Alma was looking at her little granddaughter, who was looking back at her.
Earlier that day, she noticed Mirabel missing at the breakfast, Julieta said she checked on her and that her daughter was still sleeping. If that wasn't weird, as Mirabel never slept late, not even when sick, later on, Alma caught Julieta whispering with her husband and daughters. She wasn't sure, what it meant, but she did caught words "feels small", "three years", "doesn't want anyone to know".
After that, the curiosity raised inside of the eldest Madrigal, so she decided to see that for herself.
And that what lead her in this situation.
"Abuela!" Mirabel giggled, jumping up to Alma, to which her eyes widened, but a smile still made it's way on her face.
"Hola, Mirabel." The woman said, hugging the girl back. "Your Mamá said somebody feels small today. Can you tell me, who it is?"
The girl nodded, before showing on herself.
"You?" Alma raised her eyebrow, as she looked Mirabel over.
For sure, her dress wasn't one, she would wear everyday, but teal, embroidered with butterflies of all colors, as well as knee-length socks. No shoes.
That outfit would be a perfect fit for a small child, but not a teenage girl.
"Ya! Me!" Mirabel nodded, smiling brightly. "'m three!"
Three? Is that what Julieta meant by "three years"? Alma thought to herself, as she was still watching Mirabel closely. Hm... now that's something new... but who says it's got to be a bad thing..?
Well... if Mirabel felt herself as a child... maybe it could also mean they'd get a chance to re-build their relationship? Could it mean they had a second chance?
"Well, Mirabel..." Alma started, getting the girl's attention. "What are you doing here, all alone? It's not safe for somebody that little to stay alone for such a long time. How about we you and I go downstairs?"
Mirabel shook her head.
"Really? Why not, Mariposita?"
"Dunno. Just wanna 'tay here." Mirabel said, starting to play with her fingers.
Alma chuckled slightly.
"Alright then, Corazón. Would you like you and I cuddle up, so I can tell you a story about your Mamá?"
"Mamí?" Mirabel asked, her eyes sparkle with interest and wonder.
"Sí, cariña. A story about your Mamí"
Mirabel nodded her head rapidly, as she pulled Alma to her bed, laying down on her knees. The woman laughed over her granddaughter's excitement, taking a family book (thankfully Mirabel had a copy in her room, she loved to keep besides her bed) in her hand, opening page on her triplets' childhood.
Once in awhile, Alma looked over at Mirabel, who was still fascinated by story behind each picture in it. A smile played on her face, as she promised herself to not let Mirabel ever feel way she did before. Not now. Not ever.
This was her second chance with this precious little girl. And she will not blow it up, like she did with the Miracle.
