The Real Me
The first time Ladybug visited Adrien was on Christmas.
As Marinette, she had tried to give him her present (a beanie and jumper to go with 'Gabriel Agreste's' scarf), but every time she tried, either Chloe or her nerves would get the best of her.
So while she was at home sulking, she had a brilliant idea.
Give the gift to him as Ladybug.
Ignoring Tikki-The Miraculous are only supposed to be used to protect the city- she quickly transformed and leapt away.
With her Ladybug speed, what would have taken Marinette half-an-hour took Ladybug a minute. Hesitantly, she crept up to Adrien's window.
He was still awake, staring at the picture of his mom on his table. (I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a picture of his mum on his table, but whatevs.)
Ladybug quietly knocked on the window.
Adrien's head shot up, his eyes landing on Ladybug. His cheeks had a pink tint.
His eyes widened when he saw Ladybug shivering.
He shot up, hurriedly making his way to the window, and forcefully opening it and practically shoving Ladybug in. Then, he gently closed it, and turned to face Ladybug.
"H-hi Ladybug." Adrien said nervously. "What brings you here?"
Ladybug giggled softly. Adrien's cheeks steadily grew more red. This went unnoticed by Ladybug, who was as oblivious as Adrien when it came to crushes.
"W-well...I'm here more for a friend, really. Marinette. You know her?" Ladybug asked, desperately groping for information about what her crush thought of her.
"Marinette? Yeah, I know her. She's my friend...well at least I think of her like that. I'm pretty sure she doesn't like me."
Ladybug squealed internally. Adrien thought Marinette was her friend! Sure, only a friend, but that would definitely improve. But why would he think she didn't like him?
"Why do you think that?"
"Well...whenever I try to talk to her she always stammers. Or she just runs away."
"Maybe it's because she likes you."
Adrien smiled softly.
"Maybe."
He shook his head.
"But enough of my problems. Why are you here again?"
"Marinette. You see...she wanted to give this to you. As a christmas present! But she didn't get to so...I'm here for her!"
"She...she got this for me? Tell her thanks, please!"
"I course I- Adrien?"
He had a puzzled expression on his face.
"You talk to Marinette?"
Ladybug was panicking internally, but forced herself to remain calm.
"Yeah. She's cool. What, you don't think so?"
"No! She's really nice! It's just, I thought you agreed, and Chat Noir agreed as well, to not talk to any civilians. I mean, like, form friendships with them inside the mask."
Ladybug cursed herself. She had completely forgotten about that. She and Chat had promised not to make friends with anyone in superhero form. It was too dangerous. But only she and Chat knew about that, so how did Adrien?
"How did you know?"
It was Adrien's turn to panic. He had completely forgotten that only he and Ladybug had heard that promise! So he said the first thing that came to mind.
"Chat told me."
Ladybug's eyebrows rose. Chat and Adrien? Friends? That seemed as likely as Ladybug willingly kissing Chat.
"You two are friends?" she said in a disbelieving tone.
Adrien suddenly grew assertive. Which made sense, since he was Chat Noir.
"Why not? Your friends with Marinette. Why can't Chat be friends with me?"
Adrien was mortified. Why had he said that? She'd probably hate him now.
Similiarly, Ladybug was flustered. Adrien was right, of course.
"No, I was just...surprised. You two are a lot different."
"You would be surprised how much we're alike."
"Huh?" Ladybug asked before she could stop herself. "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that! It's your business. I'm really sor-"
She was interrupted by Adrien's finger on her lips, a charming smile on his face.
She just knew she was a human traffic light.
Adrien was ecstatic. He had made his lady blush! He had made his Lady blush!
"It's okay Ladybug. Let's just say that Chat and I...share a few problems."
Normally, Ladybug would have been wondering about the problems in Chat's life. She would have, but for the fact that Adrien still had not removed the finger from her lips.
He seemed to realise it when she did, and automatically took it off, blushing, and muttering a string of apologises.
Ladybug simply smiled (and blushed, but that wasn't relevant.)
"It's okay."
Adrien looked at her and blushed back.
A beep filled the room.
"I have to go. Here's your gift!"
And with that, Ladybug left.
The next time was when Adrien caught the flu. Marinette, being the generally caring (and obsessive) person she was, hurried to Adrien's house as Ladybug to give him the notes from today's lesson.
She knocked on the window.
Adrien was in his bed, covered in blankets, watching on his TV (most likely anime, but he turned it off when he saw Ladybug.)
He opened the window tentatively.
"What are you doing here? You might catch my cold. And then no-one would be here to protect Paris."
"I'll be fine. Marinette was worried, so she asked me to give you today's notes."
"Tell her thank you. She's very considerate. But I really don't want you catching my cold."
"I told you Adrien, it's ok. Besides, you must be bored here. Do you want to play a game?"
"Sure!"
Ladybug's visits never stopped. Sometimes, she was delivering something for Marinette. Other times, she came to talk. Adrien was ecstatic. The girl of his dreams, willingly spending her own time just to talk to him! But the more she thought about it, the more troubled he got. Why wasn't she like this to Chat Noir? Why did she only care about Adrien? Eventually, he asked.
"What do you think of Chat Noir?"
He and Ladybug were watching a movie. Right now, it was on a boring bit, and both him and Ladybug weren't really watching, preferring to talk to each other.
"Well, I guess he's a good friend. And he's helpful in defending Paris. But he's kind of annoying with his lame puns and flirts. Can't he tell I'm not interested?"
Adrien had a moment of clarity.
Turns out he's not that oblivious after all. Especially when it involves Ladybug.
He thought about how Alya acted around Nino. Not nervous, but cautious. And she had this...aura that told you that she liked him. Maybe she hadn't realised it yet, but she would.
He sensed that from Ladybug.
Ladybug liked him. As in, Adrien him. But she didn't like Chat Noir. Frankly, she thought he was annoying.
Adrien didn't know what to feel. Happy that his lady liked him? Not really, since Ladybug didn't like him for him. Anger at his civilian self for being so charming? Sadness that Ladybug couldn't like him as Chat?"
He settled for feeling depressed.
He could feel his eyes filming over.
"Adrien?" Ladybug asked, concerned. She could see his eyes had filled with tears. She had no idea what she said.
"N-nothing. It's just that this part i-is really sad."
Adrien buried his face into his pillow.
Ladybug looked at the TV.
The main character was hugging her mother who had miraculously recovered from cancer.
That was not sad.
Ladybug had no idea what was wrong.
She willed Tikki to make her earring beep.
A beep filled the air.
"Sorry. I have to go."
Adrien's head moved slightly in the pillow.
Ladybug took a deep breath. She needed to find out what was wrong.
"Can I come over tomorrow?"
"I have a photoshoot." Was the muffled reply.
"Okay." Ladybug zipped away.
As she was yo-yoing to the bakery, she knew she had done something wrong.
Because according to her extremely accurate timetable, Adrien didn't have a photoshoot tomorrow.
It was time for Marinette to investigate.
The next day at school, Marinette had been stealthily following Adrien all day. Miraculously, she hadn't tripped once. Maybe her good luck was working for a change.
Right now she was at the library (behind a bookshelf), listening to Nino and Adrien talk. She started to drift off. She was nearly asleep when she heard Nino say,
"So what is Ladybug doing at your place?"
Marinette didn't need to see Adrien to know he was blushing.
"Nothing. She comes around sometimes. Besides, how do you know?"
"Alya. Duh. Wait...Ooooh, does my man have a crush? Wait again... does Ladybug have a crush?"
"Nino!" Adrien hissed.
"We're just friends!"
Marinette blinked away the tears in her eyes. Just friends? Nothing more, nothing else? She steeled herself. She could have a mental breakdown later. Right now, she was listening.
"Anyway, don't you have that project with Alya?"
"Ohhh yeah dude! Gotta split!" Nino left in a hurry, not wanting to face Alya's wrath.
Slowly, Marinette peeked out from behind the bookshelf.
Adrien was standing there, alone, with an incredibly sad expression on his face. Marinette wanted nothing more than to go up to him and hug him, but she was on a mission, so she kept quiet.
What she saw next made it really hard to keep quiet.
Out of Adrien's jacket (top? Something? I don't know what it's called.) flew a miniature cat that looked suspiciously like a kwami.
But it couldn't be a kwami. It just couldn't.
Until it talked.
"What's the matter, Adrien? You got the girl of your dreams. She likes you. You like her. Perfect fairytale. All it needs is cheese."
"You don't get it Plagg."
"What? She likes you. End of story."
"But that's the thing. She doesn't. She likes Adrien. She doesn't love the real me."
"She doesn't love Chat Noir."
And with that, Adrien sighed, and walked away.
Marinette, on the other hand, was far too gobsmacked to do anything.
Adrien was Chat Noir. Chat Noir was Adrien.
But what did he mean by the love her thing?
And why was he upset yesterday?
She ran over everything they said yesterday. And she facepalmed. She really was stupid.
"Can't he tell I'm not interested?"
She must have really hurt him. She imagined what it would be like to know that the love of your life didn't love you for you.
And the sad thing was, Adrien was right.
She loved Adrien.
She didn't love Chat Noir.
A/N:Yes, I updated. Yay! I had time today so...
I don't really like Ladrien. I don't know if this reflects in my writing. I don't think this will have a part 2. It feels like it ended here.
No idea what the next one will be! It's a surprise!
