Chapter 41
Homecoming weekend was over, my friends were gone and I was alone Sunday night in my room sulking because I was no longer talking to my roommates.
Now what was I going to do? I did not make friends so easily. I would spend the rest of the year all alone, with no one to talk to. Well, I came for a degree, not friends. I cracked my book open and tried to study but my brain kept getting distracted.
Maybe I should apologize to my suitemates?
Maybe I needed to get a new room assignment?
Maybe I needed to transfer and go to college in St. Louis. There I could be closer to my family. I missed them.
I grabbed my phone and went through Angel's Instagram account which was always popping. She was looking very pregnant, but so cute. I could not wait to get home and rub her stomach. And eat lots of food. Maybe I would help with her Black Friday sales after Thanksgiving at the store.
That made me smile and finish my work. The best gift I could give my parents was the news of good grades. I finished my work and then crept out of my room, ignoring my suitemates sitting on the sofa talking loudly about me.
"She better leave!"
"Can't even speak, but whatever."
I was not down for any of that today. I left the suite and went to see Diallo. I didn't even have to knock, his door was open and he was there with his sister. The television was on and they both were watching Grown-ish, my favorite show. Their mother left early in the morning after she had breakfast with them, and Diallo wanted to unwind after spending all day Saturday with her.
"Hey guys, can I hide out here? It's like the Arctic Circle in my room."
"Why?" Diallo asked, even though I told him everything that was going on.
"Because her roommates are bitches," Gay said and pulled me down to sit in between her and Diallo. "They actually called and told me to not talk to you anymore because of what your St. Louis friends did, but what does that have to do with me? You are still my lil homie."
"Thanks." It was nice to still have Gay to talk to, even though she and I were on different planets as far as I could tell.
"You want me to talk to them and get them straight?" Diallo asked.
"No!"
"For real. It's part of my RA duties to make sure suitemates, roommates, everyone is getting along."
Gay rolled her eyes at that. "Listen, fuck those hoes. I never liked them anyway."
I did not believe that. Gay seemed cool with everyone.
"Didn't you..." I looked to Diallo then whispered to Gay. "Didn't you make out with Allura?" I did not know how much of her business she wanted Diallo to know, so I did not want her to get mad at me as well for spilling her business.
"Just a couple of kisses," she said with a grin, then winked at me. "I kiss a lot of girls, means nothing. Lots of girls want to explore, and hey, I'm here for it."
Diallo pulled me towards him. "Don't kiss my girlfriend."
I turned red. For real, yes, I'm brown-skinned, but surely I turned red from shock, embarrassment, and fear. I kissed his sister. And liked it! I think I started to hyperventilate as if he could read my face and already knew my dirty deed.
This was the perfect time to tell him, and I opened my mouth to say it when Gay said something first.
"I knew you liked her, why would I kiss her, bro," And just like that, Gay and I had a secret that would never be told. I was not ever telling, and surely she felt the same. I better forever stay on her good side, or else she would rat me out.
I spent the rest of the evening hanging with my boyfriend and his sister, It turned out to be fun and relaxing at the same time. Around midnight I finally made it to my room, with Gay spending the night sleeping on his sofa.
Bright and early, I left for class before my roommates, even though we typically walked together to English 101. This was about to be the most awkward week.
This was the first time I was ever early to a class since starting college. As I was entering class, I ran right into King.
"Hey, Fresh."
I rolled my eyes at that nickname. "Hey, how's it going?"
"Looks like you had too much fun Homecoming weekend. Freshmen tend to go hard and all out like y'all don't have any sense."
I gave him a playful push. "It was nothing like that. Although, I did enjoy myself...well, most of it." He did not need to know every detail.
When I followed him down to his seat in the middle of the classroom, versus the back where I usually sat with Allura and Twyla, he looked over at me.
"Where are your friends?"
"Suitemates, not friends," I said, dropping my bag on the tabletop. "We just need some distance for a while."
I grabbed my laptop out of my bag and got it ready to take notes in class. We have two papers due before Thanksgiving Break. I was finished with one and had not started the other.
King didn't say anything else, just prepared for class as well. Right before the start of class, I looked back just in time to see my roommates, Donnell, and Rich walk in. I squinted my eyes as I looked at Donnell. Was he being true to my friend Chantell? I had to know if he was playing them both.
How would I do that?
"King, I need some guy advice."
"What? Problems with the happy couple already?"
"Huh? No, not me and Diallo...someone else. Can we talk after class?"
"Sure, Fresh."
Diallo would never give it to me straight about Donnell. I just had to know the real deal. Soon as class ended, I rushed out with King at my side. I side-eyed my suitemates and they seemed to be ignoring me. Good. King and I walked outside and I sat at a nearby bench and he did as well.
"So what's up Fresh, tell me what is going on."
I babbled to him about everything that was going on, from Twyla and Donnell to having hooked up several times, to Donnell saying he had lots of girls around campus he linked up with, and then how my friend Chantel was somehow swooped into his web. I told him how Chantell thought he was serious about her, but Twyla was obsessed with him. How they fought over him, and how I defended my friends and now possibly was enemy number one to them.
I let out a deep sigh after I told him everything, and then I waited to hear what the wise King would say.
"I get that you want to protect your friend Chantell...but shorty, this ain't your business."
Now, why did I tell him all that and think he would help me? I started to stand up and leave but he pulled my arm to sit back down, even closer to him.
"But wait, since you're all in it now, from a guy's perspective...hell yeah, he's playing your girl. Let's just say he has changed his ways for your girl, dogs don't change their spots like that fast. He still out here doing whatever, especially since your girl is how many miles away? Just saying, that's on her though, she's deciding to be with him."
"So there's is nothing I can do?"
"Not a damn thing but sit back and let it ride out."
"Maybe if I get proof-"
"Stay out of it Rayvn. As for your roommate situation, you can't live like that with two people going to harass you where you sleep. Your boy's an RA, right? Get with him and get a room change or something. You don't have to stay there."
The thought never crossed my mind to move. I did not want to move. I like where I was. I liked living on the same floor as Diallo. I did not want to pack all my things and lug them somewhere else, maybe in a different building.
But those were things I thought about the rest of the day. I spent most of the day out of my room, around campus, anywhere but in that room, and miserable. I text Diallo if he was free for dinner later as I was finally heading back, and he did not reply right away. Soon as I made it to my floor, I stopped to see Diallo.
His door was closed and there was a message on his board that he was on duty, but he was not in his room. I had no choice but to go to my room.
When I opened the door and entered, Allura and Twyla were sitting there, talking, but quickly shut up when they saw me.
"Hey." I would be friendly and not continue to ignore them.
"Now she speaks," Allura scoffed.
"Guys, can we just get along? Be cordial, we don't have to pretend we're besties or anything." I went to the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of juice, and waited for one of them to say something. I checked my phone, but still no reply from Diallo.
"Yeah, you have plenty of besties...and boyfriends," Allura stated.
"What are you talking about?"
My phone finally buzzed in my hand, it was Diallo of course. I glanced at it, but then my blood went cold.
We're over Rayvn, don't text me anymore
What? The? Actual Hell?
"Oh yeah, we told Diallo all about your other boyfriend King," Twyla said with a smile.
They were just being evil for no reason. I had to fix this.
A/N: I felt like I needed a LOT more drama, make this a whole bunch of "misunderstandings" as happens at this age. So many thoughts on this.
One, Rayvn is a little wrong for seeking advice from King, but that's neither here nor there.
Two, Diallo is VERY wrong for breaking up with her in a text!
Three, her roommates need their a$$ beat!
