Ch. 21 Do I know you?

"I am the Little Ballerina" the girl nearly snarled, pulling sharply against her restraints.

"I was born a fighter of an endless war" she said with another sharp pull.

"The lines of right and wrong do not exist anymore", another tug.

"I am Hydra's judge, jury and executioner", another clang of the restraints.

"I am the weapon that hands out the sentence. I am the last thing that they'll ever see" the blonde girl hissed out as she stared at the dark haired man and red headed woman who just entered the room.

"Do you think you stand a chance against Hydra? Kill me if you must for I will not tell you anything. But just know, if you cut off one head-" the girl began but was cut off.

"Another grows back- yeah, we know" Natasha cut in. She was all too familiar with that saying. And she was over it.

The redhead let go of her grip on the door handle and made her way over to the still thrashing girl.

The girl fell still when the woman stopped in front of her. The two just stared at each other for a moment. Both of their gazes revealing nothing.

Natasha was surveying the girl in a detached manner but on the inside she was really checking to make sure the girl was alright. All she could notice were a few bumps and bruises but physically the girl looked fine.

While the girl was scanning the woman for signs of weakness, plotting her escape.

The girl broke the silence first, "who are you?" She asked, her tone neutral, her gaze never leaving the redhead.

"We want to help you" Natasha said simply.

The girl let out another bitter laugh, "yeah? And why would you want to do that?" She asked. "I have nothing and I mean nothing, not to you, not even to Hydra" she said harshly. It was clear that the girl had no memory of either of them.

Natasha stalled for a minute, she hadn't been expecting that question. "Because I used to have nothing, too" she said honestly, her tone soft, "but then I got this. A job and a family. And I'm trying to be better" she said, "and I think you want to be better too"

The girl stopped her thrashing and stilled as if she were thinking. "And are you?" She asked

Natasha tilted her head, "am I what?" She asked

"Better?"

The woman let herself smile for what seemed like the first time in months, "yeah, I'm trying to be. It's hard but you learn after a while"

The blonde nodded. "And you?" The girl asked, turning her gaze on James who was still by the door, "any sappy speech from you?"

He cleared his throat, "no, pep talks aren't really my thing" he said, "but I did bring you something"

The girl raised an eyebrow as he took a few more steps towards her. Who is the man? Is he going to hurt her? What is he holding behind his back? Her mind was racing and she began to pull on the restraints again.

He simply continued his walk and gently set a small bouquet of purple flowers on the rolling table next to the girl.

Daffodils. The girl thought. How did she know that? She couldn't recall ever learning that at Hydra.

He knew it was a poor attempt but he couldn't help but bring them. That day in the garden with Rina was a memory that he would never forget. He knew it would be too much to ask for it to trigger her memory but he had hoped that the flowers would ease her mind if anything else.

The girl squinted at them. "Daffodils?" She asked, saying the word aloud. It would take a lot more than flowers for her to trust these people.

He nodded, "I thought you might like them"

The room was silent for a moment, "I am going to undo one of your restraints to check your arm for trackers, alright?" He said gently, warning her of what was about to happen.

The girl simply nodded.

He unlocked the restraint on her right wrist and gently pulled it until her arm was straight. He was looking intently for the raised indication of a tracker but could not see one.

He was about to relock the restraint when he noticed the girl looking intently at him, "what?" He asked

"Papa?" She asked, no louder than a whisper.

Before Bucky could say anything else the girl yanked her wrist from his grasp and punched him squarely in the throat causing him to gasp for air. She didn't remember, she'd just said it to distract him.

The girl then grabbed the vase of flowers with her free hand and slammed the vase against the table until it shattered and she had a jagged piece of glass in her hand.

Natasha was quick to react, kicking the girl's hand causing the piece of glass to shatter when she dropped it. Holding the girl's wrist tightly, she sighed. "I really wish you hadn't done that, Ekaterina" she said softly.

The girl tilted her head, she didn't recognize that word. Ekaterina. What did that mean?

Natasha recognized that look. "What? They didn't tell you your name?" She asked

The girl shook her head, "no. I didn't know I had one. They only called me the Little Ballerina" she said.

"Well you have a name and it is Ekaterina Ivanovna, not the Little Ballerina" the red head said as she locked the restraint back into place.

"And what is yours?" The girl asked. She had wanted to remain silent but the woman was so calm and she seemed so familiar that the girl couldn't resist.

"Natasha" the redhead responded.

"Natasha" the girl repeated, the word sounding foreign on her tongue.

Bucky had recovered quickly and was standing off to the side just watching the interaction. His throat was sore but he guessed he walked into that one.

"Now we are here to help you and we can't do that if you keep resisting. Do you understand?" Natasha asked calmly.

The girl nodded, "yes"

"Good" Natasha said and grabbed a chair from the corner of the room and set it down right in front of the girl. "Now, I've told you that we want to help you but my question is.. do you want help? I am not going to force you into anything. But you did have a life before Hydra and we can help you if you want. It is your choice"

The room was silent for a moment, "there was life before Hydra?" The blonde asked, her voice breaking with emotion, "there was life before the killing and the violence?" She almost couldn't believe it. The death and destruction was all she could remember. It was all she knew.

"Yes, and there can be life after it too" Nat assured the girl.

A single tear rolled down the girl's cheek, she wanted to angrily wipe it away but her arms were tied, "how? How do you know you can help me? Help me remember? How can you help me escape Hydra?"

"Because we've done it, I'm not going to lie. It's going to be difficult but sometimes the reward outweighs the risk" the woman said reassuringly.

The girl took a shaky breath,

"Ok. When do we start?"
