3. Infected with Namimori Syndrome.

It's not too jarring, to be reincarnated as a different sex. Maybe he's just weird, but he's never thought much about that kind of thing. So even after he fully acknowledges both lives, he simply continues his usual lifestyle, steadily picking up his pieces and catching up with the rest of his peers.

He wears Drew's favourite pins every day, holding back his bangs to the side.

Things aren't the same anymore, not at all.

His father comes home and, true to his words, stays. He still leaves, every once in a while for emergencies he can't break away from, but he's home nearly every night.

That means the world to them.

And most of all, Rei embraces the side of him that used to be hers, and allows it to overtake his own instincts in many things.

"I can parkour as long as my lungs don't collapse on me, right?" Rei asks Kuma-sensei one day, and the doctor, in coffee-and-whiskey-addled half-consciousness, had said yes.

"If you get injured, come over immediately."

"He allowed us!" Rei cheers. "We got that on camera, so no take-backs are allowed! Let's go, Takeshi!"

In that life, Drew performed in a circus.

In this life, Rei opens a Youtube channel and runs wild.

(Kuma-sensei suffers in the background.)

"Do you miss them too?"

He finds her in a dream.

Drew Cite, dressed in a white tailcoat. She spins a top hat on her finger, and gently sets it back down on her head.

When she looks up, she's miserable. Her eyes are red and raw, her makeup's a smudged mess, and there are bruises on her pale skin. Her lips are chapped, broken from violence.

"I do," he says. "I want to see them again."

They're alone, here. They will never truly be a complete set of three clowns again, but Rei can always pretend.

"Is that why you've replaced them?" Drew asks, her tone sharp and accusatory. "You dress your sisters in red and blue. But they will never, ever, be our ruby and sapphire. You know that."

"I know," he admits. He squeezes his shirt around his heart, and he looks away. "I know."

Drew will be broken forever, and there's nothing Rei can do about it. They can never go home, and everything they've done, everything they've left unfinished— it will never be complete ever again.

"I want to go home," Drew sobs into her knees.

Rei shrivels up inside.

"I know," he says, and he leans in, on his knees and sprawling into her lap, looking up at her face. "But we have to live. Would you watch over me?"

"Daily Sasagawa Sighting —with @EXTREMEBOXINGCLUBMEM" video by @GRE3NH0USE

[Video ID—

"Okay stand by," Rei says, bringing the camera with him. He finally stops, making sure there's a good view toward the entrance of the baseball club. "Anytime now."

Takeshi enters the view from the other direction, returning from morning practice. He grins when he spots Rei, waving a hello. Rei waves back.

And right on cue, a loud yell pierces through the morning.

"That was an Extreme morning practice, Yamamoto!" Sasagawa marches forward with a purpose. "SO! How about it! Join the boxing club, you're amazing!"

Takeshi chuckles. "Sorry, Senpai, my heart's set on baseball."

Instead of feeling dejected, Sasagawa pumps his fist with determination. "Is that so!? Then I understand!" he takes a breath, and slightly off camera, Rei covers his ears. "HEY, baseball club captain! I'LL DUEL YOU FOR YAMAMOTO!"

Immediately the club doors slam open, and a senior emerges, holding a baseball bat.

"OH YEAH?" he yells. "Bring it on, Sasagawa!"

Sasagawa roars, charging forward— and the baseball club captain roars right back, winding up the baseball bat and whacking him straight in the face with it, sending him flying back a couple yards.

The baseball club captain stands straight, pointing the bat forward condescendingly.

"WEAK!" he declares. "Game set! Yamamoto belongs to us!"

Sasagawa wails. "REMATCH!"

"DENIED! GO AWAY!" and the baseball club captain grabs Takeshi by the elbow, pulling him into the room before slamming it shut behind him.

Sasagawa gets up, nursing a bloody nose as he dejectedly walks away.

Rei turns back to the camera, grimacing, but he smiles in a sort of resigned amusement. "He does that every day, same time, same place," he says. "Don't worry, he's super sturdy. We're used to it."

The video ends up having about a million views, and most of its attention stems from people who are discussing the legal ramifications of smacking a teenager in the face with a baseball bat. Predictably, lots of people are demanding the video be taken down for encouraging senseless violence.

Rei's actually very relieved to hear that people outside Namimori react normally.

In this town, no one sees the problem with it at all. Rei likes that about this town, but it's nice to know you're not completely insane yet.

This was a town where the youngest Hibari held more authority than police, and the Sasagawa son could effortlessly shatter walls by running into them. Hell— Yamamoto's kid hit a home run before he hit ten years old! Ninomiya Rei becoming an influencer was hardly the most alarming thing in the list.

(That's the perk of being born into a shounen manga town, Rei supposes. People tend to dismiss things in favour of comedic potential.)

"Hey, Tsuyoshi-san," Rei says, "this house has a dojo at the back, right? So do you actually do dojo things or nah?"

Tsuyoshi hums. "We used to," he says, and sets down a dish of nigiri in front of Rei and Takeshi. "Now, not so much."

"How come?"

"Between taking care of Takeshi and the restaurant, my hands are full."

"Heh," Rei hums, "then, I can help out the store. Can you teach Takeshi kendo and stuff?"

Father and son stop what they're doing immediately, turning to stare at Rei in utter confusion. That suggestion comes unwarranted and out of nowhere, and it doesn't even have anything to do with himself.

"Me?" Takeshi asks. "I've got baseball, so I might be busy."

"It'll be like baseball," Rei says, completely with no basis. "Plus, it'll be cool. And I want to watch. I'm sure you'll be good at it, so it'll be awesome."

Takeshi hums at that, crossing his arms in contemplation. "I suppose you have a point."

Tsuyoshi stares incredulously.

Takeshi has never expressed any smidgeon of interest in the dojo before, and Tsuyoshi thought that had been convenient. He'd always wanted to keep Takeshi out of the old family tradition, to hold it back unless it were genuinely required. And yet, here Rei is, throwing that plan into disarray.

"So, can we, dad?" Takeshi asks, eyes gleaming with mild interest.

Tsuyoshi holds back a sigh. "Sure," he says. He can't exactly refuse Takeshi now. "It'll be tough, though."

Takeshi grins. "A challenge? Sweet! Sign me right up!"

Tsuyoshi adds more wasabi to Rei's next dish.

"Uhm! Pardon me, but are you perhaps 'GRE3NH0USE'-san?!"

"...how on earth did you say that out loud...? Nevermind."

The girl, Miura Haru, shows up really loudly, when Rei is doing groceries. He knows her. In this story, she's the apparent 'second love interest' whose story is made up just to fail— that sort of sad side character.

What is she doing here? They're both eleven years old and too young to interact yet. What if you meet the main character too early, dummy? Don't come here.

"I knew it!" her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, "I'm Springzy_86!"

Rei's eyes light right up with recognition. "Ah," his jaw drops, "the Beautuber!"

She's a very popular beauty vlogger around these parts. She's always wearing very heavy special effect makeup in her videos , so he hadn't recognized her at first. Did she have this kind of setup in the story?? He doesn't think so. This is so weird.

She poses, victory sign. "Yep, that's me! Call me Haru!"

"I'm Rei! Nice t'meet you!" He poses back. He's obligated to match her energy.

"Same here, same here!" she squeals, taking him by the hands, "so so, cutting right to the chase. I love your stuff! Especially the makeup segments!"

Rei's youtube channel usually consists of daily Namimori stupidity, but it most prominently features magic trick shows, little parkour race clips with Takeshi, or even stuff like Sae trying her best to cook in an apron on a stool, or Sui absolutely killing it in a shooting game.

There's something for everyone in that channel, and that's mainly why he's popular.

But in the magic shows, specifically, Rei usually dons makeup, just for fun, and just for Dad to flaunt his uniquely impeccable cosmetic skills.

"Please introduce me to your makeup artist!" Haru says, hands held together, "and collab with me! I will worship you for life!"

"Sure!" Rei beams. Why not, really. Wait. She's a gymnast! That's perfect! "Actually, it's my dad that does my makeup, so it's super easy to go see him right now. Wanna swing by my house if you have time? Also, can our collabo be a trapeze show?"

"YES!" she throws her arms up. "Rei-chan, we're way too compatible. I think you're my soulmate!"

"Oh I absolutely agree, Haru-chan. Let's get married right now!"

-

They do not, in fact, get married. They are both kinda very eleven.

But oh boy do they become best friends immediately.

They rent the local indoor court for a whole day of just reliving a circus life. It doesn't come equipped with a proper set to anything, but it does come with climbing ropes, so they improvise.

Haru tries in vain to imitate a flip Rei does, into a trapeze routine. She misses Rei's hand and falls, collapsing right into the netting below with a strangled yelp.

"We're leaving that in the video!" she laughs, when Rei's dad comes running by in a panic, asking if she's alright. "I'm okay, Yuuichirou-san! Just surprised."

"HARU!" Rei hollers, hanging upside down on the rope. "hurry up and get back here! I'm stuck until you come and grab me back!"

"Just fall!"

"NO!"

"Fall! Fall! Fall!" she cheers, then, turning to the younger sisters, she grins. "Sae-chan and Sui-chan, join me!" And then the chants get louder.

"If I get an asthma attack I'm blaming you!"

"We have your inhaler, you'll be fine!"

"NO I WON'T!"

Rei is coughing and hacking by the end of it, but they have so much damn fun. Rei doesn't usually have the physique to do it for long hours, but he works with the tenacity of someone who's done far more for years.

Haru can tell. Her mother was an Olympic gymnast, and when she watches from afar, Rei has the exact same eyes. The eyes of a professional that adores their art.

The way he swings, the way his fingers move with such perfect grace. The way his arms instinctively wrap back around himself when he realizes he's falling, to prepare himself to be caught— Haru's learned those things from classes, but somehow, Rei did it so fluidly, with instincts more honed than her own. And she loves to watch it. It's entrancing.

(She thought it was such a waste that Rei couldn't ever pursue it professionally. He would certainly excel in that field.)

"Are you going to be a gymnast when you grow up, Haru-chan?" Rei asks.

Haru shakes her head. "I like to make costumes, more than I like wearing them," she says. "I think I'll try to do both! What about you, Rei-chan?"

Rei pauses at that.

"Well..." he isn't sure, honestly. He liked this, but he can't pursue it. Nor does he have any real reason to. As he grows older, he also grows weaker. So he chuckles bashfully and admits with shame, "I don't know yet.."

This is a town destined for wonder, and yet, Rei and Haru are destined for nothing but to be an extra in the name of more prominent characters.

"I don't wanna think about that now," Rei beams. "I think we're fine as we are, Haru-chan!"

They'll trudge along, aimlessly.

That's how normal people act, right?

Rei's days in Namimori Elementary aren't filled with fanfare of any sort. Just Takeshi, Kyoko, and Rei on the rooftop, enjoying relative peace as they ate.

"Did Sae-chan make that bento?" Kyoko asks.

Rei nods. "The tomatoes in the backyard are finally ripe, so it's in every meal," he sighs. "She's really proud of it. I wish dad would teach her how to make something without it for once."

Kyoko giggles at that. Takeshi leans over and steals a roasted tomato.

"This is good!" Takeshi brightens, stealing another. "I'm envious, all I ever get for bento are the diner's leftovers."

"That's also good!" Kyoko says, stealing a piece of sashimi.

"I'm much more envious of Kyoko's," Rei says, "yours is always different every day."

Kyoko chuckles, holding it out so Rei could steal a karaage.

This friendship is a strange one. The school's cutest, the school's sportiest, and the school's most medically hampered. They had found each other on the roof one day, trying to get away from the hustle of attention from peers and teachers, and here they stayed every day from then on.

"Are you still getting those weird dream things?" Kyoko asks.

Rei shakes his head. "They've kinda settled down," because he remembered it all already, but he keeps that to himself.

"Hmm. They come and go like your sickness, huh?" Takeshi says. "Are they related?"

Rei chuckles. "No way!"

It's strange to know that your friends were fictional characters— or, were fictional characters. They certainly are real now, and Rei can't bring himself to see them as just narrative devices any more. It's jarring sometimes, but he gets used to it.

(In the same way he gets used to the chronic loneliness that spikes every time he sees the pins in his hair, a reminder of what he'll never get again.)

Soon, the story will begin, and the chaos he's been thriving in will only get worse.

Honestly, he's looking forward to it. It'll be a good distraction.

He may not be blessed with a physique that will allow him to run as wild as he'd like— but what else can he do but charge on until he collapses?

("You've got all this happiness in your hands— so I'm sure you'll be fine," says the man whose name he still doesn't know. "Don't become a deadbeat like me, alright?")

Rei sighs, looking toward the sky, finding the crescent moon hanging in the daytime sky.

He just wants to live in this world restfully. He doesn't want to be a protector, saviour, or rewriter of anything— he just wants to be here, to live the peaceful, stable, free life Drew Cite never had the chance to live.

Rei realizes Reborn is here when Sawada Tsunayoshi charges across the road in his boxers, screaming something about needing to confess to Kyoko.

He takes out his phone.

REI:

lololol watch out Kyoko,
Incoming underpants man.

KYOKO:

?
??
???
Why didn't you stop him?!?!?

REI:

Cough cough

KYOKO:

HE CONFESSED
HELP

REI:

Noo dun cheat on me and Takeshi

KYOKO:

Good idea actually

Rei has no idea what the good idea is, but he doesn't get much time to guess. He takes a step closer to the school gates and Kyoko has Takeshi by the elbow, her arm cradled overly sweetly against the school jock's. Her phone was still in her hand, though held a little subtly in the crook of their arms.

Takeshi smiles, entirely confused but rolling with it.

Huh, Rei looks around. Mochida Kensuke isn't around. Probably because Takeshi's here instead and no one can win against Takeshi in the popular kids department.

"S-Sorry, Tsuna-kun," she says, looking clearly embarrassed by the loud confession in broad daylight. "I really appreciate your feelings, but... I'm kind of going out with Takeshi-kun and Rei-kun."

They ignore the absolute mayhem their words have caused the entire school. There were people screeching about their school jock, school weakling, and school madonna apparently being an official three-way couple.

"Oh, we are?" Takeshi asks, and Kyoko turns to him, smiling sweetly as she nods. "Okay, I guess we are."

Rei facepalms. People have noticed him halfway down the road. He wants to turn around and go home.

Instantly, all the energy heaves out of Tsuna like a drenched fuse.

And then, his face burns bright red. "I- I. I'm. I'M SO SORRY!" he yells, bowing down ninety degrees. He looks ready to die of embarrassment. "I- I– I." He short circuits.

"I... am flattered, though..." Kyoko says, respectfully averting her eyes from the heart prints, burying her face into Takeshi's back.

Takeshi speaks up with the million dollar question. "So Tsuna, why in your boxers?"

Tsuna jerks upright. "UH!" he spins around. "NO REASON!" and then he bolts for it, screaming internally and externally as he crumbles and shrivels and escapes with all his might. "I'M SO SO SORRY TO BOTHER YOU IGOTTAGOBYE!"

-

Kyoko's a genius. No one even remembers Tsuna being in his underwear, they're all too obsessed with the new revelation that Kyoko and Takeshi were both taken and they've set their murder weapons on Relatively Harmless Rei instead.

"SINCE WHEN?!"

"Damn it, how did you score two hotties?! WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?!"

"No comment," Rei interrupts, holding up a finger to his lips to indicate a shush. "Magicians never reveal their secrets."

Everyone wails. They really wanted to know.

"Oh, Tsuna, good morning! Too bad about you! I feel you, man!"

For some reason, instead of Tsuna, Rei is the one that wants to curl up and die. Kyoko and Takeshi had run off some time ago, leaving Rei to the mercy of their classmates.

Apparently, to them, if they were going to resolve themselves to confess to Kyoko, they would've stripped down to express their sincerity too. In fact, they now hella respect Tsuna for taking the metaphorical bullet for them.

"No, I took a literal one, too," Tsuna says, in full genuinity but he already knows no one will take that seriously. "I have no idea what happened but I want to jump off a bridge."

"Tsuna, come here, let's cry together!"

"I know a good bridge!"

Even the girls were fussing over him, all whining over Takeshi (and some, Kyoko as well,) as they shook a lifelessly despairing Tsuna out of his misery.

...well, at least Tsuna's made friends?

"Fess up, Rei! What'd you do to get them?!"

"Well honestly I'd suspend my disbelief for Yamamoto-kun, you're always doing your streaming stuff together. But why Kyoko-chan?!?"

"And since when?!"

Rei is going to chokehold Kyoko when he finds her again. How dare she just throw this chaos onto him.

The crowd is abruptly disrupted by loud stomping, feral roaring, and Sasagawa Ryohei slamming the classroom doors open.

"NINOMIYA REI, you Relatively Harmless bastard!" he yells, and Rei buries his hands into his face in despair. Why had he not considered the consequences of fake-dating Kyoko before this? Kyoko come fix your brother. "DUEL ME!"

Everyone scatters immediately, some people cheering and some people wailing, but overall, apparently everyone has forgotten that today is a school day.

Rei sighs, "okay so," the one that gets challenged has the right to pick the battle, and the first person to get injured loses. "I'll race you to the front gates?"

"YEAH!" Ryohei punches the air, "I'll extremely take that challenge!"

Tsuna lifts his head abruptly when Rei stands up to open the window beside him, gauging the distance between here and the nearest tree.

"Alright then," Rei says, "race starts now!"

He jumps.

Everyone cheers, and Tsuna screams in horror. He's the only normal person in this damn town, and apparently he's the only one that knows you shouldn't let someone parkour out the damn second floor window.

And then Ryohei enthusiastically follows him out on and now everyone is screaming.

Rei sighs, making his way to a tree, and from one branch to the other. It's good luck this was right beside his classroom window— he freezes when he looks to the side and catches sight of a certain fedora-wearing infant, resting upon one of the branches and sipping tea with the pigeons.

"Ciaossu," Reborn says.

Rei doesn't know what to say. "Uhh... yeah," he stutters. "Ciaossu... or whatever. Well if you'd excuse me."

He decides not to think about it, making his way to the next branch, before dropping safely onto the ground with a huff. He dusts off his hands, contemplating his life decisions for a deep-seated moment.

Right after that, Ryohei comes falling down screeching and breaking branches before falling flat on his face like a cartoon character.

"Alright," Rei says in a deadpan, "that's an injury. You lose."

"DAMMIT!" he bolts upright. "I won't lose next time, Ninomiya! But for now I'll acknowledge you!"

"Please don't."

"You hurt my sister and I'll snap you in half!"

"Of course."

Rei sighs when Ryohei inevitably trudges back into the building, making a beeline to the infirmary. He's in luck, because that nonsense allowed him to skip out on the class' interrogations.

Maybe he'll just go home from here. Playing hooky would be fine until the commotion dies down, right?

"You've caused quite a riot today."

Rei jolts in surprise, tensing fearfully. He doesn't want to turn around.

"I'm sure you know the consequences of that," Hibari Kyouya growls at him, and his brows are furrowed, eyes narrowed sharply in something that can only be pure annoyance.

Rei is really going to chokehold Kyoko when he finds her again.

But for now, he turns tail and runs away with all of his might. He scales the tree beside him, hikes up to the windows, and leaps down onto the roof of the storage shed. He pauses there to catch his breath for a long minute, and then he keeps running along the walls of the school gates.

Hibari stares at his unconventional escape route, exasperated.

"...a squirrel," he deems.

-

"Hi, Tsuna-kun."

Tsuna shrieks, juice carton jumping out of his hands when Rei approaches him in an isolated corner of the school building. He'd been hiding here, trying to eat his lunch in peace.

"N- Ninomiya-kun!" he says.

They weren't really acquainted before this— just fellow schoolmates notorious for rather unremarkable things. They were classmates, so they at least knew each others' names, but this would be the first time they actually held a close conversation.

"I- I uh. I'm sorry about this morning and, well. All of that," he stutters, "I didn't know what— there's this— I don't... uh," he blanches, losing his thread of thought. "You look tired."

Rei groans, slumping against the wall and coming into a crouch, burying his face in his arms and knees.

"People seem to think I'd be easy to beat as long as it's not parkour-based, so they're all challenging me for the right to Kyoko," he says.

Tsuna nods. They weren't allowed to challenge him in anything sports-based either, that was the ground rule for Ninomiya Rei in general. "I've been watching the livestream. Blind Blackjack with the Card games club was really cool. Magic tricks and all."

"Don't remind me... seriously did that guy not think I would notice them signing out numbers behind me?"

Tsuna falls quiet, fussing with his limbs nervously. "Uh... you okay?"

He really wasn't. It was funny at first, and nothing was ever really too taxing on him, but after a hustle of the entire day, he ran out of energy to socialize. Plus, the smack to the head Hibari gave him still hurts.

Rei takes a full breath.

"I'm at my limit," he sighs. He gets up, swinging a little when the movement makes him dizzy. "I think I'm gonna call in sick for the rest of the day. Wanna walk me to the infirmary, Tsuna-kun?"

"Eh?" Tsuna yelps, "Ninomiya-kun, if you're really not feeling well, I think we should hurry—!"

"Please. Just Rei is fine."

"Rei-kun, that's not the problem here!"

Tsuna fusses immediately, holding Rei up to his feet, hands on his shoulders as he led him around like a train and its director. Rei chuckles warmly when Tsuna wails at everyone that runs up, insisting that 'no! Rei-kun's not available anymore! No more challenges!' as he steers them toward the infirmary.

Rei is very endeared by the sight.

"Kuma-sensei! Rei-kun's not feeling well!" Tsuna announces upon stepping into the room, "huh? Kuma-sensei's not here. Oh well then."

"It's okay, I'll just take the bed," Rei stretches out with a sigh, relieved that he got a nice escort to the infirmary. "Thanks, Tsuna-kun."

"No no, it's okay. Please take better care of yourself!" Tsuna lectures, finding the record book on the table and picking up the pen to write their names in. "Are you going to sleep? Should I call Yamamoto-kun or something?"

"I'll be fine!"

Tsuna sighs, coming to sit on the bed adjacent to Rei's.

Rei was already curling up comfortably into the pillow, looking much better than before. He'd gotten pale on the way, and now that they were in the cool and ventilated nurse's office, he was getting better.

Rei hugs the pillow, and Tsuna's eyes wandered, to where Rei was perusing his wrist, trailing the white birthmark looped around it like a band.

"Ah, by the way, Tsuna-kun," Rei turns to him, "me and Takeshi dating Kyoko was just a front. Kyoko's still super single and available."

Tsuna's face burns bright red. "Y- Y– Y??? Yuuh?? Wait so...??"

"Good night."

"No no no! Please! Explain that! Rei-kun!"

-

Tsuna sighs heavily, leaving the infirmary.

"Good going, Tsuna," Reborn says, and Tsuna screeches bloody murder, shooting back a whole yard in surprise. "A boss should always take care of their family."

"Fami— no!" Tsuna yelps, "you're not dragging him into this business!"

"But he's such a good catch," Reborn says. "As is that girl you have a crush on and the third piece of their puzzle. All good. They're not genuinely in a relationship, but we can skip the annoying steps and just make them all your harem to get this over with."

"STOP IT!"

-

"Today was hell," Rei says. "I hate you, Kyoko."

"That's too bad," Kyoko says, teasingly. "Are we breaking up?"

They're walking home now, blessedly late into the evening. The commotion's died down, and people are probably going to adapt to all this nonsense by tomorrow.

Until then, though, Takeshi walks them home with Rei on his back, Kyoko holding their bags and Takeshi's shinai. Rei broods into Takeshi's shoulder.

Rei grinds his teeth. "I want a divorce and I'm taking Takeshi with me!"

"I want to talk to a lawyer," Kyoko retorts. "We will discuss custody in court."

"...I'm the child in this relationship?" Takeshi asks, then laughs. "Now, now... get along, alright? Learn how to share."

Kyoko pouts, and Rei sulks. If Kyoko clung a little closer to them just to spite Rei, well, let's just say Rei buried his face further into the crook of Takeshi's nape, sneering at her.

"Yep, get along, just like that."

It was, in fact, more convenient for them to fake a relationship now. Fans would riot, but after that, confession incidents and unsolicited gifts and letters will surely decrease.

"This is not how I expected episode one to go," Rei whines. "Where has my peaceful life gone?"

He was going to stay out of it, as mob characters do, but then he went and caught all the attention Tsuna was supposed to get, he caught Reborn's interest, and here he was, step one to disaster.

"It'll be fun!" Takeshi says.

"I'm looking forward to the rest of the year!" Kyoko agrees.

And well— Rei's looking forward to it, too. Chaos ran in the blood of everyone in this town, and that means it's inevitably in his, too.
