Kind of prolog, I guess
"Aiken! Aiken! Look what I found!" Brooke toddled over to Aiken, tripping over her feet in her young excitement. Her hands were clasped around something.
Aiken's dirty blonde head popped out from the bushes that he was tending to.
"Hmm? What is it, Brooke?" Grinning ear to ear, Brooke opened her tiny hands to reveal a butterfly. Its colors were a beautiful kaleidoscope of vibrant blues, greens and reds. As if it had been asleep and woken up by the sunshine, it slowly began flapping its wings until it was flying up and away, probably towards the fields of flowers by the outsides of the walls.
"Bye, butterfly!" Brooke called, waving enthusiastically. Aiken smiled and waved with her, and both their identical sets of green eyes sparkled in the late afternoon sun.
Some years later
"--ooke! Brooke! Wake up, Brooke!" She supressedva groan, realizing she was about to be 'treated' to Aiken's awakening ritual of annoying the **** out of you until you got up. True to form, he started to poke her cheeks, squishing her face in odd ways. "You know I'm gonna keep doing this until you get up!" he sang. She groaned.
"Alright, alright! Off! Off, I say!!!" Brooke said. Spry as a cat, Aiken sprung up off her bed, grinning like a Cheshire.
"Big day ahead of us, sis! Lots a work to be done, so no dallying, now!" he called, strolling out of the room as if it was a Sunday afternoon and not the wee hours of the morning. Brooke groaned again and got ready for work.
She slid into her off-white shirt and skirt and put on a red vest that had served her well through the years. She laced up her boots, brushed her almost-blonde hair that was identical to her older brother's and tied it into a ponytail with a red ribbon, then headed outside.
"There you are!" Aiken exclaimed. Brooke fake-pouted.
"Wasn't that long!" A few moments passed, and then they broke out laughing.
"Right-o, then, let's get to it. We'll weed the gardens, then I'll feed the chickens while you water it, okay?" Aiken said. Brooke nodded, though it was unnecessary. They knew what the other was thinking all the time anyway.
