XIII.

Lira and Taka moved swiftly through the forest, the small lion cub safely clutched between Lira's jaws. The tiny body trembled, and its small whimpers served as a reminder of how vulnerable it was. Lira could feel Taka's gaze on her—heavy and suspicious—but she focused on finding a safe place for the cub. The forest seemed to close in around them, the trees pressing tighter and the shadows growing deeper, but they had no time to stop. Not yet.

Suddenly, movement flickered between the trees. A group of lionesses emerged, their golden fur shimmering in the sparse light filtering through the canopy. Sabari was among them, her eyes widening with relief and confusion as she spotted Lira and Taka. But when her gaze landed on the cub in Lira's mouth, her relief shifted into something else—something harder. She stepped forward, her ears pinned back and her tail lashing behind her.

"Lira?" Sabari's voice was sharp, but it trembled with suppressed fear and fury. "What is this? Why do you have my cub?"

Lira carefully placed the cub down on the ground, her movements slow and deliberate so as not to startle the little one. The cub whimpered and wobbled toward Sabari, who immediately bent down to inspect it with a mother's worried gaze. Lira stepped back, her ears flattened against her head and her tail low. She knew this wouldn't be easy.

"We found it," Lira said, her voice low and soothing. "Kiros and his forces chased you away, and the cub was left behind. We only wanted to make sure it was safe."

Sabari stared at her, eyes narrowing with suspicion. "You?" She turned to Taka, her gaze just as sharp. "And you? Why are you helping her? Why are you with her?"

Taka bristled, his eyes darting between Lira and Sabari. "I wasn't helping her," he said, his voice hard and defensive. "I followed her to see what she was planning. I don't trust her, and neither should you."

Sabari studied him, then turned her attention back to Lira. "What is going on here?" Her voice was now as sharp as a blade. "Why are you here, Lira? Why do you care about my cub?"

Lira took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she had to choose her words carefully. "I care because it's the right thing to do," she said, her voice firm, yet carrying a trace of vulnerability. "I know what it means to be caught in a battle that isn't your own. This cub doesn't deserve to suffer for our mistakes."

Sabari searched Lira's face, looking for truth in her words. But before she could respond, the silence was shattered by a distant, yet powerful roar. Lira and Taka exchanged glances, both knowing exactly what it meant. Kiros and Mufasa were still fighting, and it was only a matter of time before the conflict reached them.

"We don't have time for this," Taka said, his voice tense and urgent. "If we don't leave now, Kiros will find us. And if he does, none of us will survive."

Sabari hesitated, then looked down at her cub, who was now clinging to her fur. Her expression softened slightly. "I don't understand what's happening," she said, her voice now more vulnerable than angry. "But I know my cub is safe now, and that's all that matters."

Lira nodded, her heart heavy with a mix of relief and guilt. "We have to go," she said, her voice low and urgent. "Kiros won't stop until he gets what he wants."

Sabari nodded, meeting Lira's gaze with newfound respect. "Thank you," she said simply, her voice filled with gratitude that surprised Lira. "Thank you for saving my cub."

Lira nodded, but there was no time to reply. Behind them, the sound of crashing branches and heavy footsteps grew closer. Kiros was coming, and they had no time to waste.

"Come," Taka said, his voice sharp and insistent. "We need to go. Now."

Lira cast one last glance at Sabari and the cub, her heart filled with a bittersweet mix of hope and sorrow. Then, she turned and followed Taka, their steps swift and determined as they disappeared into the shadows of the forest. Behind them, she heard Sabari and the other lionesses retreat in the opposite direction, their steps light and quick.

But even as she ran, Lira knew this wasn't over. Kiros wouldn't give up so easily, and she still had a debt to settle. Yet, for now, as she ran through the forest with Taka at her side, she felt a small spark of hope. Maybe—just maybe—there was still a way out of the chaos.

SCENEBREAK

They continued through the forest, their steps quick yet cautious, avoiding any unnecessary noise. Lira still carried the lion cub gently in her mouth, its small whimpers having quieted to a soft, steady hum of exhaustion. Sabari led the way, her ears pricked and eyes sharp as she scanned for danger. Taka followed closely behind, his gaze flickering between the trees and glancing back, as if expecting to see Kiros or his followers appear at any moment.

Soon, they reached a small ledge, a natural terrace in the forest where the ground leveled out, giving them a brief respite from the dense undergrowth. There, on the edge of the ledge, sat one of the other lionesses. She held herself with a regal posture, despite the deep, red wound marring her side. She sat silently, her tongue moving steadily over the injury, her eyes half-closed in a mixture of pain and concentration.

Lira carefully placed the lion cub down by Sabari's paws, her movements gentle so as not to startle the little one. The cub whimpered softly, curling up close to Sabari, who immediately bent down to inspect it with a mother's worried gaze. Lira, however, padded over to the injured lioness, concern shining in her blue eyes.

"You're hurt," Lira said, her voice low and sympathetic. She eyed the large wound, its crimson edges glistening in the dim light. "That doesn't look good."

The lioness lifted her head, her eyes meeting Lira's with a mixture of pride and weariness. She shook her head, her voice rough yet unwavering. "It's just a scratch," she muttered, but there was a clear strain in her tone that betrayed the truth. "I've had worse."

Lira nodded, but she couldn't hide the worry in her gaze. She glanced over at Sabari, who had now settled beside the injured lioness, her expression mirroring Lira's concern.

"We need to find a safe place to rest," Lira said firmly. "If Kiros finds us here, we won't stand a chance."

Sabari nodded, her eyes darting between the wounded lioness and Lira. "We can't go far," she said, her voice laced with hesitation. "She needs time to heal, and the cub needs rest."

Taka, who had remained in the background, tensed and scanned the forest. "We don't have time to rest," he argued, his voice sharp with urgency. "Kiros isn't far behind, and if we stop now, he'll find us."

Lira stared at him, frustration warring with understanding in her eyes. She knew he was right, but she couldn't ignore the needs of the wounded and the weak.

"We can't let them die, Taka," she said, her voice firm but calm. "We need to find another way."

Taka narrowed his eyes, suspicion flickering in his gaze. "And what do you suggest?" he asked, his tone edged with sarcasm. "Should we carry them on our backs?"

Lira took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her chest. She had to find a way to balance everyone's needs, but time was not on their side. She looked at the injured lioness, then at Sabari and the cub.

"We need a hiding place," she said with quiet determination. "Somewhere we can rest and plan our next move."

Sabari nodded, something like newfound respect flashing in her eyes. "There's a cave not far from here," she said quickly. "It's well hidden. We can stay there until we figure out what to do."

A flicker of hope sparked in Lira's chest. "Then let's go," she said. "We don't have time to waste."

Taka stared at her, his expression unreadable. But after a moment, he sighed and nodded, his voice low with resignation. "Fine," he muttered. "But if this goes wrong, it's on you."

Lira met his gaze with a steady look, surprising him with the quiet steel in her eyes. "I'll take responsibility," she said. "But we have to move now."

With the wounded lioness supported between them and the cub safely tucked in Sabari's care, they began making their way toward the cave. The forest seemed to close in around them, the trees thick and the shadows deep, but there was no time to hesitate.

Behind them, the distant sound of snapping branches and heavy footfalls echoed through the trees.

Kiros was coming.

And they had no time to lose.

Yet even as they ran, Lira knew this wasn't over. Kiros wouldn't give up so easily. She still had a score to settle with him.

But for now, as she raced through the forest with Taka at her side and the wounded in their care, she allowed herself the smallest glimmer of hope.

Maybe—just maybe—there was still a way out of this chaos.
