I woke up the next morning to another light knock on my door. I rose up and yawned. "Come in," I said. Once again my mother's head popped through my door. "Norman's not here for another surprise visit, is he?" I asked while going to get out of bed.
My mom chuckled. "No, but I do need a favor," she said. I stood up and stretched a little before starting to dig through my bag for some clothes. "What's that?" I asked while pulling out a shirt. I heard a crinkle of paper and I looked up to see her handing it towards me.
"We're having a party tonight with our church family," I tried stopping myself from rolling my eyes. "And?" I asked her while taking the paper from her hand and unfolding it. It was a grocery list and I sighed. "Can you run out and get these things? I would but I need to stay here and clean."
I chewed on my lip before nodding. "Yeah, I'll go get in the shower," I said. My mother smiled and kissed my cheek before leaving my room and shutting the door behind her. I grabbed my phone and looked to see it was 11 in the morning. I might as well drag Lyndi along with me.
I clicked on her name and listened to the ringing waiting on her to pick up. "Hello?" I heard her groggy voice. I chuckled. "Oh goodie you're awake. Go get in the shower and get dressed," I said. I heard her yawn. "Why do I need to get up?" she asked me.
I took my clothes into the conjoining bathroom. I placed my clothes on the counter before leaning against it. "I need to go to the store for my mom and I want you to go with me," I said. I heard her sigh then her covers being pushed back. "You're lucky I love you," she mumbled.
I chuckled again. "I'll see you in an hour," I said hanging up. I clicked over to my music and let Sonic Youth fill the small bathroom. I stripped of my clothing and got in the shower. I quickly showered and got out wrapping a fluffy towel around my body.
I still had about 45 minutes left well technically it was 30 because I had to go get Lyndi. I slid on a pair of jeans and a Circle Jerks shirt before letting my hair fall from the towel on top of my head. I quickly blow dried my hair before applying makeup and sliding on my glasses.
When I grabbed my shoes I knew I needed to leave soon. I tucked the grocery list in my back pocket and grabbed my phone. I ran down the stairs to see my parents sitting at the kitchen table. I grabbed my sunglasses and keys before kissing both of them on the cheek.
"I'll be back in a bit. Do you guys need anything else that's not on the list?" I asked. They both shook their heads and I headed out the door. I jumped in my jeep and cranked up the music while driving to Lyndi's. For some reason it didn't seem to take that long to get there.
I beeped my horn not making an effort to get out and not even a minute later Lyndi came trotting down her front steps. "Afternoon," I said when she jumped in the car. Lyndi let her head flop back against the seat. "How dare you wake me up so early," she said.
I chuckled and pulled out of the driveway heading towards the store. Lyndi and I listened to music the whole way there letting the warm Georgia breeze run through our hair. I sighed once we turned into the parking lot of the grocery store and found a spot close to the front.
"So what do you need?" Lyndi asked me. I pulled out the list and looked at it. "Man, I haven't been to this store in forever. I have no clue," I said while tossing the list at her. Lyndi looked at it before opening her door. "This will be easy come on," she said.

I was now sitting out back smoking a cigarette much to my mother's dismay. She didn't really like that I had picked up the habit of smoking but little did she know I had been doing it for quite some time. I stamped out my cigarette with my shoe and walked back into the house.
"What time should everybody be getting here?" I asked my mother. She turned around from whatever she was making. "They should be here in about 15 minutes," I nodded. "Alright, I'm going to freshen up a bit," I said while going up the stairs.
I quickly straightened my hair and refreshed my makeup. By the time I made it back downstairs there were already people in the back yard. I smiled to the people that looked my way as I walked down the back steps. I was really good in social situations.
I said hi to a few people before spotting a couple familiar faces in the crowd, Shawn and James. I quickly walked over to them. "Thank God, I'm not alone," I said while going to hug both of them. They both chuckled while engulfing me in hugs.
"This is ridiculous. Seems like ever since I got down here all my mom wants to do is bring a bunch of people over," I said. They both cracked smiles. "Well nobody gets to see you anymore!" Shawn said and James nodded in agreement. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair.
"I know, but I have a life to live on my own now," they both nodded. I heard wheels crunching on the gravel driveway and I cocked my head to the side. "I'll be right back," I said to the boys and excused myself to walk around to the front of the house.
I smiled when I saw that familiar white truck coming down the driveway and it stopped it front of me. "Y'all having another party?" Norman asked me while propping his arm up on the open window. "Something like that," I said while placing my hand on his arm.
He smirked a little and gestured towards the group. "Who are they?" he asked. I ran my thumb in lazy circles across his arm and I watched slight goose bumps appear. "Church friends of my parents. I don't really remember all of them, but they remember me," I said.
I rested my head on Norman's arm as he sighed. "That would freak me out. All these people knowing things about me and I don't even remember who they are," he said. I snorted. "Right, that's how I feel," I said. Norman brought up his other hand and ran it through my hair.
"You think you can get away for a bit?" he asked. I removed my head from his arm and looked back at the party. I couldn't see my parents from where I was standing but I could see Shawn and James staring at me. I smiled and looked back at Norman.
"What do you have in mind?" I asked him. He nodded his head towards his passenger door. "Get in," he said. I stole one last glance at Shawn and James who I could tell looked slightly confused. I gave them a small wave before jumping in Norman's truck.
He smirked before turning his truck around and driving down the driveway out to the main road. "Where are we going?" I asked him and he chuckled. "Nowhere," I cocked an eyebrow at him. "What do you mean?" I asked him. I watched as a smile danced across his face.
"Grab that bag under the seat and open it," he said. I didn't ask questions I just did what he said. I grabbed the grocery bag from under the seat and opened it up. I chuckled when I saw what he had bought. Inside the bag were about 15 bags of Sour Patch Kids.
I scooted over and kissed him on the cheek as he turned down a back road. I felt a smile creep across my face as he hit a button and music from his radio filled the air. I scooted back over and rolled down the window before propping my feet up on the dashboard.
I let the wind flip through my hair as the music blasted through the speakers. It was quiet between Norman and I but I loved it. "Now and then I think of when we were together. Like when you said you felt so happy you could die," Norman and I both groaned at the same time.
We both reached for the dial of the radio at the same time. I chuckled and pulled my hand back. "I hate that song," Norman grumbled while tuning the radio to another station. "Ah, here we go," he said while pulling his hand away from the dial and resting it back on the wheel.
"She's a good girl loves her mama," I smiled at this song letting the lyrics run through my head as I tapped my foot to the beat. "There's a freeway runnin' through the yard. I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her. I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart," Tom Petty sang.
"AND I'M FREE! FREE FALLING!" my head snapped to the left to see Norman hanging his head out the window and screaming the chorus at the top of his lungs. I couldn't hold back the laugh that escaped my lips. Norman looked back at me. "What? It's a good song."
I rolled my eyes and watched as he pulled off to the side of the road. We were definitely in the middle of nowhere though I trusted that he knew where he was. "Come on," Norman said while shutting off his truck then opening the door to get out.
I followed him to the back as he let down the tailgate and hopped up to sit on it. I looked up at the sky to see the sun had set and the stars were out. "Tonight's supposed to be the clearest night of the year," I said while hopping up beside Norman.
I watched as Norman grabbed a couple blankets and spread them out in the back of the bed of the truck before falling back on them. He motioned for me to follow him. I crawled back and sat beside him. "Oh yeah and how do you know that?" he asked me.
"I took an astronomy class in college. I needed an elective and thought it would be interesting. I always wanted to learn the constellations," I said. Norman put on a thinking face. I laid down beside him. "So, what's that one over there?" he asked pointing at the sky.
I turned toward him and pressed my cheek to his. His scent instantly filled my nose causing me to breathe in deeply and close my eyes. I opened them a second later. "That one there?" I rolled back a little. "That is Bootes, the farmer," I said while getting more comfortable.
"And that one over there?" again I moved closer to see where he was pointing. "Ah, Andromeda. That one has a good story," I said. "Oh yeah? Well let's hear it," Norman said while propping an arm behind his head. I racked my brain for the story.
"Alright, here it goes. They said that Andromeda's mother, Queen Cassiopeia, was very vain. She could often be heard saying that she was prettier than all the sea nymphs. The nymphs of course didn't like this and they complained to Poseidon," I looked over to see Norman in deep thought. I couldn't tell if he was lost or not. "Go on."
I smiled a little. "He, Poseidon, in turn sent a monster to destroy her land. The King and Queen were told that in order to save their country, Andromeda must be sacrificed. They had two weeks to decide. So the day came and the King ordered his daughter to be chained to a cliff, to be sacrificed to the monster," I looked back at Norman who had rolled his bottom lip into his mouth.
I swallowed hard trying to get crazy thoughts out of my head and continued. "Suddenly there was hope, Perseus, a demi-god, arrived. He rushed back to the city. As the monster was about to eat the princess he pulled on the head and when the monster looked into the eyes of Medusa, it turned to stone and crumbled into the sea."
It was quiet between us. "Norman," I whispered. Then I heard him snort. I sat up to look at him. "What?" I asked him. He chuckled and looked over at me. "You went to college to learn that? That's not a good story. I could tell you a better story than that," he said.
"Oh yeah?" I asked him while pulling my thin jacket around me a little tighter. Even though it was Georgia and we were in the south the nights still seemed to get pretty cool. "Come here," Norman said moving his arm for me to lay down next to him.
"Come stay warm and I'll tell you a story," I rolled over onto my side and laid my head on his chest. Norman wrapped his arm around me. "Well, let's see," he said while brushing my hair back out of my face. "A good story, huh?" I rolled my eyes. "That's what you said."
"Hmm, okay I got one," he started. "There once were three little pigs, whose mother sent them out into the world to make their fortunes. They each built their own house. The first little pig built a house that was made of straw," I started chuckling at this point.
"What? Have you heard this one before?" Norman asked me. I chuckled again. "Maybe once or twice," I said causing Norman to laugh. "Well see? That means that my story was better. The better the story, the more people have heard it," he said.
"Really? It couldn't be that my story was a couple hundred years older, could it?" I asked him. Norman chuckled. "Nope," he said. We laid quietly for a while. Norman started playing with my hair. Suddenly a laugh came rumbling from my chest.
"What?" Norman asked me. I sat up so I could look at him. "You are such a dork," I said. Norman rolled his eyes and leaned up to kiss. I met him halfway and felt myself smile when our lips touched. I pulled back and laid my head back on his chest.
"We should really head back. It's getting late," Norman whispered. I nodded against his chest but neither of us made an effort to move. Finally I pulled myself away from him. "Alright let's go. My parents are probably already mad because I snuck away."
Norman and I both jumped down from the tailgate and shut it. I stopped Norman from walking around to his side of the truck by grabbing his shirt. He looked down at me as I let my hands splay across his stomach. Norman smiled a little as his hand came up to rest at the base of my neck.
"Thank you, for all this I mean," I said. Norman bent down and kissed me one more time before pulling back. "You're welcome. It was fun," he said. I nodded and stepped back from his to go to the passenger side. I sighed as I slid in the cool interior. Norman gave me one last smile before starting his truck and heading back towards my parent's house.
