He had a feeling that once she was done cleaning the kitchen she would come here.

Meera washed the plates and the glasses. She placed the leftover food in the kitchen and scrubbed the kitchen counter. Once she was satisfied with her job she washed her hands and walked towards the living room.

A small smirk played on her face when she noticed Karan and Sheena huddled together under a blanket on the couch. Not wanting to let go of this opportunity she clicked several pictures of them.

She smiled and pocketed her phone when she was done with it. Meera always knew Sheena had a thing for Karan but never said anything. This was her sweet revenge against Sheena for making her suffer through this dinner.

She peeked into the guest room hoping to find Veer sleeping there but frowned when she didn't find him there. Shrugging away the obvious disappointment she went towards the terrace. She sucked in a breath when she found a familiar figure leaning against the ledge.

She was confused as to what exactly she wanted. Did she actually want Veer here or not? Shrugging away the questions her mind threw at her she gulped and walked towards the other side.

Veer smiled and stubbed his cigarette when he noticed Meera leaning against the ledge on the other side of the terrace. He knew what he had to do and decided to finish it as soon as possible.

He walked towards her and stood right next to her. Meera felt the heat of his body radiating next to her. She decided to not react and stare at the sky.

Veer frowned when Meera refused to acknowledge his presence. He stepped closer so that their shoulders were brushing. He grew irritated and agitated by the second.

He could accept her glares but he didn't like it when she ignored him. Not wanting to give up that easily he cleared his throat. "Meera! Can we talk?" Meera closed her eyes as she felt goosebumps all over her body.

What in the world was wrong with her body to make her feel this way? His husky voice left her breathless. She squeezed her eyes one more time before turning towards Veer and glaring at him."What do you want Veer?" Meera let out a sigh of defeat.

Veer closed his eyes and sniffed the air making sure she was real and not his imagination. Meera frowned and snapped her fingers in front of his face. "What are you doing? Are you smelling me?"Meera asked while letting out an amused laugh. Veer turned his head towards the sky and glared at it. "No! Of course not! I was just thinking!" Meera rolled her eyes but chuckled. She stopped laughing when she realized that she was supposed to be mad at him.

She internally cursed herself for being so weak when it came to him. But, she needed some clarity today. Either he lets her go completely or makes an effort to earn her trust back but mediating between both of them was impossible."Veer get to the point! I'm really tired!" Meera whispered, staring at the beautiful night sky, and crossed her arms across her chest. Veer took a deep breath and he knew it was now or never kind of situation. He had to apologize now when he had the opportunity.

"Meera I'm really sorry for what I said in the car! It wasn't meant to come out that way. I um I just didn't like it that you got hurt and were pulled in between all of this." Meera's mouth almost dropped open because Veer Gupta had actually apologized to her and that too without that stupid blank look on his face. But, she maintained a stern face.

"Veer you still shouldn't have said that! I can take care of myself. I don't need you to save me! Do you understand?"

Veer sighed nodding his head slowly. Never in all these years has Meera seen him this vulnerable."Yeah, I know! But, you need to understand where I'm coming from. I um I thought it was my fault that you were caught up in this situation! You were never supposed to be a part of this mess and never supposed to get hurt! I'm really sorry! Maybe I was frustrated with myself and I vented it out on you! I apologize for that!"

Meera's heart fluttered. At that moment she had gotten a glimpse of the old Veer. The considerate one, the one who was sweet and sometimes funny. The one she didn't want to admit it but it was right there. The one she had fallen in love with.

She had lost him but now she could see that he was still there. Hiding under some layers of hate and insecurities. Only if she could find out what happened that day. But she didn't want to ruin this moment. She had been carving for this for almost seven years.

She sighed and shook her head. "Veer, that's still doesn't give you an excuse to behave that way. Also, since when do you care what happens to me? You haven't for almost seven years so why now?"Meera immediately regretted what she had said. Veer closed his eyes and clenched his fists.

Meera was right, why did he care all of a sudden? He was trying to keep Meera and everyone else away from his life but now all of a sudden it seemed impossible to do so.

Something in him had snapped ever since Sister Brenda passed away. It told him that this was his last opportunity to reconcile with everyone especially Meera.

Without even thinking through he pushed Meera against the corner of the terrace until her back was pressed against the railing.

Meera's chest moved up and down rapidly. Her heart was slamming against her chest. She could smell his cologne which was a mix of smoke and spice. He leaned forward until their faces were only inches apart.

Veer placed his forehead against Meera's and closed his eyes. Meera let out a gush of breath and closed her eyes as well. She didn't know what this meant for him or them but all she knew was that a storm could come or the world could end but she would still be protected.

Veer cupped her cheeks and kissed her forehead. "Do you really think that I didn't care about you all these years? Do you really think that I hate you?" He whispered against her skin and waited for her to answer. Meera cleared her throat and placed her hands on his chest.

She pulled away a bit and stared into his beautiful black eyes which for the first time in years had so many emotions swirling in them."I don't know Veer! I don't know anything anymore. You um you're so hard to figure out. One second you're so close to me and the next you'll be so far away that I can't even reach you! What should I think? You tell me?"

Veer closed his eyes as the intensity of Meera's words hit him. She was right, he had been playing with her feelings for the past few days and most of all had ignored her completely for the past few years. That would leave anyone confused.

"You're right I'm sorry for doing what I did! I had no right to touch you that way. It was stupid of me. I don't know what's been going on with me but l swear I'll never do that ever again. I'll keep my distance. I stay away from you!" Meera wanted to interrupt but he held his hand indicating that he wasn't finished.

"I have been a mess ever since Sister Brenda passed away maybe that's why I craved support from you but it's better if we stay away from each other. I'm sorry." Veer muttered and kissed her forehead. Meera was going to ask him what had happened to him all those years ago but Veer being Veer went away from there after apologizing and assuring her that he will stay away from her when all she wanted was the complete opposite.

Meera sighed now she was alone on the terrace. For some reason, for the first time in years, she felt hopeful. She knew that her old Veer was somewhere inside.

All she had to do was find the right moment to get him back. Sheena was right she hadn't fought for Veer hard enough. She will from now on. She will bring him back as soon as possible.

Her Veer wasn't lost yet, he was still there. The real question was if she was ready to endure all the pain again in case a repeat of what happened in the past comes up once again? The answer came to her almost instantly.

She could do anything for Veer even if it meant dying. She laughed as tears fell from her eyes. She hadn't felt this hopeful in seven years. Veer Gupta get ready for what's about to come your way. On the other hand, Veer had angry tears in his eyes as he punched the wall in his room.
