Chapter Twelve: Doubt

~Little Tooth~

Chapter 12:

Doubt

-...-

The worst had yet to come...

They had slept through the whole night, their body heat keeping each other warm while the night was cold. They didn't dream, but they did have an acceptable amount of sleep. However, it had to be just as the sun was rising when Baby Tooth was woken up to the sound of scream and the feeling a cold, hard ground.

Her eyes flickered opened and she jumped to her feet, almost tripping over due to them being so weak. He head turned to where the horrible sound came from, and in front of her eyes, played out a scene she'd never forget.

"JACKSON!" She screamed, tears returning to her eyes.

She weakly ran towards Jackson, who was laying on the ground and being attacked by two older adults. They did not look homeless, but they did not look nice. They were hurting Jackson and Baby Tooth did not like to hear his screams. She ran over to Jackson, but she was too young to do anything. She tried to ignore the attackers and pulled Jackson away, but the men kept attacking the poor boy.

"Get out'a here, stupid brat!" One of the attackers laughed.

Baby Tooth frowned, using her dress to wipe some of the blood off of Jackson's forehead. He wasn't responding very well, which was the very opposite of good. As she tried her best to help, she began getting frustrated. Nothing was helping. Nothing.

"Hey! Go away or we'll get ya too!"

Baby Tooth stopped to stare at her best friend's body. He was breathing, but his eyes were too weak to open. He was awake, conscious, but too scared to stand up. If she didn't do anything, worse was to come. His clothes were torn and It looked like the attackers had landed a few good ones on him before she had awoken. The number of scars and scratches, bruising and bleeding areas. It was all horrible. On top of that, he probably didn't get a lot of sleep. He was probably hungry and cold too.

This angered Baby Tooth.

"You sad, little girl." They laughed.

Standing up, she turned to face those horrible humans. It was then she thought, she didn't have to play by the rules. She wasn't a kid. She wasn't even human. She was an immortal watcher and caring servant of one of the most powerful beings in the Moon's light. She was the daughter of memories. She was not just a friend of the one and only Guardians, but was part of the guardians as well. Without her and her siblings, the Tooth fairy would be nothing.

And she had only JUST realized this.

"You mad, little girl?" They snickered.

"Get out." She hissed in a dark tone.

"Oh, what a brave child." They laughed. "No, YOU get out before we kill you too!"

Baby Tooth was enraged that this scene was even still playing out. She ran without warning to the men and kicked one swiftly in between the legs. Yeah, she was using a human trick, but she'd learned it from the best. She didn't have magic this time. The man fell in pure agony.

"GET OUT!" She screeched.

"YOU LITTLE BI-"

Baby Tooth didn't hesitate to grab the other man, sinking her nails into his skin, and bite down on his hand. She sunk her teeth somewhere around his wrist so there wasn't that much mussel to protect him. She swore she heard something break and maybe a few veins pop. But her anger was too much for her to start felling guilty. Why should she!?

The men did not leave. So, turning around, she walked over to the brick wall and picked up some small rocks. She was tired of them. This shit had to end. She turned back around and started throwing them at the men. She aimed for their heads.

"Oh god!" One cried.

"That child is the devil!"

"Come on!"

They ran.

Baby Tooth dropped the rocks and saw Jackson. He was laying there. She ran to his side and placed her head to his chest. His heart beat was slow. She checked his pulse, for Alyss had taught her once, and nothing seemed good. She had to find help.

Fear began to replace her anger as she realized Jackson could be dying. She couldn't drag him anywhere, so she had to run for help. Her hands and legs began to shake but she did not cry. She got up and ran. Ran as fast as she possibly could.

She ran out of the alleyway and into the streets. It wasn't very busy, but there were cars and some people.

"WATCH OUT!"

Baby Tooth stopped, only to see she was in the middle of the road and a car was heading towards her. She could only stare as it came at her. She was then quickly pulled to the side and her thoughtless mind began to work again. The car had come to a stop and she turned to see a cop had grabbed her.

"I said watch out!"

Baby Tooth knew was a cop was, so started to pulled the man towards where she came. "S-SIR!"

"BABY TOOTH!"

Baby Tooth turned to see Oliver Time. He wasn't the one in the car that was about to hit her, but actually the one behind that car. He ran over, his face full of worry, concern, and parental anger. None of that scared Baby Tooth liked it would scare a normal child. Baby Tooth ran out of the cop's grasp. She ran towards the alleyway, looking back at Oliver and the cop.

"JACKSON IS DYING!" She screamed and ran for Jackson, the two men following.

When they found Jackson, he looked pale and just as bad as before. Baby Tooth watched as Oliver and the cop ran to the boy's side, checking heart beat and pulse and all that stuff.

"I'll call for back up." The cop said, standing up and reaching for a walkie-talkie that hung from his belt.

Oliver turned to Baby Tooth.

"Please..tell me what happened."

Baby Tooth slowly walked over and sat down on the cold ground. She looked up to see his emotional face. He was more shocked then she was.

"They hurt him. They wanted to kill him. I scared them off, but it was too late."

"Who is they?"

"These...these two adults in jackets and messy hair." Baby Tooth sniffed. "They made Jackson scream in pain and then would have hurt me too if I didn't do anything."

Oliver paused.

"Toothiana." His voice was weak. "I'm glad you found Jackson...but don't ever do that again."

Baby Tooth looked down in guilt.

"I could not sleep. I couldn't eat." He gulped. "If there is ever a next time, i'd stay up till dawn to help you look around the city."

The police and ambulance arrived a few moments later. Baby Tooth was taken in for questioning and all she was told was that Jackson was in the hospital, not dying. She was taken home. The rest of her day was spent in depression. For Oliver, he had many calls to the Orphanage as well as the police. This was not good day. This had to be worse then anything that had ever happened to Baby Tooth.

Worse then the nightmare attack...,Baby Tooth thought, her head resting on the kitchen table.

-...-

"They aren't sure who those men were, but they are looking out for anyone along the lines you described. Mrs. Overland and the others were informed about Jackson but I haven't heard much other then that they will handle his medical things."

Oliver sat across from Baby Tooth at the table. It was quiet, and very serious. Baby Tooth nodded and listened to very word, all of them paining her in some way.

"As for Jackson...well...he is alive..well...i can't lie...He was for a while..but he slipped into a coma. It seems that he'll live. He is under good care and overall his injuries are not horrific. If you had not stepped up and get help, he'd probably be gone." Oliver had a hard time speaking. "They don't know how long he'll be under, but it seems he'll come back sooner or later."

"..." Baby Tooth rested her head on the table, feeling horrible.

So Jackson was in a coma, and chances are she'd never hear from him again. His medical bills and his parental figures were the people of the Orphanage. Those men were still on the lose, but they probably still had broken wrists and what not. And Baby still didn't understand why she was told never to go back to Little Apple Orphanage. She trusts Jackson more then anyone, well anyone but her mother and Jack Frost, but what was so wrong with it? She loved it there. She had forgotten anything bad, if there was any. She had forgotten about Jackson's reaction to Norm and the yelling she had heard when Ms. Elizabeth had taught her to speak.

Later that night she went to her bedroom to sit at the window and watch the cold, night sky. Her window was opened so the wind could fly in.

Jeez, the wind didn't even recognize her. She knew that it too was a spirit that helped Jack fly. Wind was flying around Savannah and past her house, not even giving her a second look. The wind could, in a way, be a guardian too, right? It was like Jack's "servent". Wind was to jack as Baby Tooth was to Tooth. Right?

Speaking of Guardians, where were they when Jackson was dying? They protected children, right? Baby Tooth HATED thinking this, but her mind continued on. She was there, but where were the OFFICAL people who took care of the children of the world? Didn't MIM see anything? Didn't the wind? Why didn't they come? They...are supposed to protect the lives of children...

Baby Tooth came to tears as she thought the worst thing ever possible.

Were the guardians all just lies...?

-...-

Later that night, baby Tooth would notice a bunch of papers on Oliver's kitchen table.

She'd attend a human school soon.
