⋆        "𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 mean that the precinct is shutting down?" Oscar Winchester spoke, questioning his Captain. Oscar swore in his head, hating the voice he used to talk to his Captain, as it seemed like he was confused and fearful. Nonetheless, he looked over to his Captain, standing with a sad face, his hands creasing at the wrinkles on his uniform. The detectives who worked at the 78th precinct all stood around with mixed emotions, confused, upset, or nothing.

"They have redeemed our precinct as one of the few to be shut down. But, not to fear, we weren't the only ones to suffer the curse," the Captain spoke, trying to keep the mood upbeat and adding a joke to his words. But Oscar's observation caught him, seeing that the Captain's eyes were enough to say he had a ping of guilt inside him. Oscar's heart sank slightly, not wanting to see his face further. Sure, he was happy to get out of this hellhole of sexist workers and homophobes who had nothing better to do than terrorize him day in and day out. But it was where he solved one of the most significant cases the precinct had gotten since 2003. He didn't want to lose the one place that made him who he was now.

"What's going to happen to us? Do we get shipped off somewhere, or...?" One of the detectives spoke, and Oscar knew the question was hesitant. There were only two answers to the problem; the other precincts were the ones who got the choice to choose the best detectives and leave the worst to the scraps for the wolves to feast. The Captain didn't reply and just dismissed them to gather their things. Oscar overheard some mutters from one of the other detectives, claiming that the situation was bearable and easier to move on.

It just meant that they would have better jobs at better precincts, as the 78th precinct was decreasing in terms of crime rates, and Oscar should have seen the closure coming towards them. But instead, Oscar didn't understand why they weren't worried about this, and it just showed which detective didn't care about their job.

Oscar slumped―walked towards his desk, his energy draining with every step from stress and worry. His desk was somewhat clean and messy at the same time. There would usually be case papers scattered over the desk with forgotten pencils and rubber bands. There would sometimes be the loose notepad papers full of doodles when he was bored and the little police figure he used to distract the kids he had to interview.

Looking up, he noticed some people were already leaving with boxes. The Captain stood by the elevator to wish them good luck in the future. Oscar's heart suddenly pinched with disappointment; didn't he fight to stay? He shook that upsetting thought out and closed the book filled with his belongings. When Oscar walked towards his Captain, a ping of sadness waved over him like the previous feeling. He hadn't thought about where the Captain would go. Oscar then realized that his Captain would have to work in Public Relations, which he heard was a bit of a nightmare.

"Oscar? Hey buddy, I hope you get selected again. You have a great future of being a detective. I'll make sure to put the good word to the other precincts," the Captain said as he winked at him, but his voice was warbling. Oscar nodded; he could tell how unique the precinct was to him; it was his life.

"Thank you, sir, for giving me this opportunity," Oscar said quietly before shaking his hand; the nerves haunted his fingertips as he let go. His hands were cold, and he didn't know how to grasp the feeling restricting his throat. The Captain smiled, which Oscar knew was troubled, before nodding goodbye.

Oscar looked around for the last time before walking into the elevator alone.

⋆        "𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧! 𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗧, 𝗢𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗥, you got dismissed?" Liliana spoke to Oscar as he entered the kitchen, the smell of homemade cookies distracting him. He didn't want to face everything so quickly, so Oscar tried to avoid the question, but that didn't work as he got a smack on his arm. Oscar chuckled softly, quietly enjoying Liliana's annoyance as he reached out to grab a cookie off the baking tray.

"Excuse me? I'm talking to you; don't try to ignore me!" Liliana said as she hopped onto the breakfast bar's seat underneath the kitchen counter. Oscar sighed as he took a bite out of his cookie, embracing the warmth of the cookie and the melted cookies already spreading over his taste buds. Liliana glared at him with an evil look, and Oscar sighed as he quickly swallowed the cookie.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, so what? The Captain said I was one of the best detectives, and I am most likely going to be hired again by another precinct," Oscar said as he readjusted his glasses, trying to distract himself. Instead, he fiddled with his fingers, picked at the hangnails, and sighed softly. Liliana raised her eyebrow, not wanting to admit that she was worried about her big brother.

"The captain also got married three times, but go off, I guess," Liliana said before smiling and grabbing one of the cookies. Oscar couldn't help but smile at Liliana's attempt to make light of the situation. However, before Oscar replied to her statement, he heard his head move towards the door that Oscar's brother, Kaden, had opened.

"Shame, Liliana! It looks like you owe me twenty bucks!" Kaden said with a sly smile, their hand━holding many papers. Oscar looked confused, but Liliana, on the other hand, was surprised, and she was speechless. Avery raised his eyebrow with a smirk, and Liliana crossed her arms.

"How did you even manage to get ten numbers?" Liliana said, finally not speechless as she was confused about how she lost the bet. Oscar was standing on the other side of the kitchen counter, astounded by what he heard. He crossed his arms, waiting for either one of them to answer him, but when none did, he finally spoke, breaking the awkward silence.

"I'm sorry. What numbers? What are you two talking about? Should I know something that you are leaving out of this conversation?" Oscar said, rambling, trying to find the answers. He looked over to his siblings as they finished their bickering. Kaden nudged Liliana, a sign that she should explain, but Liliana sighed, looking over at Kaden, who groaned and shrugged their shoulders.

"Liliana bet me twenty bucks to see if I could get ten numbers from different people within a time limit. If I won, she would give me ten bucks, and if I lost―" Kaden started to explain, but Liliana closed her eyes and started to fake snore, which made Kaden stop speaking. Liliana giggled, her hand covering her mouth as she tried to stop, which only made Kaden cross his arms.

"I think Oscar knows what betting is, Kaden," Liliana said once she had finished her giggle outburst. Kaden responded with an eye roll and surrendered with their hands in the air. Oscar stood between them, looking at both of them with tired eyes. Before Liliana smirked, Kaden turned around and glared at her.

"You shut your mouth!"

"Hey! Enough; we don't need any of this bickering right now," Oscar spoke; his voice was surprisingly calm after the events that happened a couple of hours ago. He still didn't take in the information that he was no longer working for the 78th precinct. He didn't need more stress added to his platter. Being the eldest, Oscar had to ensure that no one got hurt or worse. It was a handful, but he still loved them all the same. He was ready to deal with the cards even if he knew there would be days when he had to let them go.

"Oscar, are you going to tell Kaden?" Liliana spoke, her voice changing from boldness to a quiet demeanour, and Oscar knew why. He also felt nervous, his heart pounding against his ribcage as his eyes fluttered to the counter, not wanting to make eye contact. The family knew that out of the family members, Kaden was the most unexpected in terms of reactions.

"Tell me what?" Kaden said, and Oscar hadn't realized that Kaden was waiting for Oscar to respond, but an awkward silence remained in the room instead. Oscar started to fiddle with his fingers again, but there were no hangnails to rip this time.

"Um... I got― um..." Oscar became a stuttering mess; he didn't know why. It was his brother, who he grew up with, but it was Kaden at the same time. He didn't know what would happen and whether the conversation would take a turn.

"Ugh, must I do everything for you? Oscar's precinct got shut down," Liliana finally spoke, standing up for Oscar, but he could sense the overconfidence in her voice. It seemed that Liliana noticed it as well, as she returned to the quiet demeanour that she had previously. Oscar swallowed his fear as he saw that Kaden's eyes revealed ablaze fires. Oscar didn't know what would happen, but he hoped he wouldn't get his head bitten off by Kaden.

"Wait... Oscar, what does she mean by the shutdown? Did your precinct get shut down...?" Kaden spoke, their eyebrows furrowed as he questioned Oscar. Oscar was taken aback by Kaden, whose voice was strangely very calm. Maybe it wasn't the fires that were ablaze in their eyes but the ocean's clear waters.

"I know that face; that's your idea face. It's kinda scary―" Liliana spoke to Kaden, who chuckled a little, but he maintained her eye contact with Oscar. Oscar shrugged, trying not to get his siblings involved with his situation. As Oscar was about to speak, Kaden shushed him, making Oscar sigh and fold his arms, his muscles tense.

"You do know I work at the 99th precinct? I can put in a recommendation to the Captain; you can work with me!" Kaden said with a smile, folding his arms at their idea. Liliana snickered at Kaden's happy―go―lucky attitude before being smacked on the wrist by Kaden.

"I'm just going to sleep on that idea; I'll see how I feel about it in the morning..." Oscar finally replied; his voice was low, but he had reasons. First, he didn't want to give up on his detective dreams, knowing he had already given up on his acting dreams once. He didn't want to give false hope to himself or his siblings. Before Kaden could argue against the objection, Oscar sat down and looked through the pizza menus. He just wanted to avoid the conversation now, his mind becoming stressed whenever he tried to work something out. Kaden began to speak again, but Liliana smacked him on the arm before Kaden got the hint and left Oscar alone to his thoughts.

⋆        𝗜𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 than usual in the morning when Oscar woke up. He groaned as he raised his hand to cover his eyes from the sunlight shining through his window. The blinds were slightly opened, and Oscar noticed that he had left the window open, which explained why there was a crack in the blinds. The breeze hit Oscar's skin as he sat up slowly in his bed, the goosebumps appearing on his skin, and he shivered. He yawned before finding a note left by Kaden, and he reached out to grab it.

Oscar grabbed his glasses and could recognize the neat handwriting as Kaden's. he squinted his eyes to read it, the sleep still in the corners of his eyes. The note, as follows, said; Woke up earlier to drop off Liliana at school, decided to leave you sleeping since you deserve it. The leftover pizza is in the fridge. K x. Oscar yawned as he finished reading the note while rubbing his eyes, realizing it was close to nearly eleven o'clock.

Oscar groaned, trying to get out of his bed, before falling onto the floor, hurting his elbow on the hardwood floor. He winced, struggling to fully wake up to get to the kitchen, his stomach straining to get his attention. As he finally brought himself to get up and checked if there were any injuries on himself, Oscar walked into the kitchen. The scent of pizza from Sal's pizzeria remained in the air from last night. Oscar couldn't help but feel more hungry than when he woke up.

After having a few leftover pizza slices and getting dressed for the weather ahead, Oscar thought it would have been relaxing if he had walked around Central Park. So he grabbed the keys to lock the apartment and took out his phone to text Kaden that he was going to the park. It was close by, and Oscar was glad it was a place with memories he wanted to shelter from the pain.

Growing up in New York wasn't all pleasant, especially after being born in Queens, but some days were just as beautiful as the next. Oscar could never forget when his mother took him to the park to go onto the swings. Kaden would have just been born, and Oscar would have tried to get his mother's attention at the time. Oscar missed those moments and had always wished he could go back in time to improve things.

To prevent anything wrong from happening to his family.

Sitting on one of the park benches facing one of the best views overlooking a pond, he couldn't help but wonder if things had changed. He sighed, clasping his hands together as he watched a line of ducks following the mama duck, and Oscar smiled in awe. It was suitable to forget the evil thoughts, but without a doubt, there was still a chance for the ideas to slip through the cracks of his mind. He would have wished for a miracle, a string of hope, a chance at being a better person than he was. Instead, he could finally remember his last time with his mother. Oscar shook the sad thought away from him.

Before he dozed off, the sun shone on him, warming his arms; he could sense someone walking toward him. A tall figure stood before him as he opened his eyes, creating a shadow over Oscar. Oscar stood up to face the man, who seemed familiar but couldn't quite put a name to the face.

"I'm Captain Raymond Holt; Kaden told me I could find you here," the man spoke, and Oscar nodded, seeing that his voice strangely resembled a robot from Kaden's favourite genre of movies. Oscar realized this man was the Captain of the 99th precinct, where Kaden worked. Oscar knew to make a good impression, especially since they had just met, and he didn't want to start on a sour note. Oscar quietly muttered to himself, hoping he looked at least presentable but not too desperate.

"Oh, I'm Winchester. Oscar Winchester, pleasant to meet you, sir," Oscar said as he smiled, ensuring he had a firm handshake. Captain Holt looked at Oscar, who had a shine in his eye, making it impossible to miss it. Captain Holt nodded to himself, which confused Oscar, but he hoped it was acceptable; he could never tell as his expressions were still the same as when he first met him.

"Let's walk, shall we, Winchester? We'll talk about this job opening at the 99th precinct," Captain Holt finally said, breaking the silence that was building up between the two of them. His response caused Oscar to be taken back out of surprisement. Oscar then smiled as he nodded and followed Captain Holt, mimicking his steps as they walked side by side.

"Of course, Captain."
