September 2nd

Dear Kathy Bear,

Your letter made my day. Everything here is so different and cool. We rode a train to the school. I made a friend. His name is Ron Weasley, he is very funny and has a pet rat, Scabbers. He has five brothers and a little sister. They all have the same red hair and pale skin dotted with freckles. Anyways, we left the train and found Hagrid yelling for all the first years to get on boats that moved on their own across a big lake. Hogwarts is huge!!! It's a giant castle with talking portraits and moving staircases. I am going to get so lost. Before dinner, we, first years, had to get sorted. A woman with a tight bun named Professor McGonagall would call us up in front of the entire hall and have us sit on a stool and put an old pointy hat on top of our heads. The hat was magic and would look into our heads and shout out our house. I'm in Gryffindor!!! Ron and his whole family, plus mom and dad, were in Gryffindor; it is the house of the brave. After I was sorted I ran over and sat next to Ron as we waited for everyone else to get sorted too.

The Hall itself is amazing; there are floating candles that light up the room and the ceiling is enchanted to look like the sky outside. After everyone was sorted the headmaster, Dumbledor, made a speech, saying some weird words and waving his hands around. Food suddenly appeared on all the tables. There were so many choices. I ate until I was full and then we were led upstairs to our dorms. Our common room is hidden by a painting of a fat lady and we have to tell her a password for her to let us in. Our rooms are great. We have four-poster beds with soundproof curtains, I think it was magic. I love this place a lot. I can't wait for you to get here! I have to get ready for my first day now I miss you.

Dear Harry,

That sounds so great I can't wait to get there either. How are your classes? Are you learning anything interesting, or are they just lecturing? I would love a picture of you and this Ron person. Have you made any more friends or, is he so far? Sorry for such a short letter, the school has given me a lot of work to do. I got your Christmas present today, I know it is early, but you will love it. I hope you have a wonderful day, write to me soon.
