Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Leaf's jaw dropped. The female was beautiful. She had a silvery-white coat with pale shades of Black. Her eyes were as pure and dangerous as ice.

"Did you hear me?"

Leaf nodded. "Um... uh... yeah, you can have some." The she-wolf wagged her tail.

"Thanks. I'm Blossom. Did you catch this yourself?" Leaf shook his head, still in awe. Blossom narrowed her blue eyes.

"Then who did? Is your Pack around here somewhere?" She looked around and sniffed the air.

"No. I'm a... a dispersal wolf. My name's Leaf." The words felt strange coming out of his mouth.

"I-I fought a cougar for this carcass. You can have it all if you want." Technically, that wasn't true, and Blossom knew that.

"Then why don't you have any claw marks on you?" Leaf shrugged.

"It was a quick battle."

Blossom rolled her eyes.

"Yeah. Sure. You should probably eat some of this elk, too. You're awfully small." Leaf sighed, and dove in. When the two wolves had eaten their fill, they curled up for a nap. It was starting to get dark. Leaf silently thanked the Sky Pack and dozed off. When he woke, he saw that Blossom's back was pressed against his. He sighed peacefully. And went back to sleep.

The wolf was back. This time it was chasing Blossom and Leaf.

"Wait for me!" Blossom called. He heard a snap, a snarl, and all was silent. Blossom was dead, and he was all alone. The black wolf's red eyes bored into his. "Watch your back, Leaf. Or better yet, watch your PACK. I'm coming for you."

Leaf woke, panting. He turned around and saw Blossom staring at him, looking worried.

"Are you ok, Leaf?" He nodded shakily.

"Yeah. Just... a bad dream."

Blossom nodded.

"I hate those. One time I had one where I was being chased by an elk." She laughed. Leaf wolf-smiled weakly. Blossom jumped up, her blue eyes shining. "Hey! I have an idea! Let's go hunting!"

Leaf got up. He wasn't quite in the mood, but he liked Blossom. He LIKE liked Blossom. So he said,

"Sure. Sounds fun." The two wolves ran together, side by side. He ran ahead a little, but somehow Blossom always got in front. That wasn't right. He was a male wolf. He was supposed to be ahead of her. Blossom rolled her eyes.

"Don't tell me you're that kind of wolf." He was confused. The two stopped. Blossom stared at Leaf.

"I could fight you, and I could win. Just because I'm a female doesn't mean you're the boss of me." Her eyes bored into his. He tried to stare her down, but it was no use. He blinked and looked away.

"If you want to be my mate, you can't act like this. We can be equals, or we can be nothing." Leaf definitely wanted to be her mate. More than anything. And what she said did make sense. He nodded slowly.

"I understand, Blossom. I'm sorry. I do want to be your mate. A lot. We can be equals."

Blossom's eyes softened. "Thank you, Leaf. You don't know how much this means to me." She nuzzled him. Leaf breathed in her scent. Pine needles. Rain. Elk. It was a beautiful conglomeration of scents.

"Now. Let's go hunting!"

We have officialy introduced the character Blossom! She is a favorite of mine. So, I like this scene, but I feel like I maybe got some of my facts wrong. I want this book to be realistic to the real Yellowstone wolves, while also adding my own twist. If you have any suggestions, please say so in the comments. Thanks!
