Chapter 4
Sally and Paul Blofis sat on the couch in the living room. Sally had already put all the dishes away after dinner, so there were no chores left to do expect one.
"Paul, honey?" Paul looked up at his wife.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Thalia and Nico are homeless."
Paul's eyes widened comically. Sally continued,
"And ultimately I won't make a decision without you, but I have to do what I think is right. I know you haven't really been around Thalia and Nico very much, but they are wonderful kids and great company. They are really sweet and amusing and polite." Sally paused and drew in a sigh,
"I think we should officially adopt Thalia and Nico." Sally didn't meet Paul's eyes as she said this, but she could imagine his expression. She imagined his eyes bugging slightly and his mouth falling open slightly. However, when she looked up, Paul was smiling slightly. He opened his mouth slightly when he was drowned out by thunder and a knock at the door. Sally muttered a swear and hurried to the door.
"Lord Zeus, this is not a conversation I invited you to. This decision will not involve yo— oh my! Lady Artemis, I apologize for yelling. What are you doing here?"
"No need to apologize Sally. I'm here to talk about Thalia. And even though she won't physically grow up, she is still technically a teenage girl- a young adult at most. As I'm sure you know, Thalia is currently living in a tent on the street. Of course, the tent I have provided her with is more than enough, however, I believe Thalia-and Nico- deserve the privilege of living with a family. Especially Thalia, because soon enough, she wont have any family left. I guess what i'm trying to say is this; would you mind taking Thalia in? Maybe like a pseudo-adoption type thing? Of course, it's up to you, but I thought it was something you should consider"
Sally blinked and smiled slightly before answering,
"Well actually we wer—" This time it was Sally who was drowned out by a loud crack of thunder. It was clear that this thunder was the one announcing Zeus's arrival.
"Paul, hun, close your eyes."
Without pausing to question Sally, Paul snapped his eyelids closed. Sally was just closing her eyes when Zeus flashed in. Before his body fully materialized in the room, he had already started yelling
"No! No! No! She already has a family, she does not need any mortal pity. I forbid any mortal from 'adopting' my daughter. She is old enough to live on her own, an she is definitely not going to be living with my brothers children!"
Sally had re-opened her eyes, just in time to roll them dramatically.
"My dearest apologies Lord Zeus. This does not involve you. Thanks for your opinion, we will keep it in mind. Now, may I respectfully ask you to please leave my apartment."
Zeus was about to protest when a there was another knock on the door. Sally sighed and collapsed onto the couch, holding her head in her hands. Paul ran to open the door, but it burst open before he got there.
"Sally! My dear! I think it would be a great idea for the big three children to live together. They could learn to manage their powers and just be teenagers. I'd even offer to pay any damage fees that happen as a result of this."
Sally was still sitting on the couch with her head in her hands.
"Cy. Please. I really do not need three Olympians in my apartment."
"Cy? Whose that?"
Sally lifted her head from her hands and looked around questioningly.
"Oh! Lord Hades! I apologize. I thought you were---"
"Me."
Everyone turned their attention from Sally to Poseidon, who had appeared in the doorway behind Hades. Hades jumped slightly, before stepping to the side to allow Poseidon to enter. Sally sighed in resignation.
"Well, since it doesn't seem like anyone will be leaving, how about we all sit down. I'll bring in some cookies and drinks. We can discuss this together, now that everyone who feels entitled to share their opinion is here." She muttered that last part to herself, but everyone in the room heard it anyways. Sally bustled out of the room. When she was gone, Poseidon turned to Zeus and chuckled,
"And you say Perseus gets his sass from me."
From across the room, Paul cleared his throat. Everyone turned to look at the mortal.
"Paul? Did you say something?" Zeus asked, with a very persnickety tone of voice. Paul cleared his throat again and mumbled,
"He, uh typically goes by Percy."
The room echoed with the sudden silence. Everyone was rather taken aback. After a moment of consideration, Poseidon nods,
"Yes, Paul. I suppose you're right. I apologize."
More awkward silence. Artemis was the only one seemingly unaffected. She was trying to hide her laughter by picking dirt out from under her nails. Hades, who had been standing in the corner, took a seat on the floor and started humming to himself, while simultaneously tapping the floor. Slowly, everyone started looking at him.
"Brother, what are you doing?" Poseidon asked. Hades startled,
"Oh, it's almost autumn. Persephone is coming home soon." Hades smiled and continued humming. Awkwardly, everyone looked away.
"Okay! Everyone, take a seat get comfortable. Hopefully this won't take too long, but I don't think our current company is able to make any decisions in a timely manner."
Sally has just re-entered the room, speaking as she hurried in. She directed her sentence to Artemis and Paul, but took no precautions against letting the Big Three hear. Artemis laughed, as she watched the Big Three try to piece together what Sally was implying. Poseidon realized first, and announced his dismay, in form of an staring an argument.
"HEY! I'm not the unproductive one, I actually have a very well organized and clean kingdom!"
Zeus laughed,
"Like the ocean could ever be cleaner than Olympus. Especially with all that mortal litter."
"Well, it's the most organized."
Hades suddenly interjected,
"Poseidon, how many creatures do you have in your kingdom? I have billions. Everyone that's ever died is sent to my kingdom. I have to keep track of all of them. Take that for organized."
Poseidon was about to retort, probably something about fish, when Sally interrupted,
"This is exactly what i'm talking about." Somehow, Sally managed to make the big three look sheepish. She continued, "Now, to get to the point. I'm sure you all know why you're here. Now, I know you feel entitled- not you, lady artemis- to share your opinion, but you need to know that the final decision will be up to Paul. Additionally, I believe Zeus is the only one of the parthenon against adoption." Sally paused to take a deep breath.
"WAIT! Adoption? Of who?"
Everyone's head turned to Poseidon. Sally raised her left eyebrow.
"Adoption...of Nico and Thalia." She spoke painfully slow, taken aback by Poseidon's confusion, "What did you think was happening here, Cy?"
Poseidon blinked and shrugged,
"I don't know, I sensed my brothers and came to supervise."
A collective sigh of exasperation swept the room.
"Okay, well, no. That's not what happened. Paul and I are deciding whether or not we should adopt Nico and Thalia."
Poseidon's eyes lit up.
"How wonderful! I agree! It'll get the children out of Camp Half Blood, but still in a relatively safe space! And I know how much young Perseus loves his cousins. That's the majority! Zeus is overruled. Decision is made."
From somewhere on the floor, Hades muttered, 'Who put a quarter in him?'. Zeus stood up abruptly,
"The decision is not yet made. Sally said it was up to Paul, and he hasn't spoken yet."
All eyes turned towards Paul, who was sitting there dumbfounded. He coughed awkwardly and addresses the god of the underworld, who was currently laying on the floor like a cat,
"Lord Hades, please correct me if I am wrong, but I heard you say that you would pay for all the damage that might occur?"
Hades sat up and nodded,
"Correct," Paul nodded slowly.
"Then, I don't see why we shouldn't adopt. Damage fees were the only reason I was hesitant before."
Artemis stood up and motioned to the air. A couple pieces of paper appeared in her hand.
"If y'all sign these on the line, the process will be done. It's the same form I use to recruit new hunters, just modified for this particular scenario."
Everyone nodded as Artemis passed out the official Mt. Olympus adoption papers. Even Zeus signed, though he grumbled about it. Artemis collected the again and they magically disappeared. As they popped out of existence, a faint lull of thunder filled the sky. It was official. Nico and Thalia were officially Sally and Paul's children.
Just as the thunder was fading, there was a knock at the door. Hades rushed to open it. Persephone bustle in carrying a large bouquet of flowers. She pecked Hades on the cheek.
"Hi Honey! I was down at our palace, but I couldn't find you, so I just followed your power signature and it lead me here. Oh hello Sally! Nice to see you." Sally waved at the goddess as Hades smiled,
"You're home?"
"Yup! It's officially fall!"
"Well, Persephone and I better get going. We have setting up to do. And Sally? I want to thank you. I just want Nico to be happy, but Persephone and I can't do enough for him. I know you can. Thanks again. Paul, Sally, close your eyes."
The two mortals heeded Hades' warning as he flashed out with Persephone. When Sally and Paul opened their eyes, Zeus had left as well. That left Artemis and Poseidon sitting in the Bolfis' apartment. Artemis stood up to leave, but Sally stopped her.
"You are welcome to stay. We have cookies!" Artemis smiled but shook her head.
"I have to get back to my hunters. I will grab some cookies to go though. Thanks for your hospitality Sally."
"Okay then. You're welcome back anytime! Bye!"
Artemis smiled over her shoulder as she walked out the door. Once the door was fully closed, she flashed out. Poseidon was the only Olympian left. He stood by the couch awkwardly and cleared his throat,
"Uh, I guess I'd better be going. Nice to see you again Sally."
"Wait, Cy. I...Um. We still have cookies." Sally Jackson was looking at the ground, her cheeks bright red.
"Ah, yes. I'll grab some for Amphitrite and Triton." He reached for the plate of blue cookies, but Sally intercepted his hand, saying,
"They aren't meant to go underwater." Poseidon replied with a sheepish laugh and smile,
"Well, If you insist." He brushed back Sally's hand and grabbed a cookie, looking her in the eyes the entire time. Paul cleared his throat loudly and shocked Sally and Poseidon out of their daze. Both of their faces were bright red. There was an awkward silence for about a minute before Poseidon started laughing. Both of the mortals looked at him. Tears ran down the gods' face as his laughter grew. Paul and Sally shared a curious glance before joining in on the laughter as well.
Before long, the three of them were all lying on the ground laughing. No one could really remember why they were laughing anymore, granted though, the mortals don't know why they were laughing in the first place. Whenever someone caught their composure, they would make eye contact with one of the others and start laughing harder.
Unfortunately, Poseidon was the God of Earthquakes, so whenever he got too excited about something and let his control go, the inevitable disaster followed.
1200 words. Not my best chapter, but at least I was productive.
