Liquid Courage
Happy New Years! I should really be updating my other fanfics instead of doing this but I gave poor self control so here we are. Enjoy this short story!
_________
Sirius was only slightly buzzed. Tipsy at most. He wasn't planning on getting black-out drunk, but after seeing someone flirting with Remus, he thought it wasn't such a bad idea.
He glared from his corner of the large room, holding a bottle of fire whiskey in one hand and an unlit cigarette in the other.
"Glaring at him wont get him to notice you," James said from beside Sirius, causing Sirius to jump.
"What? No. What? I'm not-" he cut himself short with a sigh- "I know."
"Go talk to him," James pushed, "it's been a month, Sirius."
"He's still angry at me, James. And I don't blame him." Of course Sirius was referring to the 'prank' he pulled on Snape that went... too far.
The Incident, he likes to call it. When he pushed Snape to go in the whomping Willow to witness Remus transform because he was being nosey.
Sirius cringed at the memory and tore his eyes off of Remus.
"He's not going to he mad at you forever."
"I would be," Sirius scoffed, "what I did was fucked up. I deserve to be friendless. I dont even know why you're talking to me right now. Go talk to Remus."
James rolled his eyes at his bestfriend. "Right. You're just a ball of self-pity. I don't like this negative energy coming off you, so I'm gunna go out-drink Malfoy." He stated, walking towards the bar.
He paused halfway there, "just talk to him, Sirius."
Sirius looked down at the bottle of Fire Whiskey in his hand, before popping off the lid and downing it.
He was going to need some liquid courage if he was going to talk to Remus at all.
__
One bottle of Fire Whiskey later, Sirius was pretty drunk. Not quite black out yet, a few more shots would achieve that, but it wasn't what he wanted. So, in his drunken haze, he managed to find Remus.
The werewolf was leaned against a wall, a beer in hand and talking to Lily Evan's. A girl who Sirius was quite certain hated him, and he wouldn't blame her. He hates himself for what he did too.
He stumbled over to Remus, and, once he got there, tripped on his own two feet and fell right into the taller boy.
Remus gasped at the sudden body on him as he gripped Sirius' hips in an attempt to steady him, "Sirius- what the hell."
Sirius groaned, "m'not that drunk, I just fell. I swear." He muttered, not bothering to move from his current position.
The scent of chocolate and some sort of cologne that could only be linked to Remus was intoxicating-- and addicting.
"I'll... leave you two alone," Lily said awkwardly. She gave a soft, reassuring smile to Remus before heading off.
"Sirius, get up." Remus ordered.
"That's the second time you've said my name in a month," Sirius mumbled, still not making an attempt to move.
"Sirius." Remus stressed. "Get. Up."
Sirius squeezed his eyes shut for a second, imagining he was somewhere else before The Incident, and wasn't at a party, drunk, and instead of being ordered to get off Remus, he was being asked to stay.
His fantasy was short lived when Remus hissed his name again.
"Sirius. This isn't funny. Get up."
Sirius groaned and stood up straight, but didn't back away. No, he met Remus' eyes and-- Merlin-- those eyes. Those amber eyes he hasn't seen face-to-face for a month. He nearly forgot how much he loved them.
"Your eyes..." Sirius whispered, sober him begging him to shut the fuck up.
Sirius brought his hands up to gently cup Remus' cheeks, their noses just barely touching, "they're beautiful." He paused. "I miss you."
He felt Remus' cheeks heat up under his hands, but Remus simply rolled his eyes, "Sirius, you're drunk."
Sirius was suddenly aware of what he was doing. Suddenly aware of how close he and Remus were-- the closest they've been in a month. Suddenly aware that he wasn't as drunk as he thought, and with his lack of drunkenness, not as brave as he thought either.
He immediately pushed himself off Remus, "shit- Remus- I- I'm sorry- I-" he cut himself off and weaved a hand through his hair- "I'll go."
He didn't catch the look of disappointment in Remus' eyes as he left to God knows where.
__
"Remus," James spoke, ripping Remus from his thoughts.
He hasn't stopped staring at the place Sirius disappeared to since he left.
"I saw what happened, you okay?" James continued, staring at his friend with worry.
"Mmhm." Was all Remus replied with.
"Are you sure?" James pushed.
Remus finally tore his eyes off the spot he'd been staring at to look at James, "no, James, I'm not sure. Because just a few minutes ago was the most happy I've felt in the past month."
James couldn't help but let a sad smile show, "oh, well, go talk to him."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because."
"Because you're petty?"
Remus glared at him, "no, because Sirius nearly ruined my fucking life, James. That's not something I can just forgive."
James took a step back at the sudden harshness in Remus' tone, but he didn't back down. "Yeah, he did. And he regretted it immediately afterwards. And he's barely slept this past month trying to find ways to make it up to you. He even talked to Snape personally."
"Look, I'm not trying to excuse the thing he did, Moony, but everyone makes mistakes. His was a pretty big mistake, but even you admit that you miss him. Sirius is a mess, and so are you. Just... talk to him, Remus."
Remus sighed, "it's not that easy, James."
"No, but atleast think about it. You don't have to forgive him, just... talk."
And so, after he was sure James was out of sight, Remus went looking for Sirius.
___
It took him an hour, but Remus finally managed to find Sirius. He was sat on top of the roof; legs dangling off the edge and holding a cigarette between his lips. It looked to him that Sirius managed to empty half the box of cigarettes in one sitting.
Remus shivered as a crisp breeze blew past him; the scent of winter filling his nostrils, and he wondered if he should just head back inside.
He hesitated, before he slowly made his way to Sirius, "smoking isn't very good for you," he spoke, sitting next to Sirius.
Sirius jumped at the sudden voice, and when Remus met his eyes, he felt a pang of guilt hit his gut.
Those cold, grey eyes of his were filled to the rim with self hate. And then- Remus noticed the unhealthy black circles that were placed under his eyes.
"I-" Sirius stared at the cigarette in his hand- "yeah. I know." He sighed, flicking it away.
He moved over so they weren't as close, and for a moment there was just silence. But then, Sirius broke it.
"I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable earlier..." he spoke, his voice just above a whisper. "I just- I missed you. And... I was a little drunk, so... y'know. Liquid courage and all."
Remus stayed quiet, not really knowing what to say.
"I- Re, I also need you to know... I'm sorry about what I did. I know I apologized so many times and you think it doesn't mean anything, but..." Sirius paused, not once looking Remus in the eyes in fear they'd be as cold as before. "I am truly sorry."
A beat of silence.
"I've missed you too." Remus finally spoke.
Sirius shot his head up at that, a smile slipping onto his appearance, "you- really?"
Remus rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but to smile back, "of course, idiot. Of course I did." He looked away. "You coming up to me a while ago... it was the first time in a while I felt truly happy and... at first I was angry. But now..."
He looked back to meet Sirius' eyes; the same eyes he's fallen inlove with time and time again. "You do things to me, Sirius Black."
Sirius felt his cheeks go crimson, "oh, you have no idea the things you do to me, Remus."
Remus laughed and glanced up at the stars, still feeling Sirius' gaze on him.
"So... are we good?" Sirius asked hesitantly. "I mean- I understand if you still hate me- but-"
Remus cut Sirius off, "I never hated you." He looked back at him. "Never. Not once. I so badly wanted to hate you but I couldn't. I never will be able to hate you."
Sirius let go of a short laugh, "I'd hate me if I were in your position."
"Would you hate me if I did what you did to you?" Remus asked.
Sirius glanced away. "...no." another short laugh. "Then again, I'm hopelessly inlove with you so--" he cut himself off, only now realizing what he said.
Fear striked him as he quickly stumbled to his feet, obviously more drunk than he originally thought, "I- I have to-"
The sound of cheering was heard from below-- it was almost midnight.
Remus followed his lead, completley shocked, "Sirius-- wait--"
"God, Remus, I fucked up again, didn't I? I'm sorry- I-" he was rambling now, trying to get as far away from Remus as he possibly could.
"Sirius," Remus cut his rambling off and grabbed his wrist, pulling him into him.
Remus cold fingers cupped Sirius' cheeks, "I'm... We're in the same boat."
Sirius relaxed, before a grin quickly took over his face, "you're-"
"Inlove with you, yes," Remus breathed.
He heard the countdown from downstairs.
"Six... five..."
"Kiss me." Remus ordered.
"Four..."
"What- Remus- are you-"
"Three..."
"Please."
"Two..."
Sirius, without a second thought, pushed his lips into Remus'.
"One...!"
Everyone cheered-- Sirius almost felt like they were cheering for he and Remus. And, if that weren't clichè enough, fireworks burst through the air; colouring their surroundings in blues and greens and reds.
Sirius couldn't care less about the fireworks, though. No, he was perfectly content with his lips on Remus', and currently, nothing else mattered.
