I swallowed hard. I was still trying to process what he had just said. Marriage? Was I ready for something like that? I was almost 30 years old and I have a 4 year old child. Hell, Mingus was just like another one of my children. I couldn't believe he was almost 19.
"Babe," Norman whispered quietly. I shifted a little so I could look at him. His forehead connected with mine gently. "I need you to say something. Anything, at this point," he whispered. I didn't know how long I had been sitting there quietly, but I knew that it had to have him slightly worried.
I reached up and placed my hand on his cheek lightly. Norman leaned into my hand before turning his head to the side and kissing my palm. "Yes," I whispered quietly while running my free hand through his hair. Norman pulled back abruptly with a smile on his face.
"Yes?" he almost questioned. I chuckled and pulled him back towards me. "Yes, absolutely yes," I said before connecting his lips to mine. I could feel Norman smiling as he wrapped his arms around my waist and tried to pull me closer to him. Brynlee shifting caused us to pull back.
She yawned and snuggled into Norman's side. Norman brushed some of her out of her face before looking up at me. He kissed me quick one more time before sliding out of bed. He quickly slipped on his shoes and headed out of the bedroom. I felt my eyebrows come together in confusion.
I quietly moved out of the bed hoping not to disturb Brynlee. She stirred a little but stayed asleep. I went out into the living room to see Mingus had a huge smile on his face. He instantly wrapped his arms around me and pulled me in for a hug. I could see Norman looking at us with a smile on his face.
I pulled back from Mingus and I could tell that my face mirrored his. We were both having a hard time wiping the smiles off our faces. We both looked over at Norman who was still grinning from ear to ear. I took a couple steps towards him then he took a couple towards me. "Let's go get married."
~~
And getting married is what we did. We had all but ran to the New York City court house. We didn't need a huge church with cathedral ceilings. We didn't need Norman in a suit, me in a big white dress, with Mingus being the best man, and Brynlee being the flower girl. We didn't need any of that. We just needed each other.
"By the power vested in me by the state of New York, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."
"What are you thinking about?" Norman asked me as we were walking down the streets of New York. I looked up at him with a smile on my face. "Oh I don't know, husband. What are you thinking about?" I asked him in return. Norman smiled wide.
"I'm thinking about how good you look right now, wife," I couldn't help but chuckle. Norman wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me into him as we stopped in the local breakfast dinner. I couldn't help but smile at the older waitress behind the counter.
She was the one that was there for me the night I figured out I was pregnant and didn't know how to tell Norman and now look, him and I couldn't be anymore happier. We went and sat down in a booth in the back. A few minutes later the older waitress brought us food.
"It's on the house today. I can tell by the looks on your faces that this is a celebration," she said with a small smile and walked away. Norman and I both smiled at each other before digging into our breakfast. I looked over at the waitress who winked at me.
It didn't take us long to finish our breakfast and soon we were standing up to head towards the door. Norman fingers laced with mine. I tugged on his hand and stopped him. "Just a second," I said quietly while squeezing his hand before releasing it.
Norman's eyebrows pulled together in confusion but I gave him a reassuring smile before walking over to the counter. The older waitress walked over to me with a smile on her face. "What can I do for you?" she asked me sweetly. I couldn't help but smile at how welcoming she always was.
"I've been coming in here for years and I don't think I've ever caught your name," I told her. Her smile grew a little bit more. "Angel," she said. I felt my eyes grow a little bit. "It's nice to finally meet you, Angel," I said. She patted my hand. "You too, Mrs. Reedus."
I gave her one smaller smile before trotting after Norman who was now standing by the door. His hand wrapped around mine as he pulled me into the cool New York air. "I love you," Norman whispered as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me into him.
It didn't take us long to get back to our apartment. When we walked in Mingus was sitting on the couch with Brynlee in his lap snuggled into his chest still steadily sleeping. I was confused though because we had left her in the bed for her nap. I arched an eyebrow at Mingus.
"She had a nightmare," he whispered while running a hand through her hair. I gave him a small smile before Norman started dragging me towards the bedroom. I let out a small chuckle as Norman shut the door. I plopped down on the edge of the bed.
Norman chuckled as I let my legs swing back and forth. I loved that our bed was taller. It made me feel like a kid again. Norman went to our walk in closet. I felt my eyebrows pull together in confusion. I had no clue what he was doing. I watched as he came out with our suitcases.
They were still full of our dirty clothes from going to Los Angeles for The Walking Dead premiere. "What are you doing?" I asked him. Norman unzipped our suitcases. At first I thought he was looking for one of his shirts that he wore while we were there.
I felt my eyes become wide and I couldn't hold back the giggle that escaped my throat when Norman dumped the suitcase upside down and all the contents fell out. "What are you doing?" I asked him again. Norman placed the now empty suitcases by our closest door.
Norman started tossing clothes out of the closet. I giggled again and pushed myself off the bed. I started picking up clothes and setting them on the bed. "Norman," I said. He popped his head out of the closet with a goofy grin on his face. "What?" he asked.
I couldn't help but chuckle. "What are you doing?" I asked him. Norman walked past me and started putting the clothes in the suitcases. "I told Mingus before we left to call and rent a car and condo," Norman said. I felt my eyebrows pull together in confusion even more.
"Car? Condo? For what?" I asked him. Norman gave me a small smile. "You didn't think I would marry you without a honeymoon, did you?" he said. I felt a smile form on my face. I ran across our room and jumped in Norman's arms causing him to fall back on the bed.
"Really?! Where are we going?" I asked him. Norman chuckled and placed his hands on my lower back. "I figured we would drive down to Florida and spend the week in a condo," Norman said. I felt the smile falter on my face slightly. By the look in Norman's eyes I could tell he noticed it too.
"What's wrong?" he asked me while reaching up and placing his hand on my cheek. I leaned into his hand and gave him a small smile. "As much as I would love to go. I don't know if I can leave the kids for another week. I miss them too much and it isn't fair to Mingus to always have to watch Brynlee," I said.
Norman gave me a reassuring smile. "I thought you would say that. That's why I don't mind going as a family," he said. I leaned down and kissed him quickly before jumping off the bed and grabbing the clothes that he had threw out of the closet.
I quickly threw them in the suitcase. Norman chuckled and started grabbing more clothes while I opened the bedroom door. Mingus and Brynlee were both standing on the other side of the door with grins on their faces. "I already have our suitcases packed," Mingus said. I couldn't help but chuckle before turning around and continuing to help Norman.
