Todoroki’s pov
I dashed out of the house as fast as I could. I didn’t mind the throb pounding in my head underneath the layered bandages wrapped on my eye. Because the burning feeling in my chest was aching harder.
I hate him! That bastard! It’s his fault mom is gone! It’s his fault I’m like this!
It’s all his fault!
I didn’t notice where I was until I tripped on a rock.
Curse these short legs…
I look around for a place to sit because my knee was bleeding now and found that an empty seat on a swing set was my only option. I got off the ground and limped towards the swing, sniffling my runny nose from all the crying I did earlier.
“Hello!” a honey-sweet voice chirped from the swing next to me.
Turning my head to see who the voice belonged to, I lock eyes with a little girl about my age showing off a toothy grin.
“My name is Izuku!” her wings on her back, which I just noticed, flung her back and forth so she didn’t have to kick her feet. The pink frilly dress and bows tying her pigtails swung with her.
“...I’m Shoto..” I responded softly. I didn’t think she heard me until I heard her giggle.
“What’s wrong? You sound so quiet!” she looked over to me once again and took me all in. As she eyed my form she gasped at my knee bleeding out a generous amount of red blood. “oH mY gOd.”
She stumbled out of her swing and half flew her way towards me. I tried to get up and calm her down, but when she saw me wince at the movement, she winced too.
This made her all the more anxious and panicky. She fumbled in her bunny shaped bag for a good minute throwing all sorts of things in a pile next to her.
Is that a ziplock bag of Chicken Wings…? I squinted at the item in the pile figuring out what could she possibly do with that.
“AHA!!” she clutched the hello kitty box in her hands and held it in the air like it was a reward.
Bouncing to her feet she stepped closer to me and bent down so she can expect my wound. Although she looked distressed and at the blink of crying, she tried to hide it by smiling at me soothingly as if to say ‘everything is ok’. She shuffled to her pile and pulled out a purple water bottle and poured some on my wound.
“Does it sting?” she looked up with her big doe eyes and my chest ached again.
“..not at all.” I replied and she bit her lip and placed her arms out at my knee making me tilt my head in confusion.
“Hold still Shoto.” She furrowed her brows and I felt the blood rolling down my leg stop and the blood gushing out of my wound seal itself from any blood escaping too. She wiped the remaining substance off my skin and put two Hello Kitty bandaids on the scrape.
“How did you..?” I trailed off with widened eyes
“My quirk!” she cheered but her smile faded and she started crying all of the sudden.
“M-mommy doesn’t like m-me using my quirk! A-and I j-just did! I’m terrible!” she exclaimed pulling her hands to her face covering herself in shame. I gaped at her trembling form.
She’s like...me..
Quickly, I pried off her hands out of her face, and cup her face with my own hands making her look up at me softening my gaze.
“Hey.” I spoke that made her freeze and stop trembling. Her emerald orbs followed mine and glistened with tears brimming her long, beautiful eyelashes. Her wings slumped, tensed and her lip bitten raw had all paused to pay attention to my next words.
“You are not terrible.” my face was soft but hardened at the end of sentence.
It stung saying that. Because all I could think of is how I was just like her. I was just in this situation, telling her the things I wanted to hear. All the things I should’ve heard. The thing is, I know what I’m saying is true. So why can’t I say this to myself?
I shake away from my thoughts and get back to what I was doing: taking care of my sudden caretaker.
That’s right. I need to focus on Izuku! She needs me!
“I don’t know your mom. But I know that she definitely doesn’t think your anything near terrible.” I soothed over her hiccups and swipe any stray tears.
She scrunched up her nose and furrowed her own brows at me. “Why were you crying?”
I was off guard and stumbled on my words, before collecting myself and replying. “I wasn’t good enough for someone.”
I mean, it’s true. Why would mother pour boiling water on me if I was truly loved? And it’s all that bastard’s fault I’m--
“Well, I think you’re good enough!”
Her tiny hand had clenched in a fist when she exclaimed her statement, startling the whole park. Her feathers visibly ruffled, she huffed angrily and started tearing up again.
“Who in the world would think that!? You’re super caring and sweet!” she embraced me in a hug and her wings slumped again as I looked down at her, seeing as though she was quite the small creature. The light hit her perfectly, making her glow and my heart squeezed.
“Did you get those injuries because of them?!” she gasped in horror and hugged me tighter like she was trying to squeeze the negativity out.
She was half right, But I nodded anyways and if possible, she squeezed tighter.
I let out a breath when she released me, but I don’t think I was actually breathing with what she did next.
She got on her tippy toes and kissed my face.
Well, she kissed my bandaged Injury. But it was still startling. I feel my face getting hotter and she panics.
“Shoto! Your face is red! Are you ok? You're not sick, are you?” Now she holds my face in her hands. I nod stiffly and she sighs in relief.
“You need to take care of yourself more! My Mommy used to say kissing owies will make them go away.” she says matter-of-factly and nods.
“Wait, ‘used to’?” I question and she hesitantly nods.
“Yeah...She’s not really here..” She looks at the ground and crumple the ends of her dress in her fist.
“Oh. Me too.” I say and she snaps her head to me and a small smile graced her lips.
“I guess we’re pretty similar, huh?” she laughs a little and turns to a scruffy looking man calling over for her.
She turned to me and places the box of Hello Kitty bandaids in my hands. This time, kissing my cheek instead.
“If I see you when we’re older, I’ll protect you with all my might! And I’ll prove you’re enough!” She declares proudly while skipping away towards the man.
“Bye-Bye Shocchan!” she waved and held onto the man’s hand and they left. Leaving me a flustered, red, mess.
wAt.
I sat back down onto my swing and stared in their direction, then to the box in my hands.
My chest feels funny.
