Chapter 75

What was I going to do?

"Ummm, cool, cool, cool." That silly reply came to me after Diallo told me he was in love with me.

"Boy if you don't get the hell out of here and leave my roomie alone!" Gay yelled at her brother, grabbed my hand from his, and stood between us. "Why would you even say something dumb like that to her? You have a girlfriend. She has a boyfriend. You both moved on. We don't have time for your games."

"I'm not playing a game, Rave. I'm serious about how I feel."

I did not know what to say to that. I could not even look at him. What could I do?

I ran to my room closed the door and locked it. It felt like my body was on fire because I did not want to deal with this. My anxiety level was at twelve and I felt like I could not breathe. All because this boy I first fell for told me he loved me.

Why couldn't he say or show me how he felt when we were together?

Was this more of the mind tricks he liked to play? His controlling nature trying to control me.

No, the question was...did I still have feelings for Diallo?

I took a deep breath. I needed to calm down and sleep on it.

In the morning I called King to see how he was doing.

"On my way back soon."

"Did you have fun at home?"

"It's fine, but I miss you."

That made me smile so hard. What was I so anxious about yesterday? I nearly forgot because King always made me feel as though I made the right choice.

"I miss you too. Want to date night when you get back?"

"You know I do. See you soon."

I did not even want to face Gay and see what she had to say, but when I went out of the room to find something to eat, she was sitting on the sofa eating a bowl of cereal.

"The annoying boy will not bother you again."

"Why did he say that to me? I...I didn't know what to say back to him."

"Absolutely nothing. I wish I could tell you what his problem is, but alas, I cannot. We may share DNA, but his brain is on another level. Come on, sit with me."

I sat beside her on the couch, grabbed the box of cereal in front of her, and dug in. I knew it was gross, but whatever.

"I love my brother I do...but you can not like a person you love at the same time. Diallo has been there for me when I needed him like a big brother should. But he also annoys me and uses his big brother-ism to treat me like a child. He wants things his way. Follow his rules. Do as he says. Even in relationships, I guess."

"Everything with us was fine at first. I thought Diallo was the perfect guy," I admitted to her. "So sweet the way he would know my drink and have it waiting for me-"

"Come on Rayvn, you're acting like he was Prince Charming when he was doing the bare minimum. I know he was your first boyfriend and all, but seriously, you deserve better."

"How am I supposed to know...that Diallo is not the one?"

"I can't tell you that. But I think you know the answer to that." Gay nudged me with an elbow. "I told him unless he hears from you that you are madly in love with him or something, leave you alone. No harassment at all. You've had enough of that."

The rest of the day while waiting for King to get back, I cleaned my room, our living room area, the kitchenette, and the bathroom. Then I took a long shower and dressed in something cute. A green springtime dress that fit every little curve I had. I topped it with some cheap jewelry that matched. I even did my make-up. Date night was about to be lit!

When I checked my phone, King texted that he was waiting in the lobby.

I was so happy to see him.

"Look at you, always cute," was the first thing he said to me.

My heart swooned every time King smiled at me. I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tight.

"So I guess you did miss me," he chuckled and tickled my side.

"Stop!" I said through a giggle. "Come on, let's get out of here."

We walked hand in hand to his car, then stopped by the passenger side. He pulled me close to him and kissed me like it was our first time.

"I really, really missed you, Rave. What are we going to do when it's summer break and we're miles apart?"

Ugh! The end of the school year was near and I did not want to think about it. I already made my plans, and that was to be home with family. Surely King wanted to be home with his.

"Well, we both have cars, we can drive and visit each other, facetime every day and-"

"Yeah, not the same. Let's not think about it right now, let's go have a great date night."

He held the door open for me and helped me in before going to his side, then off we went.

"Where are we off to? I'm a little hungry."

He grinned at me. "Always, little Rave."

"I'm just saying, food is the way to my heart King. Good food! And a lot of food."

"Yeah, your father mentioned something like that."

We never did talk about what my father talked about with him. Except that he told him my favorite food. What else did he say to him?

"Did my father tell you I'm the best big sister in the world? Ask Symone, Jalon, or AJ. I think they should write a book about how great I am."

He snickered at me. "Yeah, you're great all right."

"You have to meet Angel next time. She is the best!"

"You haven't met my mom yet. I told her about you."

"Oh yeah?" I was not the least bit intimidated by that. She could not be any worse than Diallo's mother.

I was shocked that King did not drive far, we were still on campus when he pulled up into the parking lot near his residence hall.

"We're hanging out in your room?" I was expecting him to take me to a movie, or an activity, like bowling or the game room, even walking around the mall, or something that would be like a real date night. Hanging out in his room was fine, but why'd I get so glam to do that?

"So you're saying you don't want to hang out with me?"

"I didn't say that, I just...thought we were...nothing," I mumbled the last part.

Stop being ungrateful Rayvn Lawrence. I was spending time with the boy I was crazy about. That is all that mattered.

"Come on," he said as we exited the car and he took my hand. "I would not steer you wrong."

I have been dating King for almost two months now, and I have never been to his room. We always hung out in my room or other places around campus. This would be special then.

His residence hall was not suites like mine, just bedrooms. I knew he had a roommate that he rarely talked about, I hadn't even met him. I wondered if King was messy or would his room be neat. Surely he cleaned his room knowing I would be over. Maybe he stuffed everything in the closet and if opened it would all fall out.

We took the elevator up, and King was on the top floor, the tenth.

"Is your floor co-ed?"

"No, it's all guys. I'm shocked it's so quiet right now." King unlocked his door and when it opened, I saw that...

There was a romantic candlelight table in the middle of his room!

"What's going on?"

"I cooked us dinner."

"Huh? In your room?"

"No Rave, I made it at home and brought it all back with me. Kept it warm and set everything up here before I went to get you. My roommate will be gone for a while, so it's just us." He put his arms around me and kissed my cheek. "I made your favorite, I hope I did okay."

My mouth opened so wide. He did all this for me? There were fresh flowers on one desk, both beds and some on my chair, a candle in the middle of the small but cozy table, plates set on the table, and food in pans sitting on the other desk.

And yes, the room was neat and clean!

"King, really? Why did you do all this for me?"

"Why not? You've been having a rough few weeks, and I know we're still just getting to know each other as more than just friends, and I wanted to show you how much I care about you."

"Did my father put you up to this?"

"All he told me was your favorite dish and gave me his recipe." He gently rubbed my cheek. "And said to treat his princess well."

King was too good to be true. How did I deserve a guy like this?

"Come on, let me feed you because you already said you were starving."

He went to uncover the dishes and there was my favorite, mostaccioli, then a chopped salad that looked like one of those bag kits, but hey, I was still going to smash it. Then there were fried chicken wings. He must have talked to my father because I loved that with my mostaccioli. It was like the great debate, was spaghetti a side or a main dish, but with a different pasta. To me, it was both.

I wanted it all.

I made a plate that was lady-like...at first, then I added some more because forget Angel's rule of not eating like a pig. I wanted to stuff my face.

"I like a girl that can eat and is not afraid to eat around me."

"You ain't said but a word." I picked up the flowers he placed on my chair. "This was sweet. I love flowers."

I sat them on the table and took my seat. I did not even wait for King to sit down, I dug into the pasta first. It was heaven. I took another bite before I even swallowed the first.

"How is it?"

"If I close my eyes I think I am eating my father's. You follow instructions well."

"Pretty easy. My mom never made it, but I shared some with her and she liked it."

I bit into one of the wings. "Oh, this is good too! You made this or ordered from somewhere?"

"I made it myself, little Rave," he chuckled at me. "And I don't need anyone else to tell me how to fry some wings. I got that."

I wriggled around in my seat doing the happy dance you do when food is good. "If I knew I was eating this good for dinner I would have skipped breakfast."

"There's dessert as well. Peach cobbler."

I dropped the chicken bone I was gnawing on. "Shut the front door? You made that too?"

He blushed a bit at that. "No. When my mom saw me cooking for you, she offered to make dessert."

I ate good. I ate a lot. The mostaccioli was spot on. The chicken seasoned and fried hard and crisp. The salad even tasted better than any salad I've ever had. The peach cobbler was heaven in my mouth.

"I'm glad you enjoyed it." King leaned over to me, took his thumb, and wiped my face near my mouth. "I know it's good when you get it all over your face."

I inwardly groaned and grabbed a napkin to wipe my mouth. Okay, I didn't care much that King saw me eating like a pig. It did not have him running scared from me. I was being me, and that me he still liked.

Angel was wrong about something after all.

"Thanks, King, for doing this for me."

"I'll wrap everything up so you can have leftovers."

"Can we hang out a bit more, I just want to be here with you."

"Sure, babe."

We kicked off our shoes and lay in his bed. I needed the rest after that big meal. I cuddled close to him, and he wrapped his arms around me. I let my head rest on his chest, hoping I did not fall asleep because I felt so comfortable.

"This is only the beginning, fresh," King whispered in my ear.

A/N: How did you all like this chapter? A lot of things I dropped in here, tying this story to Hook an Angel. The meal, the cooking, the "pretty girls don't eat like pigs," and their relationship compared to Hook and Angel. This whole book I wanted to connect the two books in ways, show how parents affect their kids as they enter adulthood, as well as "finding the one."

Hook took years to find his one. His daughter may have found hers already. Let's hope!
