Poem 40 {Dream A Little Dream}
My dreams always held you and me.
You were my prince and you'd sweep me off my feet.
Although you decided that I wasn't your princess;
I wasn't breath taking
Nor was I girl you wanted to wake up beside every morning
When the sun was shining so bright.
I was just a girl.
I held no light, no ground;
I was just another person from the past.
So things parted and my fairy tale was put on hold
And it became one of my dreams
But a dream that I'd never hold.
You began yours,
You had numerous
And every single one of them made you smile and shine,
You were full of happiness.
I was left looking on knowing that I'd never have that.
It wasn't mine, and I was no princess.
So I allowed myself to break off all dreams and turned away
And awoke to reality;
I was going to wake alone every morning,
I was never going to be held tight,
And I was never going to be swept off my feet
And hear my prince whisper in my ear;
'Oh marry me my dear'
Watching couples walk past,
Hand in hand and smiling
And watching girls shine and snuggle
Into their prince charming
Bought a stab of jealousy and so much desire to me.
It left me trembling and crying.
Standing on the edge of the scene
I watched miserably as all walked off into the sunset.
Turning my back I walked in the opposite direction,
Alone.
I was bought to a halt as a hand wrapped around my wrist.
With my eyes clenched tight I slowly came around.
I opened my eyes to beauty,
I wasn't uncomfortable; I was home.
You tilted your head to the side
And a warm and subtle smile spread on those lips.
I stood warmed and whole.
And I tried to tell myself that it wasn't and shouldn't be.
I was just going to fall, crashing back down again.
Though you tugged softly on my hand
And I was just in front of you and close,
I could feel your ticklish breath on my nose
And my eyes were level with those lips.
Out of breath, you reached up and pulled that strand of hair behind my ear
And so softly and tenderly you cupped my face.
Without a word he understood;
I'd lost faith and had been burned.
Silent tears fell.
You stunned me by not leaving
But whispering against my lips
'Oh marry me my dear'
