Third Person POV

With a tearful smile, Mrs. Namwirote waved goodbye to her only son, Cooheart, and continued to watch him as he entered the airport gate that would take him to the waiting area before boarding his plane to the US where he had enrolled for his university studies.

Her son Cooheart, or Earth, as his closest friends called him, had left two weeks early to give himself time to settle in his new environment before school started. She had arranged for Cooheart to live with her older brother who had a small restaurant in LA that offered Thai cuisine.

Mrs. Namwirote drove herself back home from the airport with a heavy heart. She knew that she was going to miss her Cooheart very much, but at the same time she wanted to help him pursue his dream of being a successful architect and he had chosen a well known university abroad that offered the architectural course.

It was an hour and a half drive back to her house and when she got home, she was surprised to see an unfamiliar expensive brand SUV parked in front of her building.

Mrs. Namwirote owned a building which originally had been a large residential house but which she had just recently converted into a small ten unit off campus dormitory.

Her house was conveniently located just a few minutes walk from a well known Thai university and when she advertised the availability of ten units that could accommodate two students in one room, all units were immediately snapped up.

Even after she had placed an announcement that she had no more units available for occupancy, her phone continued to ring with inquiries from prospective student occupants.

After she parked her car in her reserved spot, she noticed two men who looked like they were father and son, get out of the SUV and approach her.

The older man introduced himself as Mr. Dechaphatthanakun and introduced his son as Kao.

"I understand that you no longer have any available unit for my son to stay but I'm really desperate to have him housed in a place very close to the university because he is a transferee from another city far from here and he is not yet familiar with the streets in this city. I'm really hoping that you could put him up temporarily in any available room you might have in your private residence until someone vacates any of the units that are currently occupied," the father pleaded with Mrs. Namwirote.

Mrs. Namwirote's thoughts went back to her own son. She wouldn't want Cooheart to have to experience something like what this student was facing, looking desperately for a room to board close to the university.

"You still have two weeks left before classes start," said Mrs. Namwirote, addressing Kao directly, "why don't you leave me your number and I will call you if I can get permission from my son to let you use his room while he is away. He just left today to study abroad."

"Is it possible for you to contact him as soon as he lands?" the father begged, "the sooner we know, the sooner we would have time to look for other places if your son decides against renting his room out."

"I will do that," Mrs. Namwirote promised, trying to place herself in the father's shoes.

The father thanked her with a hopeful smile and then gave her his number as well as his son Kao's contact number.

After Mrs. Namwirote let herself into her residence which was attached to the off campus dormitory building, she busied herself with preparing dinner. She had a live-in domestic helper who could cook for her but she preferred to cook her own and her son's meals.

Early the following morning, she was awakened by her phone ringing. She sleepily reached for her phone which was on her bedside table.

She saw on her phone screen that it was Cooheart calling. He must have landed already. She swiped her phone screen.

"Mom!" she heard him say before she could say anything, "I just landed at LAX! I'm just waiting for my luggage to appear in the carousel."

"Okay, son, thanks for letting me know that you landed safely. Call me again when you see your Uncle Lam in the arrival area."

"I will do so, mom. I love you!"

"I love you too, son."

Mrs. Namwirote cut the call and sat up in bed. She glanced at the digital clock on her bedside table. It was half past six in the morning. She was tempted to stay in bed a little while longer but decided against it.

After she finished her morning rituals, she got out of her bathroom, still in her bathrobe with a towel wrapped around her head.

She had barely gotten into her grey skirt and pink blouse when her phone started to ring. She walked over to her bedside table to pick it up. It was her brother Lam calling.

She swiped her phone screen and put the phone to her ear. "P'Lam."

"How are you, sis?" she heard her brother ask.

"I'm doing fine, and yourself?"

"I'm doing great! Cooheart and I are on our way to the parking lot and soon I will be driving him back to my place."

"P'Lam, thank you so much for letting my son live with you while he's studying there."

"Not a problem at all, sis."

"He could help you with your restaurant business when he doesn't have classes, P'Lam."

"Don't worry about a thing, sis. Listen, we have to go. I will let Cooheart talk to you once we get to my house."

"Good plan. Thank you so much. Love you, P'Lam."

"Love you too, sis. Bye now."

After Mrs. Namwirote finished combing her hair and putting on minimal makeup on her face, she made her way to the kitchen. She was not a heavy breakfast eater. She fixed herself some fragrant green tea and a piece of toast on which she thinly applied some marmalade.

When she finished breakfast, she thanked her domestic helper who had come to take her used cup and plate and utensils to wash.

She wondered how she was going to convince Cooheart to agree to temporarily let out his room while he was away at university. She wasn't too sure that Cooheart would agree.

She walked towards a small office room adjacent to her living room. She did all her office matters pertaining to the running of her small dormitory business there.

She had barely sat on her office chair when her phone started to ring. It was Cooheart. He must have arrived with P'Lam at P'Lam's house already.

"Hi, mom!" Cooheart said as soon as she swiped her phone screen.

"How are you doing, son?"

"I just got settled in my room! Uncle Lam gave me my very own room. It's a little smaller than the one I have back home but I have a comfortable bed to sleep in and that's all that matters. He also provided me with a study table and chair. Oh, and there's even an empty bookshelf above my study table where I can place my book. I have a small closet to hang my clothes in and the door of the closet is a full length mirror. I will be sharing the bathroom with Uncle Lam and Aunt Lily. I don't know why they never had children. I would have wanted a cousin my age to talk to while I'm here. Do you know why..."

Mrs. Namwirote had to interrupt her son's incessant talking.

"Listen, Cooheart, I'm so glad that you are happy with your living situation there. I have something very important and urgent to discuss with you right now."

"Mom, you are scaring me."

"Don't be, son, it's just a matter about your room over here."

"What about my room, mom?"

"Listen, son, you are aware that even before you left, all the units in our building are now all fully occupied, right?"

"Right..." Cooheart replied in a cautious tone, wondering a little nervously what his mother was going to put forward to him.

"Well, yesterday evening after I got home from sending you off at the airport, a father and son approached me and the father begged me to let his son rent a place in our private quarters because there are no more units available at the dorm."

"Mom," Cooheart said before his mom could continue, "I know where you're going with this. And, no, please, mom, don't give my room to that student. He is a stranger to us. We never know if he is a good and trustworthy person or not."

"Actually, son, you're forgetting that I always include a background check fee and if the background check comes back clean, then there shouldn't be a problem."

"Listen, son," Mrs. Namwirote continued before Cooheart could protest, "the reason that I am inclined to help out this young man is because I was thinking that if you had been in the same situation, I would want for someone to help you out as well."

Cooheart thought long and hard. He was silent for a significant amount of time while his mother waited anxiously for his decision.

"Very well, mother, I trust your decision," Cooheart finally said, "please make sure to put away all my stuff in the big extra closet that's in your room."

"Did you want me to put down your picture frames that are nailed to the wall?" Mrs. Namwirote asked her son.

"Umm... since the student will only be there temporarily, maybe there's no need for you to go through all that trouble," Cooheart replied.

As soon as her call with her son ended, Mrs. Namwirote reached for the piece of paper where Mr. Dechaphatthanakun had written his and his son's contact number.
