I slid the key into my lock for the last time. "No turning back now," I heard my brother Jordan behind me say. I sighed and turned around to see him leaning against the wall with one of my last boxes in his hands. I just rolled my eyes and walked past. He had been begging me for years to move from home and come to New York to live and I finally decided to do it.
We walked down the stairs and I dropped my keys off to my landlord. Jordan slid the last box inside the uhaul and shut the door. I slid into my car and pulled out behind him. I wasn't moving far. From New Jersey to New York, it wasn't that far, but it was still going to be different.
I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself, huh? My name is Amanda. Some people call me Mandy. I'm 26 years young and I love to have a good time. I'm constantly partying and drinking any chance I get. Maybe that's why my brother was moving me in with him, but he honestly has no room to talk seeing as he owns a bar.
My parents really didn't care what I did. I was what you called an "oops." Basically my parents decided they wanted to stop at one child. My brother had started his own life then BAM, along came me. There is a 16 year age difference between us but that didn't stop us from picking on each other and getting on each other's nerves.
This was going to be a long trip I could already feel it. I powered up my ipod and put The Black Angels on. Listening to my music kept me distracted for a little while until someone interrupted it by calling me. I looked down to see it was Chase calling me.
I hit the accept button. "Hello?" I said. "Hey babe," I heard Chase say on the other end. I felt a smile creep across my face. "Hey there," I said. It was silent between us for a second. "I have a surprise for you," he said. I chuckled lightly. "And what would that be?" I asked. This time Chase chuckled. "You'll have to see," he said and then he hung up.
I sighed and hit the play button again and let the music fill my speakers again. If you were wondering, Chase is my boyfriend. We've been dating for three years. He was crushed when I told him I was moving, but it was only a few hours away so I didn't see it as that big of a deal.
Soon we were headed over the bridge and I was automatically greeted by New York traffic. "Damn," I cursed under my breath. It took at least another hour to get through the traffic and soon we had arrived to my brother's apartment. We unpacked all the necessary boxes for the night and I flopped on his couch. I felt the couch shift as he sat down beside me.
"Are you sure about this, bro? I don't want to get in your way," I said. He shook his head. "You won't be in the way. There's a job at my bar if you want it," he said. I smiled. "Awesome." "Speaking of, we need to get ready to head down there. We open at six," I nodded and went to the bathroom to get ready. Before I knew it we were headed to the bar.
"That's weird," Jordan said when he noticed the door unlocked to the bar. He went in before me. I flipped on the lights and practically jumped when I saw Chase standing in the middle of the room. "Damn it, you scared us," I said while walking up to him and putting my arms around me.
He chuckled and kissed me lightly. "Sorry," he said. Soon Jordan had opened the bar and surprisingly I caught on pretty fast. I was mixing drinks and mingling with everyone around me. Chase left because he had to go to work in the morning. Jordan let me take a break so I took a seat on one of the barstools. Right as I was about to get comfortable my phone rang.
I slipped to the side room so I could hear whoever it was over the booming music. "Hello?" I said. "O....M....G GUESS WHAT!" I chuckled lightly. "What Stacey?" I said. "Norman Reedus came home!" I was slightly confused. "You got a boyfriend you didn't tell me about?" I said but then it clicked. "Oh you're talking about that one guy from that TV show you watch."
"The Walking Dead, Mandy," she said dully. I smiled a little. "How exciting," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. I really never understood her obsession with his guy. I never watched the TV show, and I had never seen or heard of him. "Well, as much as I would love to chat I gotta get back to work," I said. I heard the dial tone knowing she had hung up.
I walked back out and I was about to go to the seat where I was sitting when I noticed it was taken by a pair of sunglasses. Okay, so not really a pair of sunglasses, it was a guy who had sunglasses on. I walked back behind the counter watching the guy out of the corner of my eye. I saw Jordan walk over to him and give him a brotherly hug.
They were both smiling and then I saw Jordan look over at me. I quickly looked away and started working again. Jordan walked back over to me, mixed a drink and then walked back to the guy and slid it to him. The guy held out money but Jordan pushed it away. I was really confused at this point.
Jordan walked back over to me and started working beside me. I turned around and grabbed a beer handing it to some random guy. "Who's that?" I asked Jordan, nodding in the direction of the man he was just talking to. Even though he had sunglasses on I felt like he was staring at me. Jordan cracked a slight smile. "Norman Reedus."
I felt the blood run in my cold as I swallowed. I slowly turned my head to look up at Jordan. "What?" he asked while still working. I reached around him and grabbed a straw putting it in a drink and sliding it to a girl. She laid money on the bar and walked away. "That's Norman Reedus?" I questioned him. Jordan looked down at me while cocking an eyebrow.
"Yeah why?" he asked me curiously. I chuckled and patted his shoulder. "No reason. I'm going to use the restroom," I said while walking around him. I walked towards Norman, it was the only way to the restroom. I sighed and averted my eyes hoping that he would just ignore me.
I watched as he stamped out a cigarette in the ashtray in front of him. I quickly slid past and walked around the corner. I quickly called Stacey. "Two phone calls in one night. I feel special," she said. I rolled my eyes. "No time for funny business Stace. I gotta tell you something," I said. I heard Stacey chuckle on the other end. "Lay it on me babe." I slowly looked around the corner.
"You're never gonna believe who's in my brother's bar right now," I said. "Who?" Stacey asked a little too excitedly. I sighed. "Norman Reedus," I quickly pulled my phone away from my ear as I heard Stacey scream. The music in this place was enough to drive you insane and now she was screaming her head off like she had just won the lottery or something.
I put the phone back to my ear as I heard rustling on the end and then Stacey's out of breath voice. "Sorry, dropped the phone." Once again I rolled my eyes and bit my thumbnail nervously. "You sure it's him?" Stacey asked. I sighed and peeked around the corner again. "Hold on," I said. I looked around the corner and quickly snapped a picture of the back of him figuring if Stacey obsessed over him this much that she would know what his back looked like.
"Okay I just sent you a picture," I said. It was silent between us as we waited. "Oh. My. God," she said. I chuckled lightly. "I wasn't lying," I said. I heard Stacey clicking away on her phone probably saving the photo or telling the world that her friend knew Norman or something. "You lucky bitch," I heard her state. I chuckled lightly.
"It's not that big of a deal," I said. I heard Stacey gasp. "Not that big of a deal? It's a huge deal!" she exclaimed. I slumped against the wall behind me. "Not to me, Stace. To me he's just another guy trying to live his life," I said. Stacey sighed dreamily. "Okay, I'm just gonna go and let you fantasize over him now," I said. I heard Stacey chuckle as I hung up the phone.
I walked around the corner. I was automatically greeted by the guys sitting on barstools staring in that direction. "HEEEEY!" they all screamed when I threw my hands up in the air letting them know I was back. I looked to see Norman with his back to me. Guess he didn't really care.
Soon we were cleaning up and everyone had trickled out. Jordan was cleaning tables while I continued wiping down the bar. I glanced over to see Norman sitting in the same spot a couple empty bottles in front of him and another one he was sliding in between his hands almost deciding if he should drink it or not. I slowly walked over to him.
I motioned at the two empty bottles. He nodded and I slid them into a trash bag. Things were silent just the scraping of chairs and tables and beer bottles hitting the bottom of the trash. "Your Jordan's sister?" I heard the voice behind me. I sucked in a breath. It was the first thing I heard him say ever and it was directed towards me. There was something sexy about his voice. The raspy-ness to it made you want to melt right there.
I turned around and looked at him. "Y-yeah, Amanda. Mandy," I said. I heard the shake in my voice. Dammit, I didn't even know him and he already made me nervous. He cracked a slight smile. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," he said. I smiled. "S'okay," I said. It fell silent again for a few seconds.
"Good band," he said. I cocked my head to the side. "Your shirt," he said while nodding at me. I looked down and noticed I was wearing my Black Angels shirt. I looked up at him and smiled. "You like them?" I asked. He chuckled and I felt my heart jump and it felt like my air was restricted.
"Yeah they're pretty good. Better than that stupid Disney shit they put on the radio these days," he said. I felt myself laugh. Suddenly a phone rang and Norman picked his up and groaned but answered it. "Yeah?" he said. I turned my back to him so it didn't look like I was eavesdropping, but secretly I was somewhat listening.
"You kidding me?...Why can't you?" Fine!" I heard the barstool turn around. Norman walked over to Jordan and they started speaking in hushed tones. Jordan had a slightly concerned look on his face but nodded and gave him a brotherly hug. I quickly acted like I was busy as I saw Norman walk my way. I knew he was heading to the door.
I decided to be brave. "It was nice meeting you, uh," I acted like I didn't know his name. I saw a slight smile creep across his mouth. "Norman," he said while holding his hand out to me. I slid my hand into his as I felt his firm yet soft grip. "Norman," I repeated. He quickly removed his hand and started walking towards the door.
"See you tomorrow Jordan," I heard Norman say. Jordan threw a wave over his shoulder. I heard the door open and waited to hear it shut but it didn't. I looked up to see Norman still standing there a little awkwardly. Even though he had sunglasses on I knew he was looking at me. "Mandy," he said and then like that he was gone. I felt my breath catch. Only certain people called me that. I looked up to see Jordan staring at me with a grin on his face. "What?" I asked him. He shook his head. "Smoooooth."
