Chapter 15 - Eye For An Eye

I watch Liten Vampyr blend into the crowd as only a predator like her would know how to.

As if I'm seeing her for the first time I'm overwhelmed by how breathtakingly beautiful she is. She possesses the kind of beauty that is flawlessly natural and timeless, her tiny frame, petite stature gives the illusion of vulnerability but truthfully she is anything but.

She makes her way over to Dad sliding through the masses effortlessly as if she was made of smoke, she perches beside him and I see for a second his eyes sparkle just that little more in her presence.

He catches me watching and waves for me to join them.

They usher me closer, where I lean into Dad to try to catch what they are quietly discussing under the radar of our friends, neighbours and music that booms throughout the pub.

"Lucas are you ready for the next adventure of the evening".

Dad smile slips from his face, his brow furrow as he carefully contemplates her words.

"Your present is wrapped and waiting, I think it will be better if Oscar waits here until we return".

Dad nods in agreement, then places his heavy hand on my shoulder "We won't be a moment, catch up with your friends, have a few drinks it's been so long since you've just had a few moments to yourself".

I go to protest but my words don't get a chance to slip from my lips before Dad his hushing and shushing me, then we are interrupted by Bell inquiring if we need drinks.

"Bell please get my son the very best whiskey you have, the best whiskey for the best son "he winks at me then goes to reach for his wallet. But Bell gently grabs his hand "it's on me, can I get you anything".

"Not for me Bell, Liten Vampyr is going to take me for a walk to get some fresh air.... all this beer has gone to my head" he unconvincingly jokes. But I see in her eyes she's not buying it anymore than I am.

Bell eyes fix on Liten Vampyr "Is that so, would you like my boys to .... walk with you".

"They won't be needed but thank you Bell".

With that, I watch her slowly raise my Dad up, her hand protectively around his waist. He is slow but steady, there is a glimmer of his strength that the cancer had tried to strip away. Even in his darkest moments, there is always a little more strength in him he can tap into to pull him through the dark; I can only hope with what lays ahead of me I have inherited his strong spirit.

As they disappear out the pub door, my stomach is now in my throat, the feeling of impending doom swirls around like vomit that threatens to erupt at any moment, I put it down to me wanting to go with him, that he's not been out of my sight in months but my heart tells me it's more a deeper reason.

I go to chase after them but fill my arm being pulled back, I turn to see Bell holding on tight. She leans in so no one can catch her words that are meant only for me "if you follow them, be prepared to see something you might not want to see, it could change how you see things, Oscar".

"Why would you say that Bell, what do you know?".

She squeezes my arm, trying to calm and reassure me, so I don't make a scene "I don't know anything Oscar but what I do know is when we come to the end of our life's it's a human urge to tie up all loose ends so we can pass on, things that would seem inconceivable then become possible as you no longer have the shackles of life restraining you, do you understand me".

I shake my head, her words make no sense, my tiered brain has no patience for her riddles.

"Oscar think. Think really hard what wrongs would your father want to right before he dies?".

"Wrongs.... what wrongs? There has only been one thing that ever broke Dad and you know that was mum death because of the car crash" painful realisation punches me in the gut, the noise of the pub fades away as the room spins around me and the stale pub air becomes thicker as I struggle to breath "do you think he's got her" I whispered to Bell scared of the answer.

"I think he intends on righting the wrongs before he dies, for him she is his wrong".

I race out of the pub, ploughing through people and tear down the high street not knowing where I'm going but knowing I have to stop him.

I hear Bell's voice call out to me but it gets lost and distorted in the sound of traffic. My jumbled brain tries to catch up with my heart.... where would they be? where would they go? Where would he take her?

My legs give way and I stumble to the ground, my hands break my fall but instantly throb like they have a heartbeat where the skin has been ripped of my palms, with flecks of dirty in the blood that drips down from the scratches onto the floor.

As I raise my head up and I notice the street light above me is flittering on and off like fairy lights around a Christmas tree, it seems as if it trying to get my attention, I stare at the orangey glow all most hypnotised by a warmth that pours down on me, the rays from the blinking light flutter down and rest on my face, then I hear her.

I would recognise her soft gentle voice in a crowd of hundreds because its bunt in my memories for always "Oscar shall we wave at the Queens and princess as they go by, have you got your bag of coins for us to toss".

My mother loved the Whitstable carnival, a tradition she had enjoyed since she was a girl. The wonderful colourful floats that glide by, as the music and children squeals fill the air. Queens and princesses from local areas smiling and waving at the children's if they were for one-day royalty, as the little girls' watch in awe and the boys toss their coins on to the float. From proud local businesses, majorettes to the brass bands, everyone either played their part of watched on from the sidelines. Every year my mother would insist on watching from the same spot; outside her beloved Whitstable castle; I know where Dad is.

As I reach Whitstable castle the usual strong cast iron gates were ripped open, the chains have been ripped open and slung on the floor as if it was wrapping paper from a birthday present.

Inside the grounds it's mesmerising, beautiful flowers blooming all around, trees so high and strong watching over the town and its residents.

As I walk in, stepping into the darkness the eerie silence chills me to my bone, this is a place that is usually full of such life, children playing in the park, couples hand in hand strolling through the park, people sat on the grass enjoying their lunch break.

The warmth and light are gone, it's replaced by darkness and shadows that dart around like creatures of the night.

As I walk up I see Dad sat on the bench that overlooks the wishing well beside him is Liten Vampyr and HER.

Dad has not noticed me but I can already see Liten Vampyr eyes fixated on me with every step I take.

The gravel that crunches under my feet alerts Dad to my arrival, his face startled as if awoken from a nightmare looks terrified at my presence here.

Liten Vampyr goes to speak but I cut her down "Don't, you've done enough" I turn in Dad "So what's the plan Dad".

His heads slumps with shame at his only son witnessing what he's considering too; an eye for an eye.

HER face is bloodied, bruised, she is shaking uncontrollably, she's clearly put up a fight but ultimately she's no match for Liten Vampyr.

Sat in front of me is the woman who took my mother's life, she is not scary or a monster, she's not strong or intimidating; she is just a woman, a woman who got in her car and decided to answer the phone whilst driving instead of ignoring it.

My mother paid for HER phone call with her life, SHE didn't see my mum pulling out and collided straight into her.

Mum died on the scene instantly, SHE got out without a scratch or mark on her.

This is the wrong he wants to right but at what cost.
