Third Person POV
Cooheart gripped the armrest of his wheelchair as he waited for the nurse to open the door to Title's room. He braced himself for any unsettling image of his best friend lying on his hospital bed.
The nurse knocked briefly on the door before pushing it wide open and then pushed Cooheart's wheelchair into the room.
Title was covered up to his neck with the spotless white hospital linen. His head was covered with bandages with only his eyes showing through. His eyes were closed. An IV pole was standing on the other side of the bed. The end of the catheter that was attached to the IV bag was taped to Title's left wrist.
The nurse pushed Cooheart's wheelchair closer to Title's bed.
Cooheart searched for Title's hand under the covers. He held it tight when he found it.
"Title?" Cooheart spoke tentatively.
Title's eyes fluttered open.
Cooheart felt Title squeeze his hand.
"Can you hear me, sweetheart?" Cooheart asked leaning towards Title.
Title did not answer. His chest started to heave and tears were flowing and wetting the bandages.
"We survived. That's all that matters," Cooheart said, holding back his tears, trying to be brave in front of Title, "we will both recover fast and then we will be back on our feet and doing fun things together again."
Cooheart felt Title's hand squeezing his once more. Cooheart knew that Title could talk since the nurse had informed him that Title had been asking for him. Cooheart was guessing that Title was too emotional to say anything at this time.
"I will leave you here for now with your friend," said the nurse, "just press the call button when you want to go back to your room."
"Thank you," said Cooheart.
The nurse handed Cooheart the cord to which the call button was attached and then left the room.
Cooheart leaned closer towards Title.
"Title... sweetheart..." Cooheart stopped and wondered if he should say to Title what he was about to say.
At the exact same time he heard Title saying "Cooheart... Cooheart... I want you to know... I... I think you should know... you should know that..."
Suddenly there was a knock on the door and a different nurse walked in. She was carrying a small tray with a syringe and an alcohol swab on it. She tore open the alcohol pack and took out the swab with her gloved hands. She then wiped the injection port of the IV bag with the alcohol swab before sticking the syringe into the port.
"This is the second dose of your antibiotic," the nurse informed Title while slowly and carefully pushing the plunger of the syringe.
In a few seconds all the contents of the syringe had been injected into the IV bag.
After the nurse left, there was an awkward silence between Cooheart and Title.
"You were saying something..." Cooheart started to say after a while.
Title remained silent but his chest was heaving again.
"Thank you for coming to see me even though you're still recuperating yourself," Title said.
"Was that what you were trying to tell me earlier?" Cooheart asked.
Title let out a heavy sigh. He was silent for a long time.
"I think it's best to leave some things unsaid for now," he eventually said.
It was Cooheart's turn to let out a sigh.
"Very well," said Cooheart, pushing the call button for a nurse, "I'm feeling tired now. I need to go back to my room."
There was a brief knock at the door and the same nurse who had pushed Cooheart's wheelchair came in.
"Are you ready to go back to your room, sir?"
"Yes, I am," Cooheart replied.
The nurse had just turned the wheelchair around towards the door when Title called out, "Cooheart, you were trying to tell me something earlier yourself."
Cooheart gently shook his head.
"It can wait," he replied and motioned for the nurse to push him out the door.
Back in Kao's room, Kao tried to concentrate on finishing the assignment that his professor had assigned to him and the rest of his class.
Kao could not keep from thinking back to the short but meaningful conversation he had with Nicky during the drive back from the hospital.
Nicky had asked him if he thought that Cooheart was a gorgeous person and he found himself unable to face the truth, the truth that indeed he found Cooheart to be a most attractive person.
He shook his head and tried to focus on his assignment once more.
In the middle of typing on his keyboard, he recalled the last unsettling statement that Nicky made just before he stepped out of Nicky's car.
"I mean we're both trying to eliminate Title, right?"
The question had shocked Kao to the core, making him almost lose his balance. He had been unable to give any reply to Nicky. He just watched Nicky drive away. Kao remembered pursing his lips when he saw Nicky's facial expression. He had a wide grin on his face.
Kao shook his head once more.
Nicky was wrong. Kao wasn't just going to eliminate Title. He was going to eliminate Nicky as well.
Kao looked at all the jumbled characters on his computer screen. He had unconsciously made a keyboard smash.
Shit, his professor would give him an F on this assignment if he had accidentally sent it off to him.
