Smiling

I had the strangest dream last night...

I was walking round my little neighbourhood, when I saw a man dancing. It was a very nice dance. I could just make out a violin playing in the background, but there were no people playing it, and no record player. Just him alone, dancing gracefully to music that shouldn't exist.

All I could see was his silhouette. But he started dancing towards me, and I could sort of see his face. He had no eyes, but a painfully wide cartoon smile. All of a sudden, he stopped dancing, and started running. He ran very fast, and it wasn't until he was a few paces away that I realised he was still coming for me. I turned to run away, but his hand was on my shoulder and he was dragging me away from my family, my life, my everything, as if nothing in the world meant more to him than taking away the only things important to me...

I woke with a start. It was scary to think of what nightmares were to come with that face on my mind. I walked into the living room and saw a woman in the rocking chair.

My girlfriend was cradling our child. Why did he have to be born still? I walked round to face her. I knew it was painful, but she had to let him go. Her face shocked me more.

Her eyes were gone, blood pouring from the sockets where those blue beauties had once been. She was tied to the chair, her lipstick smudged round her face. But the thing that caught my eyes was the smile, drawn in blood, painfully wide like the smiling man in my dream.

As I sat in the floor, head in my hands, I heard the violin music playing, hauntingly beautiful. The door creaked open, but I thought it all in my head. I looked up, however, to see a woman in my girlfriend's lipstick, knife in her hand, smiling at me. She placed her hand on my shoulder, and I knew I was done for...
