Chapter 25: The Sounds of Treason

"No," the king said.

"But father--" James tried.

"All that is on that ship are supplies," King Henry replied. "Nothing The Jackal would want or need."

"That's not true!" I insisted.

"I know the business in my kingdom, young lady!" the king boomed.

"Not all of it," I mumbled under my breath.

Then I rose from my chair and left the room, James following close behind.

"What did you mean 'not all of it'?" he asked once we were out of earshot and far away from any nosey guards or servants.

"I don't want to talk about it," I answered.

"What are we going to do about the ship?" James asked.

"We still need to go," I said. "I know he'll be there."

"So, what is it that he wants so badly?"

"It's a map that leads to a forgotten mine."

"How do you know it will be on that ship?"

"Can we go to your tree?" I asked suddenly looking around the fancy halls nervously. "I don't feel comfortable talking here."

"Of course," James replied.

When we arrived, I immediately went to my spot by the fire.

"The Treasure of the Seven Kingdoms has been around for hundreds of years," I began. "It was forgotten after a mining accident fifty years ago. It became too dangerous to be mined, so no one ever went back."

"What were they mining?" James asked.

"A rare substance that can only be found here in the Kingdom of Arelenes," I replied.

"What is it used for?"

"I'm not sure," I replied. "But I'm guessing The Jackal knows."

"So, what was this talk about a map?"

"It's the only way to find the mine. It's deep inside a cave that is impossible to navigate without a map."

James seemed to think for a minute before continuing.

"How do you know this map will be on the ship?"

"It's not. The Jackal isn't going after a scroll or scrap of paper. He's going after a person. A prisoner."

"Why?"

"Because this prisoner is the only known human that has the map in his head. All other records were destroyed. But when you have a photographic memory, it isn't that easy."

"Wait, are you saying The Jackal is going to try to free that prisoner?"

I nodded grimly. "And he won't care who he kills in the process. That's why we need to capture him before he does any damage."

"It's supposed to dock near sunset--"

"He's not going to wait for it to dock. If he does, the sailors on board would have help from the people on land. And if anyone stands in their way, they can just throw them overboard. Drown and dead."

"Are you saying they're going to attack the boat...in the middle of the ocean?"

"Well, not in the middle. But far enough from shore that no one will be able to notice and come to the rescue."

"We need to warn my dad..." James said.

"You think he'll listen? He probably won't even believe me."

"What do you mean?"

"The king doesn't know there will be a prisoner on that ship. He thinks it's just supplies."

"What? Why not?"

"Like I said before, the king doesn't know everything that goes on in his kingdom."

"So, what are we going to do?"

"We're going to stop The Jackal."

"How? If you don't tell my father, we won't have--"

"Exactly," I replied.

"I don't know, Lily..."

"If a whole army of the king's soldiers couldn't take down The Jackal, or even keep him from kiddnapping the king and queen, what makes you think only a few of them can? I told you, your father doesn't know what he's up against. And he's going about it all wrong."

"Lily, that sounds like treason."

"Fine," I snapped. "Let them put me away to rot in a cell. But when The Jackal goes after the royal family next, don't come running to me."

I left without another word and went strait home and up to my bedroom.

I plopped on my bed and stared up at my ceiling.

It was full of arrows, knives, and throwing stars I had thrown over the years. For some reason it was comforting.

Or maybe it was my comfy bed.

Or that anything was better than thinking about James.

I was sure he never wanted to talk to me again. Not after my outburst and sudden departure. Why was life getting so complicated?

I used to not worry about going against royalty...

But now?

There was James.

The thoughts in my head were against everything I had taught myself over the years. I was actually thinking of obeying the king.

The king.

The same awful royal who had given up on my father.

Who had given up on the rest of the people who had gone missing.

The king who didn't care about his people.

No.

I would get on that ship and take down The Jackal once and for all.

Even if I had no one to back me up.

No one to help me.

I could do it on my own.

I was Lily Rose.

Legendary.

A/N Please comment! I love seeing notifications when I get into my account. It's the highlight of my day!

Ciao,

SiSi

Also I changed Lily's father's story to he disappeared, not died. I hope you like it! And please let me know if I missed a part of the story when I changed Lily's father's story. Phew. What a mouth-full. Lily's father's story. Lily's father's story...

Okay, I got distracted and started rambling.

Anyway.

Thanks for reading!

Also I added the last part recently, because I decided the next chapter was too short so I just combined them.
