{10} I AM GOODE HIGH SCHOOL'S OFFICIAL TOUR GUIDE {10}

Sunday, 4-22-18

Sunday was a very calm, relaxed day. I slept in until almost eleven. When I did force myself out from my warm covers, my mom had made me breakfast. I happily ate my eggs, toast, and bacon without thinking about much other than how good it tasted.

I spent the majority of the afternoon listening to music and discovering songs that I had never heard. Around five o'clock, I heard a light knock on the door.

"Yeah?" I called.

"It's Paul, can I come in?"

"Sure."

He opened the door and entered. I sat up on my bed and gestured for him to sit.

"What's up?" I asked, slightly concerned. Don't get me wrong, I really loved Paul, but we didn't typically just have chats in my bedroom.

"I have a few things to say. First of all, I'm actually very proud of you and your improvement. I know it's only been a few days studying with Annabeth, but I can tell she's very good for you."

I smiled. "Yeah, I appreciate her."

Paul nodded. "Well, make sure you keep doing these homework dates, they are very beneficial. Beside that, I have a request for you."

"Oh boy," I sighed.

He chuckled. "It shouldn't be difficult. There's a new girl coming to school tomorrow. You know on a personal level how difficult it was to be the new kid, so I want you to take her under your wing. And before you make any assumptions, remember that she is a sophomore - like you - coming to a new school for the last semester - like you have countless times."

I closed my eyes and thought for a moment. "How long would I need to be with her? Just until she gets comfortable here?"

"Yeah, probably. But don't think of it as a task or a mission, think of it as a personal kindness from you to her."

"Sure, whatever. She starts tomorrow, you say? Where will I find her?"

"Just meet her at the main entrance, ten minutes before the first bell. I won't mark you tardy if you end up late for my class. Just give her a small tour, get to know her a bit, and make sure you act friendly."

"Alright. Hey, is dinner almost ready?"

He grinned. "Yep. It's hamburgers tonight."

Monday, 4-23-18

I set my alarm ten minutes early, so on Monday morning I woke up very grumpy. I let myself lay there for a minute, before jumping out of bed and running to the kitchen.

"Morning, Mom," I said.

"Hey, Perce! Do you want some breakfast?"

"I'll just have cereal. I've got it, though."

I ate my Captain Crunch kind of fast, and quickly washed my dishes. I took off to my bedroom and searched for a presentable outfit. I didn't want to scare the new girl by showing up in a biker's outfit, now did I?

I eventually decided on a pair of plain, medium wash jeans and a green tee shirt. I looked in the mirror we had in the bathroom and attempted to make my hair tame, but it hardly cooperated. I usually let the dark strands fall however they wanted to. That day, I tried to style it and it ended up looking exactly the same as usual, if not worse.

I sighed, giving up. I glanced at the clock and almost swore. It was later than I had expected.

I rushed to the door, bag strewn over my shoulder. I shoved my black high top Converse on and rushed out the door, shouting, "Bye!"

When I arrived at Annabeth's house, I could tell she was surprised.

"Wow," she said after she opened the door.

I looked at myself nervously. "What?" I asked. "Is it the jeans?"

She chuckled. "No, your clothes are fine. Your shirt really brings out your green eyes, actually. It's just...your hair."

I blushed and rolled my eyes. "Shut up," I mumbled.

"Come in," she said, gesturing for me to follow her.

"What? We're going to be late!" I exclaimed.

"It'll be fine."

I sat down on one of the barstools, as instructed. Annabeth began working her hands through my messy hair, trying to make it neat.

I shut my eyes, savoring the feeling.

She changed methods and tried flattening the back, while fluffing up the front. I felt her stop and opened my eyes.

Annabeth was bent down in front of me, inspecting her work.

"Yeah, that's pretty good." She smiled. "Ready?"

I blushed - again - and nodded. We sped walked all the way to school and made it five minutes before the bell rang.

"Come with me to the office," I said.

Her eyes were wide. "What? We only have a few minutes before the bell."

"Paul wants me to hang out with the new girl. That's why I'm dressed like this. I don't want to scare her away before we even talk."

"Oh. Fine, let's go."

We practically ran to the main office. As we were rushing down that hallway, I saw an unfamiliar girl standing by herself, looking desolate. I decided that must be her.

I came to a halting stop a few feet away from her. I calmly walked toward her, Annabeth a few steps behind.

"Hey, are you new?" I asked casually.

She nodded. "Yeah, I'm waiting for some sort of guide. They were supposed to be here five minutes ago."

I sheepishly smiled. "Sorry about that." I stuck my hand out, and she tentatively shook it. "Nice to meet you. My name's Percy Jackson."

"Oh, hey there. My name is Calypso Nightshade, but most people call me Caly." (She pronounced her nickname Cal-ee)

I grinned at her. "This is my friend, Annabeth Chase. She's probably stressing that she's late for class."

Annabeth playfully glared at me. "Actually, I have got to get going. I have no official reason to be here, and I don't want to compromise Paul's job. Bye, guys."

"Nice meeting you, Annabeth," Calypso said sweetly, delicately waving.

"See you later, Wise Girl."

She sarcastically waved and rolled her eyes, walking away.

"Let's get started," I said to Calypso

She wearily smiled at me. "How long have you gone to this school?"

"I came to Goode my freshman year. It's the only school that has let me come back for more than one year, actually."

She rose her eyebrows. "Really? So you're a troublemaker, then? Why are you giving me a tour?"

I laughed. "My step dad, Paul Blofis, works here. He knows how I really am. He's the one that actually convinced the school board to let me stay, after they'd seen my records." I looked at her, on my right. "Where did you live before coming here?" I asked.

"California."

"Annabeth lived there when she was younger," I told her. "Only for about a year, though."

"Nice."

"Well, this is the art wing. They have the music classes, pottery classes, painting, architecture, and drawing rooms down there. I only take music because it's required to have an art each year."

Calypso laughed. "You don't like typical art class? You're too manly, I assume."

I lightly blushed. "Whatever. This is the science wing. Physics, biology, chemistry, marine biology, but also math classes, like algebra and geometry, as well as pre calculus. I take physics and marine biology, as well as algebra."

"You like the ocean, then?"

I nodded. "Yep. My dad - my real one - used to take me there all of the time as a kid. It reminds me of him."

She looked up at me, her big brown doe eyes wide with sympathy. Calypso was much shorter than me, probably about five feet six inches, while I was nearing six feet tall. She had long, pin straight, light brown hair. Her small nose was dusted with freckles, and her pink lips were parted, surprised. She didn't seem to be wearing makeup, relying on natural beauty like Annabeth.

I looked straight, trying not to let Calypso see the blush coating my cheeks.

"These are all of the club rooms. We have a lot of them, and I'm sure you'll end up getting a list from some authority, but a few of the more popular ones are yearbook club, gardening club, art club, and book club. I don't participate in any, though.

"This is the gym, and connecting to it is an indoor pool. I am on the swim team. Our final meet of the season is coming up soon, if you want to come."

"Are you any good?"

I grinned. "One of the bests on the team, some would say. If I do well in my events this meet, I'll be promoted to captain."

Calypso smiled. "Cool."

"Right over here is the principal's office, and the guidance counselor is right behind it. That's the social studies wing, where there is not only history class and geography, but also culture classes and mythology classes. I take Greek mythology and geography."

"I take both of those," she told me. "Maybe we match up."

I smiled. "Maybe. Finally, we have the English wing. There's two different classes, just because it's a requirement for every year. I have Mr. Blofis first period, and I heard you do too. So, any questions before we head to class?"

"Can I compare schedules with you? I want to know if I need to find more friends here so I'm not lonely in my classes."

"I get it," I said. "I have English, obviously, first period, geography second, algebra third, physics fourth, then lunch. After lunch I have marine biology, music, Greek mythology, then gym last.

"Nice, I share first, second, sixth, seventh, and eighth with you."

"What are your math and science classes?"

"Geometry and biology," Calypso answered.

"Annabeth has biology fourth period," I stated.

"I don't think she likes me very much.

"She's just not great with new people."

"Sure. Do you know anyone with home ec. straight after lunch?"

I shook my head. "Sorry."

She smiled. "No worries. Ready for class?"

I opened the door to Paul's classroom. "After you, Caly."

As I entered behind her, I heard Paul's bellowing chuckle.

"When I told you I would allow a late entry, I didn't think you would miss over half of my class, Mr. Jackson."

I sheepishly smiled with a flushed face. "Sorry, sir. I was late coming to school this morning, so I got a late start with Caly."

He grinned. "Take a seat, Percy. We were just passing out homework!"

I groaned. The day had been going so well. Why, homework? Why?!
