Kao's POV

Usually, Mrs. Namwirote would join me for breakfast, lunch and dinner, except for when I am at university and I have to eat my lunch in the cafeteria.

Today, I was all alone at the breakfast table.

"Do you know where Mrs. Namwirote is?" I asked Rose as she poured some orange juice into my glass.

"She left early for the hospital today," Rose informed me, "today is when Cooheart is getting discharged from the hospital and Mrs. Namwirote has a lot of discharge papers to sign."

"Do you know what time Cooheart is getting discharged?" I asked before taking a sip of my orange juice.

"I don't know exactly but Mrs. Namwirote said she and Cooheart will be back a little after lunch," Rose replied.

Damn, if I didn't have an important exam scheduled today in Child Development I would have skipped my class to help Mrs. Namwirote bring Cooheart home.

I thanked Rose for the breakfast and prepared myself to walk to university.

I decided to call my father as I was walking.

"What's up, son, why are you calling me this early in the morning?"

My dad did not even give me a chance to say hello. He's a very busy business executive and he is always pressed for time.

"I need your advice, dad."

"I'm listening," he said.

"Dad, I know that before I came to this city, we had decided that it was not practical for me to bring my car here since the university is within walking distance from Mrs. Namwirote's house, plus parking is always tricky within the campus, however if I need to get around the city, like going to the mall or to the hospital......"

"Wait," my dad interrupted me, "why would you mention the hospital. Are you alright?"

My dad's voice took on a worried tone.

"Oh, yes, yes, dad, I'm alright," I hastened to reassure him, "I just meant in case I need to go to the hospital, in case I get really sick."

"That shouldn't be your problem. Your landlady should take care of bringing you there but I'm hoping that won't have to happen. Stop talking about going to a hospital," my dad was starting to sound impatient.

"Okay, okay, dad," I said quickly to calm him down, "but I was thinking of going home this coming Sunday to take my car and bringing it here."

"If you think it's necessary then go ahead. That's your car. I won't stop you from using it. I just hope that you won't need it to go to a hospital. I want you to be healthy always, okay?" my dad sounded ready to get off the phone, "never skip a meal and stay away from alcohol. Alcohol and studies don't mix."

"Yes, dad," I said respectfully, "I'll be home this Sunday."

"Okay, son, take care now."

"You too, dad, see you Sunday."

I tried to do my best on my Child Development exam. I was lucky to know all the answers to the questions. There seemed to be some trick questions which I tried my best to decipher so that I could get to the right answer.

When my last period in the morning ended, I made my way to the cafeteria. The cafeteria was bustling with the sound of students chatting and occasionally yelling at each other.

I joined the end of the line and waited for my turn to pick up a tray and take some utensils from a metal container.

I asked the staff behind the counter to give me an order of spinach lasagna and a can of lemon iced tea.

After I paid the cashier at the other end of the counter, I looked around for an empty table. There didn't seem to be any. Every single one was occupied.

I walked back towards the other end of the counter where there was an empty space to rest my tray while waiting for a table to become vacant.

Not too far from me, I saw three students get up from a table and bring their used dishes to the assigned receptacle for them. There was one other student who was left behind at the table, still eating his lunch.

I quickly approached him and asked if I could share his table.

He nodded without looking at me and then when I set my tray on the table he looked up and his bored expression changed to sudden recognition.

"I know you," he said.

"I don't think so," I countered, "I've never met you before until now."

"You're right, you've never met me, but I've seen you several times from afar when I'm leaving the dorm and you're walking into Mrs. Namwirote's house. Are you her son?"

"Oh, no, no, I'm not her son," I replied, "I'm just renting a room in her house."

"What???" he had a mixed expression of surprise and something like being annoyed, "how did you manage to do that? Did you offer double the rent that my dorm mates are paying her?"

"I'm afraid I cannot discuss my rent fee with you," I said, "I was just lucky that her son was abroad at the time that I approached her so her son's room was vacant and she agreed to rent it out to me."

"Wow, she must be desperate for money," he said in a disgusted tone.

"Don't say that," I said, starting to get annoyed myself, "she did it to me as a favor. I pleaded with her because I'm not from this city so it would have been very hard for me to find my way to the university, being unfamiliar with the city streets."

"You are one lucky guy then," he said, taking a long swig from his can of a lemon lime soda before setting it down heavily on the table. He then stood up and left me without a single polite word.

When I got back to Mrs. Namwirote's house, I was just in time for dinner.

Thursday was my busiest school day. It was the day that was filled with several classes that I needed to attend.

Rose greeted me when I buzzed at the door.

"Come and have dinner after you have settled down in your room," she said.

"Will Mrs. Namwirote and Cooheart be joining me for dinner?" I asked.

"Not this evening," Rose informed me, "I will be bringing Cooheart's dinner into Mrs. Namwirote's office. Cooheart is resting on the office couch right now because it is more comfortable than his folding bed in the hallway."

Without stopping to drop my backpack in my room, I went ahead and knocked on Mrs. Namwirote's office and then opened the door and walked in.

Mrs. Namwirote and Cooheart were in the middle of a conversation and they stopped talking and looked at me, waiting for me to say something.

"I... I... I'm sorry to interrupt but I came to offer my bed to Cooheart," I said.

"No, no, you can't do that," Cooheart said, while Mrs. Namwirote was silent, looking undecided.

"I insist," I said, "I will take the folding bed in the hallway. Cooheart can use my bed until he is fully recovered."

"You really don't have to do that," said Cooheart, "I was thinking of using this couch as my temporary bed until I fully recover."

"Please," I was pleading now. I was feeling guilty of taking over his room while he was recuperating from his motor crash injuries.

Mrs. Namwirote who had been quiet all this time, suddenly spoke up.

"I have an idea," she said slowly, as if waiting for her idea to form fully in her brain, "since Cooheart's bed is wide enough for two people, why don't you just share it."
