I couldn't believe I turned 29 today. I was getting so close to 30. Man, I felt like I was getting old and Brynlee was growing up way too fast. I sighed and rolled over softly colliding with Norman. I wish we could just lay in bed all day and not do anything.
"Happy birthday, beautiful," Norman whispered with his eyes still closed as I draped my arm over his waist. I smiled and snuggled into his side while burying my head in his chest. Norman's arm wrapped around my shoulder and pulled me into him more.
"Happy birthday to you too, babe," I said softly. Since Norman and mine's birthday was two days apart his being the 6th and mine the 8th we decided to meet in the middle and celebrate both of our birthdays on the 7th. It was just easier on the both of us.
"You don't think Mingus could just handle Brynlee for the day and let us lay in here, do you?" I asked Norman. His chuckles vibrated my chest as he rubbed his hand up and down my arm and kissed my forehead. I sighed and closed my eyes again.
"As lovely as that sounds I don't think that will happen," Norman said. I chuckled. "Hey a girl can dream, can't she?" I asked him rhetorically. Norman chuckled again. "Well at least we can lay in here until they get up," Norman said and I nodded.
I looked at the alarm clock that was on the nightstand on Norman's side. It was almost ten in the morning and I was a little shocked that we hadn't heard Brynlee or Mingus yet but definitely Brynlee. She usually didn't sleep past nine. Maybe this was a good sign.
"Don't start wondering why she hasn't cried for one of us yet or you'll do some sort of mind thing and she'll be waking up in the next few minutes," Norman said. I felt a smile creep across my face. He was so weird sometimes and sometimes I didn't know where he got some of the things he said.
I sighed and snuggled into his side some more and let our legs tangle together. "I love you," Norman whispered into my hair causing my smile to grow. "And I love you," I whispered back as he kissed me lightly on the forehead. Suddenly a smell tingled my sense.
"What is that?" I asked sitting up a little now curious. I looked back at Norman who shrugged his shoulders and sat up too. We both got out of bed and headed for the door. "I'll go get Brynlee," I said. Norman nodded and headed for the living room.
When I walked in Brynlee's room it was quiet. I looked in her crib to see that she wasn't there. I felt my heart beat pick up a little. Sure she was crawling but I wouldn't think that she could get out of her crib. I quickly walked through the apartment.
"Norman, do you have," I entered the living room right as he looked up at me with Brynlee babbling in his arms. I let out a soft breath. "Brynlee," I said softly. "Yeah, Mingus brought her out here. That's why we never heard her this morning," Norman said.
"Mingus?" I questioned him. I wasn't expecting him to be up. "Yeah, Mingus. You know the good looking older brother," I smiled as Mingus said that while walking into the room. He walked over to me and handed me a cup of coffee. I gladly accepted it.
"I'm making breakfast," he said before turning on his heel and walking back into the kitchen. I looked over at Norman. I could feel the amusement on my face as I cocked an eyebrow questioning the whole situation. "Who is he and what did he do with kid Mingus?" I asked.
Norman chuckled as I came over and sat beside him. "He's growing up, babe. They both are," he said while glancing over at the kitchen where we could see Mingus's back to us. I sighed and leaned my head against his shoulder as he laid his head on top of mine.
Brynlee was still babbling away in Norman's lap and I couldn't help but smile at her which caused her to let out a high pitched giggle. I grabbed her gently by her chin to see that she had another tooth coming in. I couldn't believe that it wasn't bothering her anymore.
This would make her second tooth coming in since Thanksgiving and they were coming in quickly. "Breakfast is ready," Mingus said while popping his head into the living room. I stood up and grabbed Brynlee from Norman's lap which made her squeal and then pout.
She reached for Norman as he stood up and I huffed before handing her back over to him. "Such a daddy's girl," I grumbled. Norman chuckled and wrapped his arm around me. "It's okay I still love you," he whispered in my ear causing me to smile.
Norman pulled me back slightly before we entered the kitchen. "And you know, you could always be a daddy's girl too," he whispered huskily in my ear. I felt my whole face and neck go red as Norman chuckled and kissed my cheek. I nudged him lightly in the stomach and gave him a stern look.
"Children," I reminded him. Norman stuck his tongue out at me causing Brynlee to do the same. You could definitely tell that she was Norman's child. Norman placed her in her high chair which caused her to whine some more and reach out for Norman again.
Norman rubbed his hand softly over her head before bending down and kissing her lightly on the forehead. "I'm right here, Sweetheart," he said softly. Brynlee stared up at him with awe struck eyes as she reached out and placed her hand gently on his cheek.
Norman smiled and turned his head to kiss her tiny pudgy palm. Brynlee giggled before pulling her hand back and sticking her fist in her mouth. Norman stood up straight as Mingus started placing plates full of food on the table. The kid really had been busy.
Pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, and orange juice. I looked up at Norman who was smiling over at Mingus. "You need to cook more often," I said now seeing that he was capable of cooking when he wanted too. Mingus smiled over at me before sticking out his tongue.
We all sat down at the table and dished out food on our plates in silence. It was quiet between us except for the scraping of our forks and Brynlee occasionally whining and leaning towards us with an open mouth. I knew she wanted some of what we were eating.
Norman grabbed a pancake and broke it up into tiny piece and let it sit for a few minutes. After it cooled off he set it on Brynlee's tray that was in front of her. Brynlee grabbed a piece and plopped it in her mouth without any hesitation. She squealed with her mouth still full.
"God now she'll never eat baby food again," I said as I continued to eat. Norman gave me a small smile but shrugged. "A little bit every once in a while won't kill her. It will just tide her over until she has enough teeth to eat harder food," he said while tickling Brynlee's cheek.
I rolled my eyes playfully. He was so knowledgeable about babies and I knew it was because of Mingus but I found it cute. Mingus quietly sat across from us and I looked up and him with a smile. "Thank you for all of this," I said gesturing to the table with my fork.
Mingus returned my smile. "You're welcome. I figured you guys could use a break," he said. Norman's arm slipped around my waist and he gave me a gentle squeeze before removing his arm. After breakfast Mingus even volunteered to clean up but we wouldn't let him.
Norman and I put everything away and did the dishes together before we joined Mingus and Brynlee in the living room. Both of them were laying in the floor playing with some of Brynlee's toys. I felt a smile ghost across my face as Norman joined them in the floor.
Mingus got off the floor and came to sit beside me. We both watched as Norman laid on his back and lifted Brynlee up in the air above his head. "He's happy with you, ya know," Mingus said softly. I slowly looked over at him and cocked an eyebrow.
"Is that what they call it now a days?" I asked him teasingly. Mingus cracked a small smile. "I'm being serious. I can see it in his eyes and everything. He really is happy with you," he said. I felt my smile grow a little. "I'm happy with him too," I said softly hoping to not draw attention to our conversation.
Mingus looked over at me and his eyes connected with mine. "I'm glad he has someone like you. Someone to make him happy. He needs that and someone to grow old with," I shoved Mingus gently with my shoulder causing him to chuckle lightly.
"I am not old," I told him while glaring at him playfully. Mingus chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm gonna go shower," he said and I nodded as he got up and stepped over Norman and Brynlee to head to the bathroom. I looked down and Norman and Brynlee.
Norman looked up at me with a small smile and I couldn't help but return it. He truly did make me happy but what really made me happy was the way he treated Brynlee and Mingus. "I love you," Norman mouthed to me. I smiled wider. "I love you too," I mouthed back before he turned his attention back to Brynlee.
