Chapter 3
Thud! My back slammed against the wall. I rushed forward and grappled the man. I kicked the back of his knee, toppling him to the ground. He groaned, grabbed my wrist and flipped me so my back connected with the ground.
"Good afternoon, Agent," he said, holding my wrists in place, a sly grin on his stubbled face. He got up, pulling me with him.
"I'm not an agent,......uh........yet," I say as I manage to headbutt him and brace my arm under his chin in a headlock. "I have a six month probation and a psych eval."
He laughed, a deep, rich sound as he escaped my feeble grapple, "You're lucky. I have six years probation and oh........" He started counting his fingers sarcastically, "about a thousand or so psych evals."
"Yeah, the Soldat wasn't exactly the most reliable of characters. I know he's not who you are, prețioasa mea scorțișoară, but..........they worry..."
"I know they worry, and I know why, but it still hurts the way I can tell they don't trust me. The suspicious glances, just waiting for me to snap. Do you know how hard it is to not trust your own body? To feel trapped, hated, even?" Bucky slid down the nearest wall and buried his head in his arms.
"OF COURSE I DO!" I shouted. " I would slide across my bedroom in my socks, and my breakers would trip. If it rained, no one could touch me. IT WAS RAINING ON MY FIRST DATE, AND MY BOYFRIEND TRIED TO KISS ME! HE HAD TO BE RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL!" I sat down beside him. "He died there," I whispered, feeling tears, hot and wet, run down my face, my throat struggling to contain the swelling lump. He moved to hug me. I tensed up. "Please don't. I don't want to hurt you" I could feel the air crackling around me and the training room lights flicker menacingly, reminding me of why I hate this gift.
"Don't worry. It's just a little static. Nothing I can't handle."He tightened his embrace, and we stayed like that for nearly an hour.
"Frumusetea mea roscata, wake up." Bucky whispered, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. "The Director wants to see you."
I gulped. "Would you come with me please?"
"To the ends of the earth." He smiled.
We walked up to Fury's office, the menacing aura tying knots in the stomach. We opened the door, and there he stood, with a file in his hand. With a grimace, he tossed the manila folder onto the table. "What is the meaning of this?" he barked.
