Haunting friends

Written 2012 by VeGirl

About an hour later we were on our way back. We had a relaxing shower, breakfast on the patio and put some clothes on that weren't ripped to shreds. The wounds on my neck were nicely healed as well.

I had called Elena and told her we were on our way back and that everything was okay. She on the other hand told me that Stefan had gone away with Elijah to deal with our secret camera man. They would not be back for another hour.

We passed the boarding house driveway and drove straight up to the hotel to get Lexi. Damon held my hand almost defiantly when we knocked on the door and then opened it.

The room was empty.

Damon had bought Lexi a cell phone when we went shopping the day before, and he called her when we realised she was gone.

"Where are you?" was all I heard and I was extremely curious to where she had gone. For the first time I wished I had vampire-hearing.

"We'll be there," he said and hung up.

I had shrugged into a pair of my own jeans and a tee, which was still in my closet while Damon finished his phone call.

"She's gone out," he tried to look annoyed but started to smile. "She hasn't been out in the sun a lot for the last three hundred and fifty years..."

He pulled me close and we left the hotel with his arm around my shoulders.

He parked outside the Mystic Grill and got out of the car where we walked hand-in-hand to the towns square. Lexi sat on a bench in the sunshine and watched us walk over. She had a big grin on her face.

"Enjoying the sun?" I asked smiling.

She laughed. "Yes, but I enjoy watching the two of you even more," she said in a taunting way. "Damon in love... I never thought I would see the day..."

He made a face at her. "Yeah well, I almost killed her yesterday, just to prove you wrong," he revealed and it felt horrible when I heard it. "But, you know what? I think you might be right." He looked at me with a smile, put his arm around me, pulled me closer and kissed my temple.

I think I blushed. Did he say he loved me? Now I really must be imagining things.

She was fast on her feet. "Yay!" She jumped up and down and clapped her hands. Damon looked surprised at her.

"He has finally broken through the self-hate. I told you a long time ago that it would destroy you."

He sighed. "You're perky..." He rolled his eyes skywards.

"Lexi, I'm really glad I met you," I said smiling and she hugged me.

"And I'm so glad to have met you. Now let's go screw with the ripper-boy." She had a wicked smile and we took the car to the boarding house. Elena met us in the hallway and hugged Lexi. "How are you doing?"

"Great, just great!" She had a huge smile. "Have rested for a while and am ready to live!"

Elena and I laughed.

"So, when does our little blood-junkie going to get home?" she wanted to know, and then she told her little plan to screw with his head, and we were all aboard.

A flatiron was quickly produced for my hair and in a few minutes I had a hair-due that was frighteningly alike Lexi's.

When Stefan showed up half an hour later I sat in the library with my back to the door; he walked past the door.

"Hi Stefan!" Lexi said.

"Hi Lexi," he replied calm and took a few steps before he came to a halt and warped into the library, rounded the couch I sat in and stared at my face.

"Hi Stefan, how did it go today?" I said.

He looked at me with confusion in his eyes. "What? Today? Oh that went extremely well. But..." He looked around. "How are you? Damon and you had a bit of a row yesterday." He was still puzzled.

"Oh I kicked his ass, so that's all been sorted out," I said and watched Damon and Elena come in and join us.

Stefan said he just was going up to drop something off at his room and left us. None of us could say anything about Lexi but we knew that when he passed the window by the stairs, he was going to see a reflection of her both on his way up and on his way back down to us.

His face showed the confusion clear when he came back, but he revealed nothing.

"So tell us about today, did you and Elijah find anything out." Damon was good at deflecting and not letting anything show. Elena and I couldn't even look at each other; we knew we would crack laughing.

"Oh, we found the ones responsible for the footage; they had this editing-studio set up and were working on it when we showed up." Stefan got a spark in his eye as he explained.

"And..." Elena and I prompted.

"We compelled as many as we could. They will never remember anything about vampires or Mystic Falls again. They will just believe that everything was a weird dream," he said with a smug expression.

Hmm, who did that remind me of? Oh, yes, me! I thought.

"And the ones you couldn't compel?" Damon wanted the whole story.

"We killed them and burned the house down. I'm hungry; I'll go get some blood." He left for the basement.

"Killed and burned?" Elena yelped startled.

"Obviously the only solution," Damon said, supportive of his brother and Elijah's decision.

We knew Lexi had heard everything and would act as she thought fit, and when Stefan came up to the library again he was definitely stressed.

He went straight to the liqueur table and poured the bag of blood in a glass, downed it and then mixed blood and bourbon, took it with him and came over to us, but looked over his shoulder a couple of times.

"What is it Stef?" Damon asked, looking like he had no clue about what was going on. "You look stressed out."

"Oh nothing. You know what, they probably has made a lot of money on our account. They had even made DVD:s. Who would buy that?" he asked.

I thought for a while that I probably should be quiet, but... "Erm... I have a DVD-box from season one." I said and the other stared at me.

It took quite a while before Elena asked; "How many seasons are there?"

Then I couldn't hold the laughter back anymore. "This is absurd!" I kept laughing. "You're just a figment of my imagination," I laughed. "No, even worse, of somebody else's imagination," I continued, laughing so hard that tears started to roll down my cheeks. Elena started to laugh as well.

It was probably the tension over everything that had happened during this last week, that let everything just crumble and the walls fell down.

"Well, now that show has been cancelled." Stefan's words made the laughter disappear instantly. I would really miss the show when I got home. Wait a minute, what did I mean? I couldn't keep watching them on TV anyway, I would really miss them though.

Stefan whipped his head around again.

"What is it Stef?" Damon started to look worried about his brother.

Stefan looked back at his brother's innocent face. "It just feels like here is somebody watching us, can't you feel it'"

Damon pretended to look around but then shook his head. "No, it feels just fine."

Stefan shrugged.

"Maybe you just need to calm down; it's been a stressful couple of months." Elena smiled comforting at him.

The smile he gave her back, was actually sweet and loving. "Thank you Elena!" He sat down next to her and took her hand. "I'm so glad I didn't manage to chase you away." He smiled again.

"Naaw, how sweet!"

Even Elena and I heard it and it was really obvious to Stefan and Damon. Stefan was up on his feet in no time and whipped his head around. "What?!"

"What's the matter Stefan; you're freaking me out."

Elena and I were trying so hard to keeping up appearances.

He threw his hands out. "I need to get out of this house!"

"How about a game of pool at the Grill?" I suggested and we were all up and out of the house in no time.

I was really enjoying the sunny day with all four of us in Damon's car with the top down and me riding shotgun next to Damon. I turned my face up towards the sun and smiled; when I turned it back again I saw Lexi standing, casually leaning by a fence along the road. She was visible just so we could catch a glimpse of her. I saw Damon note Stefan's head whip around in the back seat, through the rear view mirror. Damon hid a smile and I turned my smiling face out the window to do the same.

As we walked through the door at the Grill, someone was on their way out.

"Hey Stefan," a blond girl said.

"Hey Lexi," Stefan replied and then spun around to see a blond girl looking peculiar at him. I had never seen her before and Stefan was more confused than ever and spun around to look at his brother.

"Did you hear that?"

"What?"

"It was Lexi's ghost! Have you heard anything from Bonnie about the ghost's coming back?"

Elena, Damon and I looked at each other and then shook our heads.

"No she hasn't said anything, but I can call her if you want," Elena offered.

"Oh, never mind. It must be my mind playing tricks on me," he mumbled with a brooding forehead. "Let's play pool."

He tried to smile and we got over to the pool table where he laid the billiard balls and carefully broke them over the table. We had played for a while and Stefan seemed to relax finally. Suddenly he just stopped and stared over at the bar.

A girl with long blond hair had caught his attention and the three of us could see that it was Lexi without a doubt.

"Lexi?" He said hard-set.

She turned around and then she was gone.

"What?" Damon was still making an innocent face. I had to turn around to prevent the laugh that was threatening to erupt.

We had promised Lexi to make her own entrance and we were going to keep that promise, but we hoped it to come soon. We were getting anxious.

He growled "Wait till I get my hands on this Lexi-ghost... Last time I saw her, she tied me up and tortured me," he growled and I stared at him. This I didn't know.

"You can try, but I'd kick your ass!" We heard Lexi's mirthful voice as clear as a bell. In a whiff of air she was standing behind him, with her hands over Stefan's eyes. He twirled around and stood face to face with his former best friend.

"Lexi?"

"Hi."

Stefan was taken aback. "You're dead."

"Well technically... so are you," she said smiling at him.

"Just vanish or whatever you ghosts do," he said with a smirk. "You tortured me. I don't want you around."

Oops, our plan was blowing up in our faces.

"You keep saying that. Leave me alone!" She was mimicking his voice and the rest of us was probably holding our breath. I know I was.

Stefan was just staring at her.

"Oh come on! You know all about ripper-detox, but I can see you're better now." Lexi kept smiling. "Maybe you should thank me?"

"For torturing me? Have I ever told you how glad I am that you are dead?"

"Oh, I missed you too, friend. You better get used to it, 'cause I'm back," she said with one of her sweet smiles.

"No, my asshole for a brother killed you." He glared at Damon.

"And now, he brought me back."

Stefan started to look around at us and then returned his eyes to Lexi. "I promised to rip you apart, remember?" He tilted his head to the side as he looked at her dead serious.

They kept staring at each other, Stefan with his bad boy look and Lexi with her smirk.

"You know I'd kick your ass if you tried," she replied with a little laugh. "Come now and give me a hug!" She took a few steps and hugged him and he hugged her back.

"You're back? Not a ghost?" He couldn't believe what he saw and heard.

"I'm back, in the flesh!" she still had a big secretive smile in her face.

"But... but..." he kept staring at her with his characteristic brooding forehead. "How is that possible?"

"Magic!" she whispered.
