Ch. 6: The Mystery Student
-4 days after the Sports Festival-
A sigh of relief escaped Y/N lips as she shuffled a bit in her new chair, requested to Zeus the day before when she got up from the stool that had been in the back of the room and her touche felt weird. Now she had a small desk and a swivel chair in the corner of the class close to the window.
She hummed softly as she tapped her cheek with the end of her pencil as her eyes gazed over her students. Mr. Zeus says that there were nine gods that I had to teach. But when Yui and I asked he shouted at us saying that there were only eight. At the rememberance of being scolded by the god of knowledge, the (H/C) pouted slightly. It makes me wonder...who could this mystery god be?
"That ends the class today." Thoth's voice and the slamming close of a book brought Y/N out of her thoughts.
"How about we go to lunch together today?" Apollon beamed as he stood up from his desk and stretched his arms above his head.
"No problem. Y/N-sensie, why don't you join us?" Balder offered to the angelic female.
"Huh? Oh, sorry, but I'm eating lunch in the library to get your next lessons prepared. Perhaps next time?" The (H/C) offered with a shy smile.
"Alright. Don't overwork yourself Dove!" Apollon chirped as he smiled at the female.
"Thank you, Apollon. Enjoy your lunches." Y/N waved her students out of the classroom, before sighing to herself with a pout. "This is just like having the manage the scrolls." She murmured to herself as she sluggishly grabbed what she needed and began to head towards the library.
When she finally got to the large room, she winced as she opened the large oak doors that creaked as she put pressure on them. "Mr. Thoth, I'm here! Did you get the books that I requested this morning?" Y/N questioned aloud as she walked into the library.
"Yes, they're on the table." Thoth, not even looking up from the book he was reading, told her.
Y/N's gaze traveled to one of the farthest tables from the Egyptian man, looking exhausted suddenly. It was unable to tell if it was because it was so far from her co-teacher or if it was because of the mountain of books that were on the table.
"That's a lot of books based off of human poetry." She stated, sighing loudly as she walked over to the table and lying down what she had brought with her; a binder, pencils, sticky notes, and a (F/C) lunch box that Tebula had packed for her. "I don't even know where to start." She murmured, picking up a red bound book and a green one with golden writing.
"How about instead of complaining you actually get to work. Lunch only lasts for half an hour." Thoth bitterly pointed out.
"I-I know that!" Y/N managed to stutter out, before once more pouting at the mountain of books. Honestly, how did he get those so stack so high without them toppling over? She wondered, before shaking her head and beginning to read the green book, labeled 'Haiku Poetry'.

While the two teachers worked individually, Y/N would snack on the small treats that were put in her lunch box, occasionally offering some to Thoth, before jotting down a title to a poem that she liked while Thoth denied each time.
"Do you want some grapes?" She offered, not taking her eyes off of the black and white stanzas as she popped one of the (red/green) fruits into her mouth. [A/N: Sorry if you don't like grapes. >.<]
"No." Thoth sighed as he gave her the same answer from the past few food offerings.
Y/N hummed in response, before scribbling out 'Sonnet XVII, Pablo Neruda'. When she reached out to grab another grape, her eyebrows furrowed together as she felt only an empty space. "Huh? Oi! I thought you said you didn't want any!? Why did you steal all of them?!" Y/N shouted, pointing at Thoth accusingly as she saw that all of her grapes were gone.
"What are you going on about now?" Thoth scoffed as he glared in the direction of the (H/C).
"Don't act innocent! You stole my grapes!" Y/N shouted, standing up and slamming her hands on the table.
"I did no such thing." Thoth denied, glaring at her.
"Then where did they all go? I only had one." Y/N snapped.
Before either of the two could continue to bicker, they paused as they heard the sound of books falling and a yelp.
Y/N quickly turned around and stared wide eyed as she saw that the mountain of books that were on the table had fallen onto the ground. "It's moving!" She squeaked, jumping back into Thoth's chest. How he got to her so fast she had no clue.
The two watched as a head popped out of the horde of books. "Kuraa....ba...." The figure whined, rubbing his forehead.
"I should have known you were involved." Thoth sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
The points of hair on the top of the boy's head perked up, resembling dog ears Y/N noted, before he smiled innocently at Thoth. Then he seemed to suddenly notice the (H/C) angel. "Kuraa-baraaa!" He exclaimed, immediately tackling the female onto the ground and nuzzling her cheek.
"Anubis! Come on boy, I missed you too, but you know how I feel about hugs." Complained Y/N, trying to push the Egyptian god away, only to fail as he tightened his grip on her.
"You...know Anubis?" Thoth questioned, looking surprised. "How did I not know of this?" He then asked, looking slightly upset.
"We met in fourteen-hundred B.C." Y/N explained.
"For what? I don't remember any significant meeting that you two could've interacted." He stated, folding his arms over his chest as he looked at the two skeptifically.
"Three words." Y/N held up three fingers as her eyes narrowed at Thoth. "Free the slaves*."
Thoth seemed to physically pale, while Anubis whimpered at the rememberance of the spiritual clash between the Abrahamic and Egyptian worlds.
"That's right." Murmured Thoth awkwardly, letting his eyes gaze away from her burning (E/C) irises.
"So Anubis is the other god that we have to teach, huh?" Y/N asked, petting the top of Anubis's head to help calm him down. "Why isn't he in the classroom with the others?" She questioned curiously.
"He's very shy around who he doesn't know. You're actually the first I've ever seen him act like that to other than a couple of our own." Thoth explained, looking at the two once more. "I don't want to force him to go if he doesn't want to." He stated.
"None of us can go home until he learns, though." Y/N pointed out, pausing her petting.
"Karabara." Anubis whined, clinging onto Y/N's wrist and looking up at her with puppy eyes. "Kuraaa-bar?"
Y/N sighed. "No, I won't force you to go, Anubis." She denied, once more petting him. "But you will need to start learning like the others, or who knows what Mr. Zeus will do." She told him.
"You can understand him as well?" Thoth asked, furrowing his eyesbrows in confusion. Out of all of the Egyptian gods, he had been the only one to have completely understood the dog-like god.
"Of course. As a messenger of God I must know all languages in order to share his word." Y/N explained. Her eyes than lit up as she suddenly had an idea. "How about a promise! Anubis," She cooed, cupping the god of death's cheeks as she smiled bright. "if the others find out about you, promise me you'll join the class. How about it?" She asked him.
Anubis pouted, looking a bit lost in thought, before he smiled brightly and nodded quickly.
-1 Month Later-
"The students do seem to be quite lively this morning, don't you think?" Y/N giggled as she walked with Thoth towards the classroom.
"Hmph." The god of knowledge clicked his tongue in distaste, before he swung the door open. "What's with all this racket? Get back to your seats." Thoth snapped, walking into the classroom with Y/N not too far behind.
"S-sorry." Yui stuttered as she quickly got into her seat.
Thoth huffed. "Honestly, I don't want to start the class. But since I have no choice, let's just do it." He stated, while Y/N quickly scooted to her desk in the corner. "Since everyone is here, I will go over again how things will proceed and what you should be doing from now on. Given that your shackles still haven't been undone, I can see that no one among you has yet satisfied the requirements for graduation. When you understand what 'humanity' and 'love' that Zeus talked about are, your shackles will be undone and you can return to being 'gods'. Those shackles not only test your qualifications for graduation, they also seal away your original forms and abilities and force you to be human." Thoth recapt what had happened within the first month of being at the Garden. "I want you to clearly understand your limits, don't do anything excessive.
"But, it's inconvenient not being able to fly." Complained Loki.
"I am quite happy to take on human form." Balder cheerfully replied.
Thoth narrowed his eyes. "You don't think that only having to go to school is fortunate enough, don't you? Those who aren't in the student council should either join the council, or some other club activities." He stated.
"We just came to class and it's already so plain!" Takeru shouted.
"Shut up, the overview ends here. Now let's begin the class." Thoth responded.
-Lunch-
"It's so nice that they have a changing room for the gym. It's just like a real high school." Yui giggled as she walked beside Y/N towards the locker room.
"Yes, Mr. Zeus seems to have thought of everything, huh? If I was human, this place would be like a paradise!" Y/N excitedly exclaimed, her eyes seeming to sparkle, much to Yui's amusement as she laughed.
The two paused and looked at each other as they suddenly heard a scream. "That sounds like Takeru!" Yui said, and the two quickly rushed towards the kitchen.
"W-what's wrong?" Yui asked as the two entered the kitchen, where a freaked out Takeru was staring at an empty lunch bag.
"My...my curry bread!" The blue haired god cried out, before quickly turning to Loki. "It was you again, wasn't it?!" He shouted.
"What~? It wasn't me today." Loki declined.
"You said 'today'?!" Takeru growled.
"Just look over here! Although my candies aren't gone, it does seem like someone has messed with the wrapper." Loki pointed out to a bunch of candies on the ground.
"Who did this?" Apollon asked, sounding a bit too excited.
"Everyone, please calm down. I'm sure that there's a logical explanation." Y/N assured.
"Yeah, calm down!" Apollon cheerfully agreed. "This...could be....a sign of a mysterious case...?"
"No, I don't think that that's it at all." Y/N immediately declined, while Yui nodded in agreement to the (H/C)'s words.
"Whoah!"
"Balder, are you alright?" Y/N calmly questioned to blond male.
"Are you falling down all over again, Balder Hringhorni?" Tsukito monotonously asked, offering a hand to help up the Norse god.
"It hurts...No, today it seems I stepped on something...Again." Balder winced as he stood up.
"Corn?" Y/N blinked at the food.
"Is it time for the 'famous detective' to step on the stage!?" Apollon excitedly asked.
"What is that?! It sounds fun!" Loki exclaimed.
Apollon grinned. "In the morning, Miss Fairy heard movement from the hallways, but we didn't run into anyone there. Just now, someone took advantage to steal Taketake's curry bread while we were in gym class. Loki's candies were also thrown on the ground."
"Right!" The others agreed.
Y/N rolled her eyes, though smiled in amusement as she watched the crazy group of gods.
"The common point is this corn!" Apollon stated, holding up the corn Balder had tripped on. "It definitely means something-" The blond paused as the corn was suddenly snatched from his hand. "Thoth-sama?!" The Greek god asked in surprise.
"Could it be...?" The gods looked at Thoth in shock.
"So...was sensei the one who ate Taa-tan's curry bread?" Loki asked.
"T-there's no place." Yui stuttered out.
"No! It's not impossible, Miss Fairy!" Apollon quickly stated. "Ok, lets go confirm it!" He grinned excitedly.
"Eh..." Dionsyus didn't look too sure about his half-brother's words.
"Oh! Give it your best shot, Detective...I'm hungry..." Takeru complained as he wrapped his arms around his growling stomach.
"I will go buy you another curry bread." Hades told Takeru.
"Ha-Hades-san..." Takeru looked hopeful.
"Me too, you'll get me a curry bun, right Hades-kun?" Y/N questioned, smiling brightly at the Greek god.
"Oh...uh..." Hades's cheeks turned a bright pink as he looked away from her. "If you want me to get you one." He murmured.
"Alright, let's go confront Thoth-sama!" Apollon grinned and left the kitchen.
"I have a feeling that I'll be seeing Anubis in class soon." Y/N murmured to herself, smiling as she shook her head in amusement.
[*Free the slaves: The time of Moses, with the Hebrews being kept as Egyptian slaves. The only reason I have Thoth completely oblivious to this is because in the movie 'The Prince of Egypt', they have a song called 'Playing with the Big Boys Now', where they list a bunch of the Egyptian gods, and none of them were any of Thoth's other names, but they do have Anubis's, and I like to think that only the listed gods in the song knew about this spiritual conflict while the others were continuing to do their work.]
