Fourteen. You Held Me The Whole Way Through

None of them had woken up until around eleven. Vaeh had fallen asleep in Jude's arms, the both of them watching a movie together to help with their insomnia. When she had woken up, she could hear the shower being run and Angela banging on the bathroom door.

     "Jude, hurry up, I need to shower too!" Angela shouted, continuously knocking aggressively on the door. She could hear the water turn off and the door swing open just seconds later. "Ew," Angie made fake-gagging noises once he had come out in nothing but a towel, still slightly wet from the shower water.

     "You happy now?" he rolled his eyes, walking across the hall to the guest bedroom and shutting the door behind him.

     Angela stormed into the living room, finding an awake but confused Nevaeh. "You need to get your boyfriend in check."

     Vaeh nearly flinched at the word. One word, something so small and so simple, yet still being a label she hadn't expected. Unfortunately for Nevaeh, Angela had noticed the weird change in behavior.

     "What was that?" Angela asked, giving her best friend a weird look.

     "Huh?"

     "When I said 'boyfriend' you like. . . tweaked out," Angela noted. She quickly put two and two together, whisper-screaming, "Oh my gosh, are you guys dating now?"

Nevaeh uncontrollably smiled, unable to hide her feelings. "Yeah, since last night," she told Angela. Briefly, she went over the events that had taken place, her best friend growing with excitement.

     "Are you guys like. . . keeping it a secret or are you planning a hard launch?"

     "I don't know what we're gonna do. Everyone already knows about us, they just don't know that we're official yet," Nevaeh replied and sighed. "But I'm excited. You think I'll meet Jobe?"

     Angela laughed and told her friend, "Probably."

A week had passed. It was Angie and Jude's last day staying with Vaeh. Over the last few days, they had spent all their time together, Nevaeh showing them around the city. They were spending their last few hours together and all was going well.

     Until she got a phone call.

     "Oh, it's my dad. He never calls me, I wonder what's up," Nevaeh announced, leaving the living room and going to her bedroom. Once she answered, she knew something was off. It was already weird that he had called, but. . . He spoke quietly, softly. Darren was usually a louder kind of guy, so this caught Vaeh by surprise.

     "Hey, honey," his voice strained and he cleared his throat. "Um, are you busy? This is important."

     "Yeah, what's wrong?"

     "It's your grandma."

     Nevaeh's heart dropped all the way to her stomach. She knew something was wrong, she just knew it. And now that her suspicions were confirmed, she didn't know what to do. "What... what's wrong with her?"

     "She's had a stroke. We don't know how long she's been home alone for, but your grandpa found her on the floor and. . . Since it took too long for them to find her, she— They said she might not live."

     She couldn't even form words. She could feel her vision growing blurry from the tears that were forming, and all she could do was stand there. Her tears fell to the floor like raindrops, drowning into her own sadness. She hated this dream, this nightmare, that she wanted so badly to wake up from. But this wasn't a nightmare. This was real.

"Okay, I'll be down there tomorrow," she sniffed, wiping away her tears.

"Don't. . . Don't even bother, Vaeh. She's um, not doing good at all and I just don't want you to see that. Please take care of yourself for me, okay, Nevie?"

"No, Dad, I'm coming down. If she does. . . I wanna at least get to say goodbye."

"Okay. Let me know, and I'll pick you up. I love you."

"Love you too." He hung up. The realization of the phone call kicked in, and all she could do was cry. She threw her phone at her closet, the device falling with a loud noise. Jude and Angela had rushed into the bedroom, seeing Nevaeh breaking down on her bed.

"Oh no, what happened?" Angela asked, walking over to her friend and taking her in her arms. Jude followed, sitting on the opposite side and holding his girlfriend's hand.

"She. . . Grandma might. . ." she struggled to get out, her tears falling down harder. "She might die."

     "Oh baby, I'm so sorry," Jude apologized, Angela letting go and allowing him to hug her. He pulled her in close and tight, giving her a kiss on the forehead. He didn't want to let her go, not here, not now, not ever. He let her cry into his arms, Angela holding onto Nevaeh as well.

They sat in silence, letting her get all of her emotions out. Once she was done they had let go of her aa she told them, "I told Dad I'd be there tomorrow."

"If I could go with you, I would," Angie frowned, grabbing both of Vaeh's hands and holding them into hers.

"I'll go so you aren't alone," Jude offered with a smile.

"No, you don't have to," Nevaeh protested. "Just go home, I've already bothered you both enough this week."

"I'm going," Jude decided, getting up and kissing her forehead again. He went to go re-pack his bag, leaving Angela to take care of her.

"He's too good for me," Vaeh sighed, looking over at her best friend.

"Definitely the other way around, but yeah, he's sweet. I'm just glad he found you."
