Chapeter 13| So It Goes

The funeral had ended but there were still groups of people scattered around the cemetery whispering to themselves what a horrible tragedy it was that Will Byers had lost his life at such a long age. It was clearly bothering Jonathan who wanted to move as far away from the crowd as possible.

Sam played with the sleeves of her black cardigan as Jonathan set a map of the town out on the table. There were markings all over it and Nancy immediately leaned toward to take a better look. Sam on the other hand still couldn't wrap her mind around any of it. She wasn't taking this as well as Jonathan and Nancy who seemed eager to find whatever that thing was.

"This is where we know for sure it's been, right?" Jonathan questioned as he pointed at some of the markings on the map."So, that's Steve's house and that's the woods where they found Will's bike and that's my house.'

"It's all so close." Nancy noted as her eyes remained focused on the map.

"Yeah, Exactly. I mean, it's all within a mile or something."

"So whatever this thing is, it's not traveling very far."

"You want to go out there." Sam stated though it sounded more like a question. She had been watching Nancy and Jonathan talk and it wasn't until now that she felt like she could even speak. As she spoke her voice didn't sound like her own, Sam normally wasn't this soft spoken. But Sam didn't entirely feel like herself.

Jonathan paused as he looked between Nancy and Sam. "We might not find anything."

"I found something." Nancy reminded them, but even she seemed a little apprehensive about it all. "And if we do see it... then what?"

"We kill it." Jonathan declared without one once of hesitation.

"That's insane." Sam exclaimed in disbelief. Even the idea itself sounded so ridiculous that she almost wanted to believe that Jonathan was joking. They were teenagers. They couldn't possibly think that they could go against whatever it was that had taken Will, Barb and Jules.  "Nancy you said that thing was seven feet tall."

Suddenly Jonathan got to his feet the determination on his didn't change even after Sam's not so encouraging words. "Come on."

Nancy and Sam shared a concerned look before standing up and following Jonathan across the parking lot. He stopped in front of a car that she didn't recognize, carelessly opening the car and looking through the glove box.

"This isn't your car." Sam whispered as she looked around the cemetery. Maybe Jonathan was actually going insane.

"No it's my dads." He quickly replied which eased some of Sam's concerns but she couldn't resist asking more questions.

"What are you doing?"

"Just give me a second." Jonathan said irritation now laced in his voice as he suddenly pulled a gun out.

"Are you serious?" Sam and Nancy both exclaimed, their eyes wide in shock as they looked at the gun in Jonathan's had. Neither girl had clearly ever seen a gun before.

"What you want to find this thing and take another photo? Yell at it?" Jonathan questioned the frustration of everything that was happening finally causing him to start to crack. Gone was the shy Jonathan who could barely look either girl in the eye.

"This is a terrible idea."Nancy muttered softly, realizing that they were in over their heads.

Sam quickly nodded in agreement feeling slightly relieved that Nancy felt the same way that she did. "I agree."

"Yeah, well, its the best we've got. What? You can tell someone, but they're not gonna believe you." He argued, and although neither girl would admit it they knew he was right. What sane adult would believe a bunch of teenagers when they said there was a monster in the woods. The entire town would think that they were crazy. "You both know that."

"Your mom would." Nancy noted but Jonathan immediately shook his head in response.

"She's been through enough."

"She deserves to know."

Over the last couple days there had been a drastic change in Jonathan. When his brother had first gone missing he almost seemed to have accepted it, now that sadness was replaced with anger. "Yeah, and I'll tell her when this thing is dead."

"I like the optimism but I still think this is insane." Sam told them and although the words coming out of her mouth were very much true, and she knew it was all a terrible idea. She also knew that she was going to do it anyway. Even if every bone in her body was telling her to run away from all of this as soon as possible.

"Its the only way for us to get Will, Barbara and Julian back." He argued, and never in a million years did Samantha ever think that she would be following Jonathan Byers.

Sam stood in front of the police station feeling nothing but uncertainty. She had never stepped foot in the police station and although she normally wasn't someone who felt shy, there was something holding her back. Nancy and Jonathan were sure that Julian had also been taken by that thing in the woods, and all facts pointed to that being true. But there was still that small chance that something else had happened to Jules, and Samantha wanted to make sure that not a single stone would be left unturned.

Officer Calvin Powell was leaning against the desk as he spoke to the secretary, they both looked up as Sam walked in both of them sharing concerned expressions. Sam couldn't help but feel that until recently not many people come into the station.

"Samantha? What are you doing here kid?" Officer Powell questioned as he took a sip of his coffee. Her father was friends with Powell the two occasionally drinking a beer or two on the porch. "What can I help you with."

"Hi, I would actually like to speak to Sheriff Hopper." Samantha stated firmly knowing that although it was Powell that she trusted, it was Hopper that would get anything done. Jonathan had told her the Hopper had been working hard to help find Will, so maybe he would do the same for Julian.

"Hey kid, what's wrong?" Someone questioned and Sam tuned around to find Sheriff Hopper stepping into the room. All she knew about Hopper were rumors and none of them were very good, looking at the man now he seemed exhausted.

Some part of Sam still felt like reporting Julian could be a mistake, but she knew it was the right thing to do. That Julian's disappearance needed to be known, that he wouldn't be forgotten. "I'm here to report my friend as missing."

Hopper's mood quickly soured, the man seemed annoyed. Clearly all these disappearances were not what he signed up for. He wasn't a big city cop that dealt with these kinds of crimes. This was Hawkins, a small town where crime almost didn't exist.

"Lets talk in my office." Hopper instructed as he gestured for her to follow. The police station wasn't very big, and they only had to turn one corner before they arrived at the small room that was his office. There were stacks papers scattered around the room and the smell of cigarettes in the air was almost unbearable. "Who is missing?"

"Julian Becker."

Hopper took a seat behind his desk and Sam took that as her signal to also take a seat. He already seemed skeptical from the way he looked at her and the way he was so casually slouching in his chair. "Michael Becker's boy?"

"Yes."

"How long has he been missing?"

"Four days. Since the night of the first search party." Sam explained as she attempted to seem as collected as possible even though she felt like her world was falling apart around her. The world that she once thought she lived in was now a distant memory. It felt like nothing could ever be the same.

"And why hasn't Michael Becker come to report him missing?"

She knew that he would ask her this, because any parent would report their child as missing after a couple of hours. But not Michael Becker, the man clearly had no intentions of reporting Julian as missing. "Cause he doesn't have a good relationship with his father."

"Then maybe he ran away." The man lazily offered.

Sam's anger spiked in a way that she couldn't explain. Hopper clearly didn't care, or at least he assumed that there was no case her. But what frustrated Sam was that he wasn't even entertaining the idea that Jules could be missing and in danger. "Just like Barbara Holland ran away? You don't really think this is a coincidence do you?"

Hopper sighed and looked at her with pity. "Maybe they ran away together?"

"You've got to be kidding me!" Samantha finally exclaimed as she stood realizing that the town's sheriff had no interest in doing anything. So maybe all the rumors of Hopper being nothing but a depressed drunk were true. "This was clearly a mistake."

"Kid. Wait." Hopper also stood and it almost seemed like he regretted the way that he had handled the situation but it was too late Sam was gone trying to do things in what she believed was the right way.

"I'm not a kid." Sam stated firmly as she walked out of Hopper's office. Initially she had believed that coming to the station to report Jules as missing was a mistake. Now she didn't think that was the case, in fact she was glad that she had talked to Hopper.

It was the wake up call that she needed. The adults didn't believe them and they never would. If they wanted anything done they would have to do it themselves. Sure they were only teenagers, but they were the only ones looking to find answers. And in a single moment all of Samantha's hesitations melted away, and now she was just as resolved as Jonathan and Nancy. They were going to find whatever it was that Nancy saw in the woos and she would get her best friend back.
