Sixteen. Star of the Show

The premiere and release of the movie was creeping up on Nevaeh. Before, she was excited to have people watch her do something new. Now? Not so much.

The entire cast had flown in together, Vaeh and Sokena sitting on the plane with each other. They had talked about everything, laughing over every little thing. They even talked about Jude, Nevaeh smiling and giggling about the way he had treated her while they stayed together. She brought up him clearing his schedule to attend her premiere, Sokena replying with a bunch of "Awwwww's."

     "Gio said he wants to go, that'll be a cute reunion," Sokena mentioned. They had talked about them before, Gio and her relationship. She promised that the footballer didn't hate Nevaeh like she thought he did, and that his anger and frustration over their breakup had died down. In fact, he even said he was proud of her for how far she'd come and promised to cheer her and Sokena on at the premiere.

     "I wonder how long it's been since him and Jude have seen each other. They were, like, best friends on Dortmund, it's crazy that we barely see them at all now that he's moved," Nevaeh sighed. "But they are hours apart now, so."

     "I'm sure they'll still act like nothing's changed at the premiere. Boys will be boys," Sokena smiled, her joke making Nevaeh laugh.

     They had checked in to the hotel with their other castmates, Sokena and Nevaeh sharing a room of two beds. The actors departed, telling each other good night and congratulating them on tomorrow. Nevaeh and Sokena retreated to their room, unlocking the door and walking in. The two let out a heavy sigh, putting their suitcases off to the side and melting into their separate beds.

     "I'm so tired," Nevaeh complained, pulling her phone out of her sweatpants pocket and scrolling through her many notifications. She felt like her heart had done a backflip when she saw missed messages from Jude.

     "Me too," Sokena sighed. "I'm going to bed." She grabbed some clothes out of her bag, bringing them in the bathroom and quickly changing. Once she was done, Vaeh went in and did the same thing.

     "Night, Ken."

     "Goodnight, Neve."

The premiere went well. All the excitement Nevaeh held left her body and converted into anxiousness. She was afraid for what the critics would say about her performance, about the entire movie. Sokena had used most of her energy reassuring Vaeh and making sure she was okay.

The girls spent hours getting ready, hiring people to style their hair and do their makeup. Nevaeh was hoping Angela could fly down to do her makeup and attend the premiere with her, but their schedules clashed. She still remained on FaceTime with the two girls, letting them know how great it was gonna be.

Once the girls were done and ready, they took photos of each other for their social medias, and asked their boyfriends if they were ready. In true man-fashion, they were not.

"Gio said he's almost done, he's just helping Jude out," Sokena told Nevaeh.

"Not shocking at all," Nevaeh sighed, turning her phone off. "They better hurry up, we have to be there in an hour and we still have to actually go get them."

"Here, let me yell at him," Sokena pushed a few buttons before pressing her phone to her ear. Nevaeh heard it ringing before it abruptly stopped. "Giovanni Alejandro Reyna, I know you see us texting you." A pause, before Sokena continued on, "You too, Jude. We had more to do and we still ended up ready before you. If I don't see you texting us in the next five minutes saying you're ready, neither of you will be coming with us at all. Which means Jude won't get to see what I'm seeing right now."

Not even four minutes later, Gio and Jude both texted their girlfriends letting them know that they were ready. Nevaeh and Sokena got into their driver's limo, rolling down the streets of L.A.

"You excited?" Sokena asked, a smile on her face when she saw the excitement and nervousness on her friend's face.

"More than anything."

It took everything in Nevaeh to not pass out and die when she saw her boyfriend. She forgot how good he looked in person after not seeing him for so long. When the driver opened the door for the two girls, Vaeh practically jumped out and ran over to her boyfriend.

"Hey," he chuckled, wrapping his arms around her waist. She hugged him back, pulling away and giving him a kiss. "You look absolutely breathtaking."

"Trust me, I know," Nevaeh winked, letting go of him. "You look good."

"All you had to say was 'you' and I'd already be on my knees and apologizing for breathing the same air as you."

Nevaeh looked over at Gio with a smile, giving him a hug and greeting him. It wasn't as awkward as she had expected, him immediately diving into conversation with her and Sokena about the premiere. He congratulated the two on their movie and told them about how excited he was to watch it.

"Shall we go then?" Sokena asked, grabbing onto Gio's hand.

"We shall," Nevaeh smiled, doing the same and grabbing Jude's hand. The two girls lead their boyfriends into the limo, their driver closing the door behind the four.

Jude and Nevaeh had walked the red carpet together, getting cute photos taken of them. There were more photographers and paparazzi than she expected, and it almost freaked her out. But Jude was there to calm her down and tell her it was okay.

Once everything had died down and people started to find their seats, Jude, Nevaeh, Gio, and Sokena all met up where their seats were arranged; the front. Vaeh was to give a speech on stage with the director, Jordan Peele, and that was the only thing on her mind. What if she stuttered or messed up a word or said something she didn't mean?

As the voices decrescendoed to a stop and Jordan could be seen walking on stage with a microphone, Nevaeh knew it was time. The theatre erupted with claps and cheers for Peele and had died down soon after.

"I'm not gonna waste too much time with talking," Jordan continued, speaking into the microphone. "But this is one good film. I am so thankful to have worked with such a good cast and crew and to have gotten the production process sped up. I want to thank every single actor and crew member that worked on this film with me, and everyone here today to watch it. Now, would the star of the show please come up here?"

Screams and cheers and claps started up again as Nevaeh stood up with a smile and a wave. Jude couldn't take his eyes off of her. She walked onto the stage, Jordan handing the microphone off to her. "Hi, it's me, I'm the star of the show," she joked, making everyone laughing. "To be honest, I'm in the same boat as Peele—" she made a motion in his direction. "—I don't want to waste too much time. But I do want to thank Jordan for even creating this amazing film. To the crew for being the most helpful people in the world. And to my cast mates for being so welcoming and hilarious. Then there's Daniel." She rolled her eyes jokingly. That's how she and her cast mate Daniel Kaluuya got along, fake-bickering back and forth.

"To Sokena, an absolute angel," Nevaeh went on. "We didn't know each other at all before this film, and she's quickly become one of my closest friends. I love you, Kiki." She looked over at her friend, pointing at her with a smile as people clapped. "To my best friend, Angela, who couldn't attend tonight. And my brother, Pablo. He's not here either, as he's on bed rest for his injury. To my grandma, who tragically passed a few months ago. Without her, I wouldn't have even started this career. And last but not least—" she paused, looking at him in the crowd of people. "My boyfriend, Jude. He's my biggest supporter. Had it not been for him, we wouldn't have even been seeing this movie for another few months. So thank you so much, babe."

People cheered the most for that last bit, Jude, Gio, and Sokena being the loudest of them all. The applause went on for a good twenty seconds before Nevaeh said, "Now, I hope you enjoy Punisher." There was more applause as Nevaeh and Jordan walked off stage, heading to their seats.

"I'm so proud of you," Jude whispered to his girlfriend as she sat down next to him. She looked at him with a smile and held his hand. They remained that way throughout the entire movie.
