The water was clear. Cameron sat on a bench in a small park and watched as the long hairs of his painting brush swayed with each stroke of colors, decorating the piece of clean, white canvas. He mixed the green of the grass, blue of the sky, purple of the playground set, and the yellow of the sun, swirling them around as the pink of lips and the light brown of eyes emerged on the picture. The girl was wearing a soft purple shirt, her hands placed gently at her sides. Cameron couldn't help but smile at the girl's blithe expressions. Just as he was about to paint her hands, which were to be placed on her lap, he paused.
How do I paint such a delicate body part with accurate details? he thought, looking around for real-life references. Ah...everyone seems so busy. I wish I could ask someone to model for me.
Just as he was about to pull out his phone, a girl wearing a blue summer dress and silver earrings walked by his painting, taking a short break during her walk. Every head turned as she strode by. Cameron looked up just in time to spot his perfect model. Other than the clothes she was wearing, the girl was the spitting image of his painting. Although he wasn't very good at socializing, he would anything to get a live version of his painting.
"Hey." He hastily stood up from his painting stool. "My name is Cameron Williams, I'm a traditional painter and portrait photographer. I happened to be working on a painting and my subject is very similar in terms of appearance to you. I was wondering if you would be willing to model for me. It'll take at most half an hour."
"Of course!" She turned her head, sunlight gleaming across her brown highlighted hair. She had very long eyelashes. "Name's Valentina Rivera. I love photography as well, and you're in luck because I happen to be a professional model."
She's a... whatnow? Did she say she was a model? Cameron's eyes widened.
The painter shyly motioned towards another stool that he set up for her, set directly in front of his canvas so that he would have a good view at the way her hands would be placed. Valentina sat her bag down and gracefully plopped down onto the stool. Just the way she sat herself down suggested that she had not been lying about being a model.
"Could you please turn your head to the left a little bit?" Cameron implored.
The model nodded, the corner of her eyes wrinkling slightly as she beamed, obeying Cameron's quiet requests. Valentina watched as Cameron fuzzed over his painting out of the corners of her eyes, wondering what she could to do help him.
"Is there a particular position that you want me to do?" she asked.
Cameron looked up at her, gears turning in his head to calculate a way to answer her question. "Um...not really..." he answered, glancing at his painting, "Well...it would be great if you could smile a bit more."
"Like... this?" Valentina's chapstick-glazed lips crafted into a smile.
"Yes, thank you." Maybe I should do a very quick sketch so that her cheeks don't start hurting or something, Cameron thought. "Okay, that's good," Cameron said as he finished sketching, "you can relax now."
He spent most of the time capturing the way wind blew across her face and how her toes dipped ever so slightly. It was hard. Painting a picture of a professional model was something that Cameron never thought he would have the chance to do. He thought about how much patience Valentina would have needed to sit so elegantly and motionlessly through a half-an-hour painting procedure , holding the same posture under the sun.
"Finished!" Cameron exclaimed, taking a step back to observe his masterpiece. "Thank you so much for your time! I really appreciate it. Wow... you must be a great model, to be able to sit still and poised for such a long period of time."
"No problem. May I take a look at your painting?"
"Of course," he replied, waving her in the direction of the picture, "I hope you'll like it." What if she doesn't like it? Would she be disappointed that she spent thirty minutes posing for a complete stranger?
"That is such a wonderful painting!" Valentina's smile broadened. "You're such a talented artist. It's been an honor to model for you. You're a highschool student, right?"
"Yeah, I'm in highschool," Cameron said. After a pause, he added, "You?"
"Yup, me too," Valentina sighed, "why is highschool such a burdensome place? Why can't we just take it easy? Modeling, photography, and homework are altogether too much work."
"I suppose..."
"Hey," The model said as she brushed her hair out of her face and punched Cameron lightly on the shoulder, "you're not very good with talking, are you?"
"I—" Cameron stuttered, attempting to defend himself.
"No worries! I can fix that for you," she laughed, her perfect white teeth peeking out, "We should definitely hang out more. It's been awhile since I've met such a good artist."
His cheeks turned red at Valentina's acclaim. Most people didn't recognize his art because of his quiet and reserved personality, and he was glad to find somebody who was willing to reach out to him and appreciate his work. Ah...I wish we could see each other more often. Didn't she say that she liked photography?
"Oh, wait did you say your name's like, Cameron Williams?" Valentina pulled her phone out.
"Yes...?" Cameron's response came out sounding like a question.
"Oh my lord! You're that guy who took the black-and-white picture of the golden gate bridge!" Excitement rose in Valentina's voice. Her eyes met Cameron's with awe. "I loved that photograph. It was so pretty."
"Wait a minute. How?" How did she know I took that picture? Questions bombarded Cameron's head. The only place it ever got displayed in was in my school's art showcase.
"It was in my high school's annual art showcase," Valentina explained, "I'm not particularly great at photography, but I love it. I love the process, especially the darkroom. I know it's a little outdated and everyone uses digital art, but watching films being developed is something I would like to do but never really have the right chemicals for."
"Really?"
The model nodded, her earrings rocking back-and-forth.
"That means...that we go to the same school."
"What?" Now it's Valentina's turn to be surprised. "What makes you say that?"
"That photograph...of the Golden Gate Bridge...was only displayed in the school's art showcase. I didn't published it anywhere else because I got a little lazy."
"Wait...then if we go to the same school..." she said slowly, "How...the hell do you not know me?"
Cameron stared blankly at her. What. Is she trying to say that she's popular or something?
"Ah, nevermind. Forget about that." Valentina dismissed her comment with a delicate wave of her hand.
"Either way, you should try to join the art club," the painter added on, trying to keep the conversation flowing.
"Yes I will," Valentina said eagerly, "Would you teach me?"
"Art? Painting?"
"I guess...just anything relevant to art."
"Let's make a deal then," Cameron suggested, "Would it be possible for you to continue modeling for me and in return, I teach you art?"
Valentina didn't reply as she took a picture of the painting and shoved her phone back into her expensive-looking white purse. You really are one hell of an artist, she thought amusedly.
"Deal on or off?" he pursued
"Deal's on," Valentina laughed, looking into the orange sky, "It's getting a bit late, I need to go home. I have so much homework I haven't finished yet. I will see you around... Cameron Williams"
"Okay. I have to finish getting my equipments back in my painting bag." Cameron waved goodbye to his model, watching her silhouette disappear.
I haven't said this words to someone in a long time, he thought silently.
Green of the grass. Pink of the sky. Purple of the playground set. Orange of the sun. Cameron watched as the colors on his painting brush drained out. The water was cloudy.
