The next morning I woke up and I was extremely tired. I felt like my eyes wouldn't open at all. I slid my glasses on and everything became clear. I ran a hand through my hair and yawned. I stretched and looked over at my clock. My eyes became wide at the time.
It was 1:30! I had to pick Mingus up in an hour and a half and it was a good 15 minute walk from my apartment. I quickly jumped out of the bed and ran into the bathroom quickly jumping into the shower. I don't think I had ever moved this fast in my life.
After about a five minute shower I jumped out and got dressed. I checked the weather and it wasn't bad outside. Thankfully spring was coming around soon. I quickly blow dried my hair. I looked at the clock to see it was 2:15. I knew I didn't have time to do my hair.
I applied a thin layer of makeup before throwing my hair in a messy bun. I slid in my contacts. After looking in the mirror one more time I decided I looked fine. I sighed and grabbed my bag, sunglasses, and phone. I looked at my phone to see the time. I needed to leave now.
I quickly dashed out the door and down the elevator. I was instantly greeted by the cool New York winter air. It felt nice. I slid my sunglasses on and started towards Mingus's school. My phone vibrated and I looked down to see I had five texts. Two from Stacey, a group message from Stacey and Morgan, and one from Norman.
I opened the group message first.
I cocked an eyebrow at what I had received. There were a bunch of links to random things. I didn't even bother clicking on them. They had a habit of sending me links that would have freaky shit on them and I'd end up jumping from it scaring me.
"What did you send me?" I typed back.
I clicked over to the messages from Stacey. "Hi babe!!" was the first one. The second one was a very sexy picture of Norman. Damn he looked good. I sighed and texted Stacey back quickly.
"You have no right to send me shit like that! :P" I finally clicked over to the message from Norman instantly smiling before I even opened it. "Hey babe, thanks again for picking Mingus up. He has a key so you guys can go back and hang out there. Don't make any plans. I'm making dinner. xx."
I could feel my smile become wider. "It's seriously no problem! I love hanging with Mingus! Wait, you're making dinner....?" I was now at Mingus's school. I had about five minutes before he was let out. I leaned against the wall waiting for him when my phone vibrated again.
Both Stacey and Norman had texted me back. "Not a right a privilege ;)" Stacey texted back. I rolled my eyes and clicked over to Norman. "Yes? Ask Mingus. I can cook!" I chuckled a little at him defending himself. "Fine, I will!" right when I hit send children started pouring out of the doors.
I pushed myself off the wall and watched for Mingus. I finally spotted his blonde head walking out of the doors and hopping down the stairs. He walked over to me with a bright smile on his face. "Mandy! " he said when he was close enough. I smiled at him.
"Mingus! What's up buddy?" I said while ruffling his hair. Mingus stuck his tongue out at me as we made our way back to the apartments. I slung an arm around Mingus as we walked across the street. "Do you have your house key?" I asked him.
Mingus shook a pair of keys out in front of him causing me to chuckle. "Your dad's making dinner tonight," I told him. Mingus looked up at me. "Dad's making dinner?" he asked. I nodded. "Yeah, is that a problem?" Mingus shook his head. "No, dad's an amazing cook."
It made me feel a little better. We had quickly made it back to Norman's apartment and Mingus opened the door. He walked into the kitchen and dropped his back on the counter. "Do you have homework?" I asked him. He grumbled and nodded his head.
"How about this, I'll help you get your homework and then we'll do something fun to wait on your dad," I said. Mingus cocked an eyebrow but nodded. He hopped up on a barstool and opened his backpack. "I'll be right back," I said and he waved a hand in my direction.
I walked down the hallway to the bathroom. I flipped on the light and automatically jumped. "Shit!" I practically screamed. I heard Mingus's feet coming towards me. "Are you okay?" he asked as he approached me. He pushed past me a little.
"Where did that come from?" I asked him while pointing at the black fat cat that was just chilling on the bathroom sink. Mingus chuckled and grabbed the cat placing him on the ground. "You've never seen Eye In The Dark before?" he asked me.
"Who in the what?" I asked in return. Mingus cracked a smile. "Eye In The Dark. That's his name," my eyebrows came together. "Did you name him?" Mingus nodded and turned to follow the cat down the hall. I closed the bathroom door behind me.
I was trying to process how I had never noticed their cat before. I mean I wasn't over here that much but you figure a cat wouldn't be hard to spot, especially a fat black cat. I walked out of the bathroom and found Eye sitting outside of the door. I bent down and scratched his ears.
"Silly kitty," I said while walking past him and back to where Mingus was. I felt Eye brushing against my legs as I walked. Mingus was hunched over a book while writing furiously across a piece of paper. His tongue was sticking out of the side of his mouth while he wrote.
I hopped up beside him. "What are you working on?" I asked. His slid his paper towards me along with the book. "Math, will you make sure it's right?" he asked. I quickly looked over his work and compared it to the book. "It all looks right," I said and pushed the paper back towards him.
He closed the paper inside his book and slid it into his backpack. "Is that it?" I asked him. Mingus nodded and hopped off the stool and went over to the fridge. He pulled out a couple cans of coke and handed one to me. "So now what?" I asked him. Mingus smiled. "To my room."
Mingus's room was not the typical 13 year olds room. There were squirrels, crossbows, and little Daryl figures everywhere. I didn't really notice it the first time I was in Mingus's room. He looked back at me and motioned for me to follow him. He opened his window and climbed out.
He motioned for me again and I followed after him. I was greeted by the cool New York air. We were on a small balcony that overlooked New York. The kid definitely had a pretty good view! I sighed and leaned on the banister.
"This is cool," I said while looking over at Mingus.
He smiled and faced me. "I like it up here," he said. I smiled and slung an arm around his shoulder while ruffling his hair. Mingus glared up at me while he fixed his hair causing me to chuckle.
It was pretty silent between us. We were both just looking out over New York even Eye was sitting in the window enjoying it. "My dad really likes you," Mingus said breaking the silence. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye. "Where did that come from?" I asked him.
Mingus shrugged. "I don't know but it's the truth. You make him happy," Mingus said. I smiled and squeezed him a little. "Thanks buddy," he smiled up at me. "I like you too," I chuckled. "Well I'd hope so. I can't have Mingus insert middle name here Reedus not liking me."
Mingus smiled. "Lucien," he stated. I cocked an eyebrow at him. "Uh, what?" I asked him. His smile widened. "Mingus Lucien Reedus," he said. I sat there for a second thinking about it. His name was definitely unique that was for sure and it definitely suited him.
I smiled at him. "Definitely an awesome name," I said. Mingus stuck his tongue out at me. I heard a door slam and I looked over at the window. "I think dad's home," Mingus said. I nodded and Mingus slipped through the window with me following.
Eye jumped down and I shut the window behind me. Mingus and walked out into the kitchen area to see Norman unpacking a bunch of different things. He stopped when he noticed Mingus and I and he slid off his sunglasses. I jumped up on a barstool.
Mingus walked around the counter and hugged his dad. I smiled a little at the cute moment. Mingus stepped back and came around to sit beside me. Norman looked over at me with an amused look. "Hi babe," he said. I'm glad I was sitting because his voice made you want to melt.
I smiled at him. "Hi," I got out my voice cracking a little from feeling slightly nervous. Norman cracked a smile and walked around the counter until he was behind me. I felt his hands on the back of my chair and he turned it around in one quick motion.
I was met by his blue eyes. He smirked. "Hi babe," he repeated again. I felt my cheeks become hot at how close he was. Norman chuckled a little. "Hi," I said again this time my voice was barely a whisper. He knew the kind of effect he had on me.
Norman looked over at Mingus, who looked over at him in return. Norman reached out and covered Mingus's eyes. Mingus pulled back and glared at Norman causing me to chuckle. Norman kissed my cheek before walking back around the counter and continued unpacking groceries.
"Mingus did you get your homework done?" Norman asked. Mingus shifted uncomfortably before answering. "Yes," he grumbled, such a typical kid. "All of it?" Norman asked without turning around to look at him. "Yes," Mingus spoke up this time.
"What subjects?" Norman asked. Jeez, this kid was getting the third degree right now. "Just one, math," Mingus said. Norman turned around and looked at him. "Did you get it all right?" he asked. Mingus sighed and nodded. Norman looked over at me and cocked an eyebrow.
I nodded too. "I checked it. It was all right," I said. Norman smiled a little and turned back around. Mingus looked over at me and I winked back at him. I remember my parents always asking me about school and I absolutely hated it. I hopped off the barstool and walked around the counter.
"What are you making?" I asked while peering over his shoulder. Norman turned his head to look at me and kissed my cheek. "I'm not really sure," he said while scratching his head. I chuckled and wrapped my around his waist and stood on my tiptoes.
"Want my help?" I whispered in his ear. I saw the smile creep across his face. "I don't think we'd get any cooking done if you helped me," he said huskily. I chuckled a little and unwrapped my arms from him. "Yeah, you're probably right," I said. I went and sat back down.
Mingus was resting his head on his arms on the counter looking pretty tired. I started running a hand through his hand and he sighed with a slight smile on his face. Norman looked over at us and smiled a little before turning back to whatever he was doing.
It was quiet between all of us. I'm pretty sure Mingus was asleep and Norman was in his own little world. I watched Norman's back as he bounced back and forth on his feet while whistling. I smiled a little as he continued doing whatever he was doing. Whatever was coming from the oven smelled really good. Suddenly there was a slight clatter of something hitting the counter. Mingus's head shot up. "Son of a bitch!"
Mingus and I looked at each other and both of our eyebrows arched. Norman turned around holding his right hand in his left hand. I saw the blood on his fingers. I quickly jumped down and ran around the counter. Mingus jumped down and took off down the hallway.
I quickly turned on the cold water and Norman ran his hand under it. "What did you do?!" I asked him. He washed the blood off his hands cursing under his breath. "The knife slipped and cut my finger," I sighed while grabbed a couple paper towels and handing them to him.
Mingus came in with a small first aid kit and sat it on the counter. I opened it up and grabbed a couple band aids. Norman removed the paper towels and I quickly covered the cut with the band aids. I threw everything away and leaned against the counter.
Norman was staring intently at his finger and bending it. I chuckled lightly. "It's still attached I promise," Norman glared playfully at me. "It stings," he said. I shook my head and rolled my eyes at him. "Well, it's going too. Just don't mess with it," I said.
Norman stuck his tongue out at me. "Yes mom," I smacked his chest and we both laughed at Mingus who had a confused look on his face. Norman turned around and started pulling plates and silverware out of the drawers and cabinets behind him.
I watched as he pulled them out. None of his plates matched and each one had a different picture of something crazy on them. I felt a smile creep on my face. "Mingus go set the table. Dinner's almost ready," Norman said while pushing everything towards Mingus.
I smiled at Mingus as he walked out of the room. I felt Norman press me against the counter and his hands found my hips. He turned me around to face him and right when I did his lips connected with mine. My arms wrapped around his neck as he pulled me into him.
I ran my hands through his hair and groaned as he pulled back. "I've been wanting to do that all day," Norman said. I chuckled. "Tease, then why'd you stop?" I said while standing on my tiptoes to get closer to him. "Last time I checked you said you were going to pay me in kisses."
Norman groaned as his hands made their way to my lower back and pressed me into him as close as possible. "Now who's the tease?" he mumbled against my lips before connecting them again, this time shorter. I sighed and glared at him. "Still you," I said.
Norman chuckled. He bent down to my ear. "I will pay you later," he growled in my ear. I felt the shivers go up my spine. "I don't want to scar Mingus for life," he whispered. I felt like putty in his hands and I just wanted to melt into him. Damn the things he could do to me.
Norman released me quickly and I sighed while leaning against the counter again. He smiled at me a little before bending down and opening the oven. My mouth was practically watering at the smell. Maybe he could cook. Mingus came back in before grabbing a pitcher of water and glasses and walking back out. Norman grabbed some of the dishes and handed them to me. He grabbed the others and we headed to the dining room.
~~
We were now sitting in the living room. Norman and I were curled up on the couch while Mingus played video games. My phone rang and I shifted a little in Norman's arms to grab it. "Hello?" I answered. I was instantly met by a scream and I pulled the phone away from my ear. Norman cocked an eyebrow at me and I smiled a little I knew exactly who it was and I knew exactly why she was screaming.
It was quiet on the other end of the phone by the time I put it back to her ear. "Hi Stacey," I said. "I love you! I love you! I love you! I love you! I fucking love you!!" I chuckled a little. "You're welcome! You're welcome! You're wel- yeah I'm not doing that," I said.
Stacey chuckled right now. "I'm packing right now as we speak!" she said. I smiled. "I'm excited for you to visit! It will be nice having you here!" I heard Stacey shutting drawers as we continued to talk. She sighed dreamily. "Okay Stacey, what aren't you telling me?"
She sighed again. "Will Norman be around?" she asked. I cracked a slight smile and looked over at Norman who was still looking at me. He cocked his eyebrow at me again and I shook my head. "Yeah, he should be around. I'll make sure you two are introduced," I said.
Stacey squealed a little. "Did I mention I love you?" she asked. "A few times actually," I said. I watched as Mingus shut off his gaming system and I looked at the time. It was 10 at night. Man the time seems to fly anymore. "Stacey, I'll call you tomorrow and we'll talk more," I said.
"Okay! Thanks again babe!" and then she hung up. I felt the wide smile on my face as I placed my phone down. "Mingus go get ready for bed," Norman said. Mingus stood up and went down the hall. "Who was that?" he asked me. I looked over at him to see he was still staring at me intently.
"A friend of mine who lives in Oregon, I sent her a plane ticket for her birthday. She's coming to stay for a bit," I said. Norman nodded and stood up. "I'll be back," I waved him off knowing he was going to say goodnight to Mingus. He came back not even a minute later.
I felt my eyebrow arch. "Mingus wants you back here too," he said, I stood up and followed Norman. Mingus was lying in his bed under the covers with his hands behind his head. I smiled a little as I leaned up against the wall beside his bed. Mingus looked up at me.
"What's up, kid?" I asked him. He stuck his tongue out at me. "Will you pick me up from school tomorrow?" I looked down at Norman who was kneeling by Mingus's bed. I knew tomorrow was Friday and Mingus was going to Helena's and they always spent time together.
I looked back up at Mingus. "Sorry, bud. I'm gonna let your dad pick you up tomorrow so you guys can spend time together," I said. Mingus's face dropped and I reached out a hand and ruffled his hair. "Awe, darn," he said. I smiled a little. "How about I pick you up on Monday?"
I looked down at Norman who smiled slightly. "Yes!" he said. I chuckled a little. "Alright, it's a date then," Mingus smiled and held his arms out to me. I bent down and gave him a hug. "Goodnight," he said. I pulled back. "Night Mingus," I smiled down at Norman and walked out of the room.
I sat down on the couch and played with my phone as I waited for Norman to come out of Mingus's room. Stacey had texted me a picture of her bags that were packed and by her door. I chuckled a little and texted her back. "You better have packed some warm clothes. It's freezing here!"
I placed my phone on the coffee table in front of me. Eye jumped up beside me and rubbed against me. I scratched him behind his ears. He laid down and rolled onto his back so I could scratch his stomach. I absent mindedly scratched his stomach when Norman came out.
Norman came and sat beside me while throwing an arm around me. "Thank you," he said. I looked over at him. He had his head leaning against the back of the couch. "For what?" I asked. He tilted his head a little to look at me. He pushed his hair back with his hand.
"For giving me the day with Mingus," he said. I shrugged a little. "It's seriously no big deal. He's your son. You're really busy. You guys need to cherish the moments you get together," I said. Norman smirked a little. "And this is why I like you," he said. I chuckled a little.
"That's good to know. I really need to get going," Norman groaned and wrapped both arms around me and pulled me into him. "Don't go," he whined. I pried his arms off of me and stood up. "If I don't go now then you won't want to get up tomorrow which means Mingus won't get up."
Norman sighed and stood up. I walked to the door and opened it but it was closed immediately. Norman pushed me against the door and placed his arms on either side of me so I couldn't move. I looked up at him. He smirked a little before bending down and kissing my neck.
"I think you need to be paid," Norman said against my skin. I smiled a little knowing what he meant by 'paid.' I pushed him lightly away. "How about this? Tomorrow after Mingus leaves you can pay me," Norman leaned in and placed his lips not even an inch from mine.
"That sounds incredibly sexy," he mumbled before connecting our lips. He pulled me away from the door and opening it. He pulled back and pushed me lightly out the door. "Go, before I can't stop myself," Norman said. I leaned up and kissed him one more time before walking back to my apartment. "Goodnight sweetheart," I heard him say as I shut my door.
