Seeing his face again was something out of a dream, or a nightmare, I couldn't decide which.
My father smiled ever so slightly, and his hand brushed against my face. I blinked in confusion, actually it was probably shock. It was lowering my capability to process things. I could be hallucinating right now and I probably wouldn't even know. Did I want it to end? Again, I wasn't sure.
"I'm sorry." He rasped out, I barely understood what he was saying.
"Wh-what?" I stammered, (I hadn't stuttered in years), "have you been here this entire time?"
He looked so old, with the hair on his head was so white it was glowing and he had the complexion of granite. I guess we had both grown up. He nodded and I swallowed, still trying to process this.
The remaining slime peeled off of Gorbachav like glue, cast it off of him and stumbled away. I caught him in and helped him stumble away.
"Xanthos." He rasped out again. "I'm sorry."
"You keep saying that." I pursed my lips. "I've already told you that I forgive you."
"No... Tenebris... I've kept it weak but that thing is still alive. I have to..."
He started to pulled away from me and I unconsciously tightened my grip on him.
"What? No! We have to get you some medical help you can't fight in your state-"
"Xanthos." He dug his feet in the ground. "I'm sorry."
To my horror he pushed me to the ground in one quick move. I pushed myself up of course but then by that time it was to late. With one flick of his wrist, he set up a nice little force field that would keep me out for thirty minutes tops. It was just enough time for him to get himself killed.
"No!" I yelled at him, his back never turned.
Gorbachav straightened his posture and cracked his knuckles. On the ground in front of him the now very pathetic looking pile of slime began to twitch and make itself a new form. It was something that vaguely resembling a feline again, though this time it was not nearly as massive. Tenebris let out a pathetic growl.
By this time all of Coniurantum was close bough to marvel at this spectacle. The final war between two dying creatures.
Gorbachav spread his fingers wide and reached out one hand towards Tenebris head. The monster snapped it's teeth done on his hand and I watched as he cried out, but then placed his other hand on Tenebris head. It groaned as a soft glow built up beneath his palm. My father and the monster both creamed out in agony as Tenebris' teeth clenched down in his hand and hose white cracks spread throughout the beasts' head. It's eyes finally glowed pure white, as it burned up from the inside.
I couldn't physical reach out to them. The area adapted it's own soft muffled deafness as I watched the two entities tear each other apart. There was no sound beyond the soft humming of the light lashing out from my father's palm.
Then amazingly, it was all over just like that. One big final flash of white light. We all watched at Tenebris was eaten away, mouth gaped open in pure terror. There was nothing left. It was finally gone.
You could hear the whole forest let out a deep sigh.
My father's body lay shimmering on the bloodstained grass. I ran to him, and kneeled down. It didn't take very long to confirm was worst fears. He was dying. He had that light in his eyes, the light of a satisfied man.
"This is a much better way to go." He sighed.
"No..." I clutched at his hand. "Come on... I just got you back."
He coughed violently. "Ah son. There is a point of no return, I've done horrible, horrible things. I'm okay with this."
"I'm not."
He smiled. "I know. That's okay."
He reached out to touch my face again and I let him. Under his breath he sung that familiar lullaby. Stay in the light my son. Even when darkness won. You're a joyful glow. The evil will always go. Stay in the light my son. Born under a midnight sun. My love for you, never undone. Stay in the light my son. I felt tears roll down my face and hit the grass.
There was someone else here now two, another form softly faded into existence. My mom didn't say a word as she reached down and grabbed his other hand and squeezed it gently. Gorbachav's eyes widened, and I watched as he almost seemed to grow younger.
"I'm so proud of you." My mom whispered into me ear.
"We both love you so much." He added.
"Love you too." I chocked out.
Then they both faded away. I sat there on my knees and whipped away my tears. Then I stood up, and turned back towards my people, who were staring wide eyed and awaiting news. I let myself smile and lifted my fists into the eye with a cry of glory.
"Tenebris is dead!"
