Chapter 1 Valley of Shadows

There was nothing around. My earth was empty and burning. The air was dry and filled of burning streams of heat that suffocated me. I felt as if I couldn't breathe, yet I could. My throat, like the desert surrounding the moving van, was dry and impossible to water. I laid on the rusty ground grasping my sides thinking of the coldest water buried in the deepest part of the ice chest...even my thoughts were lulling me into a false state.

If I sleep, my pain will take over and I will wither. Dying of thirst- dehydration, a pitiful death.

Thirst...I'm burning everywhere.

"Don't look good Mike," a far-off voice muttered. "Money ain't good. Barely...live...man."

"Bull...any type of fanger is-..."

"See man! P...rabbit or something."

"Fan...animal bl...We don't...-ime to stop."

Footsteps brought a light weighted man forward. A hand brushed my face. "She's burning up man. Vamps are cold. It's wrong."

"...wrong with it! It's new."

"Michael, she's gotta drink something! This is five hundred K we're talking about here- in the least! If she dies..."

Their voice went distant my head, that I held at a painfully upwards. My position slowly fell to the rusty floor and I bent in as my weak body curled in. Breathing and staying awake were the only goals of my body.

Is this how I die? I first thought that when I was attacked outside my mother's shop...now I ask again. Am I going to die? The feeling I had in my legs started fading the more I counted my breaths. Soon, I lost all feeling. Forget my body, the only thing I could feel now was heat pressing down on my face, a burning force pressing down on my throat.

Apparently, this is how I'll go...maybe I lived for nothing after-.

"Dump her."

I smiled to a faint thought of my mother seeing me on my death bed. "N-," my throat burned- Nothing's all daisies is it now?

I flinched and slightly craned my head. My smile faded as a flaring feeling of pain shot up my spine and my entire body withered in pain. The pain rested in my throat and dry mouth, a cold liquid rested on my lips. All feeling in me rested on this...this...

I licked it and it spread across my tongue, it had no taste...like it was a tasteless liquor, that I craved more of.

I cried as I reached forward and found the source of it. More. I grabbed what was an arm and found the liquor simply dripping. I caught it and chased it to its spawning, I licked and licked and- the feeling of this ointment-cure to my thirst-need.

"Bite."

Under the simple order, I reared up and harshly bit into the flesh of the arm and sucked with enough power to bring the being down to its knees. I drank and drank to quench the impossible desert entirely comprised of sand.

"Enough."

More.

I kept drinking and drinking. I was determined to completely full myself. It now had a taste to it. I had to...I had to identify it and then enjoy it. I must get drunk off of the flavor of...old cherries, bitter but full of taste.

"I said enough, you will kill the boy."

M-o-r-e.

"Enough!"

A hand grasped my shoulder and forcibly pulled me from the being. I was dragged back a couple of feet and my eyes flashed open wildly. My sight was set on the man crippled on the ground with a sheet of blood sprayed across him and the stone floor.

"Messy eat-."

I pulled back and eyed a tall being next to me. It was a man in an expensive black suit with a stern, chiseled face. I met eyes with him and his bold brown eyes glared into a bright red color. I glared even harder and stood boldly.

"Viktor," a voice near called.

The man raised a hand calmly. "You are under my command, you will obey me. You cannot nor will not over power me."

I lowered my head and hissed at the man, exposing my teeth and from it erupted a set of pointy fangs. My eyes set sight on the man's throat.

Nothing I did anymore was under my control. I felt like something else was controlling me. I felt urges like I was some animal.

"Viktor, please. Let me take care-."

"No, I will show this Fledgling her place." The man turned to me fully. "You take care of the human." He smiled. "Attack, so I may so you my power, Newborn."

I hissed again. I did not move. I would not fall to the trap of this man. A way out is what I need. I fought the urges to challenge him and forced myself to think of a what out.

I raised my right foot and stomped it down behind me and put myself in a defensive pose. From what I heard of the echo, the sound traveled through the room. Somehow, I picked up the movement of the sound and how it continued to echo through an open door leading to an open area... from which leads toward an outsi-.

The man made and offensive trick and I slid back in avoidance of his touch. From my new position of his left, I struck him with a kick to pull his balance and set me on my direction towards the bend that led to the open door.

With immense power, I dashed around the bend and directly into the cluttered, but open room. My head snapped towards a doorway that led into a brightly lit area. In it there was a partially open door that slid open to reveal a thick forest bathed in the sun light. I pushed it open and slid through the door into the twenty foot stretch of prison to safety.

The moment I was in full stride out, a scorching heat full out struck my left side and brought me in full disarray. I collapsed and withered as the burning felt like a cluster of lit cigarettes burning my skin. The more I crumpled in pain, the more it covered with far more intensity.

"Painful isn't it."

I can't move. I can't move. I can't feel.

I moved my feet to stand but I fell to the ground in complete pain. I screamed as I tried to block the intense light from me, but only caused further damage to my open hands. Even through my long sleeve, I felt the rays

"It's a new weakness of yours." The man stepped from the doorway and slowly walked to me and cloaked me in his shadow. "It means you shouldn't walk into the sunlight little Newborn."

"Please!" I hissed curling up in the center of his shadow. I looked up toward the forest. It was meters away and I could make it.

"Ah, still thinking about it? Let me step out of your way then." He stepped back and put my left leg in direct sunlight.

"No!" I screamed.

"Then get up and get back in the building!" He grabbed me by my throat and threw me forward into the shadow of the building, where I quickly slipped in. "Try it again if you want. I'm always down to see a bloodsucker burn."

Bloodsucker?

"Viktor," we both turned toward a slender red haired man with a laid back attitude. His dull black eyes passed me as he looked to the big man behind me. "It's ready..." He looked at me and I tensed. He turned his head and sneered. "Already killing the new blood?"

Viktor smiled and passed by me. "Tried to escape by trees, ignores the sun."

The red haired one looked at me. "Lien won't like this. Of all there you bring..." He raised his hands and shook his head. "I'm sure Ameth'll need me soon." He eyed Viktor before left the room.

"Any more acting up will get you booked in the first class room called The Vault. Nice and comfy in there for vermin like you. Come. I gotta take you," he grabbed my arm and I immediately grabbed it and shoved it off me. I hissed and took steps back again.

"Aggressive again? Can't you see I'm bored of you? Come here or I will drag you-." He lunged, and I dodged, striking his balance with a swift and painless kick. "Vermin!" He swiped for me and cut my face with a sharp blade. It lightly, yet painfully, cut my left cheek. It completely wrecked me, and it gave enough time for the man to grab me and drag me out of the room. I struggled for my release, but he let go of me before I managed.

I was tossed away from him onto a painful, cold floor. I took too much time studying my new ground before I could be offensive. A door shut between us and I found myself trapped in a cold cube room with a single ten foot long window five feet in height.

"Out!" I snarled incoherently. "OUT!" I dashed forward and managed all force in a swing at the window, it didn't show any affliction.

Again, the new nature I had urged me into fighting. It wasn't me Even though I kept telling myself not to do it I couldn't stop.

I put my hands on the window and two to three inch long nails grew from my finger tips and scratched at the glass. "Now...I wa-," my voice subsided and a deep snarl overtook me.

Horrified at myself I was silent as I looked at the dark gray talons. What was I? I would have never done this before? My heart was beating so quickly and I could feel the intensity of my anger on a whole new level. The blood running through me burned as I glared at the man. My instincts were telling me to fight. I was in terrible danger.

In full out attacks, I swiped-punched-tore at the glass that didn't move. It swiped at the metal door and it didn't show massive damage. I felt scratches. That was the only mark I left. With that much damage I was doing more to myself. My fingers were bleeding- no, not bleeding. My fingers looked like I just ran my hand on asphalt during a hundred degree summer.

"It's impossible Newborn. It's The Vault for a reason."

My eyes burned and glared at Viktor, everything turned all shades of red. I snarled and exposed my...sharp teeth- fangs again. I launched into another furry of attacks. Even the pain spreading from my fingers to hand didn't stop me. If I didn't get out I would die.

Viktor turned his back to me. "It doesn't work like that." In a second he vanished. He simply went poof into the air. Literally with a small cloud of smoke, I was alone in the darkness of the prison with only a simple candle light flickering from a wall opposite of the metal cube.

"OUT!" I screamed pounding on the glass. "LET ME OUT!"
