Friend Against Friend
Arriving on the rooftop just behind his girlfriend, Max gasped at what he saw. The roof looked the same, with the flowerpots and spooky shed in the corner. But laying on the ground a few feet from the shed was a motionless mound of feathers. Stepping closer, Max saw that Tiberius's throat had been slashed open in a savage manner. The hawk's eyes were shut tight, blood gushing out of his wound in heavy torrents. "Tiberius..." Gidget's voice cracked as she stared at her best friend's mangled body. Behind her, the other three arrived and stared speechless at the scene before them. "Who did this?" Buddy wondered aloud just as a furry comet crashed into him.
Screaming, Buddy flung the attacking animal away from him. Scared, the group edged towards the exit when Chloe piped up, "Wait, it's Norman." Sure enough, it was the little guinea pig who cherished every living soul. But now, with his fur drenched in blood and a murderous look in his pitch black eyes, he was prepared to take their souls. He slowly walked towards the pets, hissing and growling at them. Frightened, Max shut his eyes, waiting for the killing blow. Surprisingly though, it never came. Max cautiously opened one eye.
Norman, for some reason, had stopped in his tracks. Three spikes had imbedded themselves in his tiny skull. "I'm sorry little guy," a voice whispered sympathetically. That's when Max noticed that Tiberius was right behind the guinea pig. Gidget let out a sigh of relief while Chloe leaned over the roof and started throwing up. Gently, the hawk extracted his talons out of his friend. Blood spilled out of Norman's forehead, his neck hanging limply in a funny angle. Sickened by the sight, Buddy joined Chloe at the edge of the rooftop.
The guinea pig tipped over slightly and was about to fall. Before the last second, however, Tiberius caught Norman's deceased body, tears brimming in his eyes. Coughing up blood, the hawk collapsed into a heap, still holding onto his little friend. Worried about her pal, Gidget added quietly over to the old hawk. "Tiberius, come on. We have to go," she whispered, nudging his head. "Leave me here. If I'm to die, I wish to die right next to Norman," Tiberius replied, a trickle of blood flowing out of his mouth. His breathing grew shallower by the minute. "Know this, Gidget," he whispered quietly, "You were the best friend I ever had..." The old hawk's voice faded, his heart beating slower and slower. "Farewell..." Tiberius spoke for the last time. His eyes quickly glazed over, the light inside them gone. Crying, Gidget carefully shut them. Max pulled her into a comforting embrace, shedding his own tears. Snowball shook his head in sadness, seeing too much death in a single day.
Suddenly, Chloe broke the silence with a shout, "Guys, something's wrong with Buddy!"
