Chapter 17
Walking, arms locked together, down the hall Lily and Draco discuss their plans for Christmas. Having stayed the year before Lily enjoyed staying at Hogwarts but planned to return to the Dursleys this year. After the fiasco with Aunt Marge, she was no longer sure what to do anymore.
After explaining this to Draco he is struck with a wonderful idea. "You should come to stay with me this Christmas, my family will be hosting the annual Pureblood Christmas Party this year. It's going to be a lot of fun, almost everyone from Slytherin will be there and we have lots of traditions. The Adults stay mostly together having a lot of dances and wine and we kids go to our separate ballroom. There will be magical Christmas crackers, enchanted cakes, and decorations, pin the wings on the hippogriff, and find the theme-decorated yule log hidden in the manor. It is all great fun!" Draco lights up with excitement for the festivities.
Lily is unsure, that all sounds incredible but she just doesn't know. "I couldn't possibly intrude, I am not a pureblood Draco."
He lets out a scoff, "No one would dare say anything, please." He stops them, giving her his best puppy eyes. She looks at him trying not to give in when she notices that his eyes are not the same color. One is a brilliant grey, which the other appears to mimic, but looking closer she can see that it is nothing more than a pale blue. This distracts her long enough for Draco to link their arms and begin walking once more with a declaration that she can have a few days to think about it but he will be writing to his mother to let her know she is invited.
Letting it go they enter the common room, sitting and beginning their charms homework together, though they are learning different subjects they enjoy their discussions together.
They work through most of it when Blaise and Theodore walk through the room, noses pressed in a book whispering back and forth.
"What are you two whispering about," Draco asks them. The boys jump Theo hiding it behind his back.
"Potions homework," "History book," they simultaneously shout before exchanging looks.
"History book," "Potions homework," they then switch.
Draco gives them a suspicious look, he rolls his eyes and holds out his hand. "Well I happen to be very good at both, let us take a look then."
Blaise groans, grabbing the book he walks and sits between the two on the couch. "Fine! Do you want to know? This is what we were looking at." He shows them the cover of the book, Familiars, What's Familiar and What Isn't By: Newt Scamander, is a book on familiars. What they don't know is why they were hiding it. Theodore joins them, sitting on the floor in front of the couch and flips to the page they were looking at.
With a sigh he explains, "We took it from the restricted section when we saw Mandy Frostgrove go in there. We wanted to just take a look around but she didn't stay long so we just grabbed the first book we saw and ran. We picked a good one too. This page is about turning your Familiar human, even if just for a little while. We were thinking it would be cool to turn some of our pets human for a few hours, just to see if they like us or if they want to kill us. You know, the usual."
They all want to try it, but they aren't sure if it will work and they don't want to risk hurting any of their pets. Theodore says he has a plan but wants them to go ahead and start making the potion. Walking to the guy's dorm they set up Draco's cauldron while Lily gathers all the ingredients for the potion from her room as well as an empty notebook she got over the summer and Claude and Snuffles. Theodore leaves and they begin simmering this and cutting up that. Working all together Lily writes out what they do when and they make slight adjustments to the potion as they go in accordance to their previous potion knowledge.
Once the potion is almost complete it has been a few hours and Theo returns, toad clutched in his hands. Lily takes the toad, looking at him closely.
"Whose this little guy? Where did you get a toad from?" She inquires.
Theo goes white, rubbing the back of his head. "Oh uhhh, his name is Trev-Travis! Yeah, Travis. I found him outside near the lake. He should work well."
A few more hours later the potion is finally complete, feeding it to 'Travis' they wait in anticipation. A few minutes go by and they think it hasn't worked when the toad begins convulsing. His skin bubbles more than usual and his bones seem to stretch. As he gets bigger they back up to give him space. Once the transformation is complete there is not a toad but an older gentleman, his skin is a tinge green and his face is covered in warts. He stands, straightening his brown tailcoat. Had you seen him on the street you would just think him a seasick butler with an abnormally large mouth.
His eyes dart about the room, he takes in the absolute lack of colour around him, a room that was once much brightly coloured is seemingly dull and plain. It is a nice rest on his aching head. He rubs his eyes before holding out an old weathered hand to the children.
Lily is the only one who reaches forward to shake it. "Hello Mr. Travis, I am Lily-Kathryn. How do you do?"
'Travis' smiles at her. "I know very well who you are Miss Potter, my name is Trevor, short for Treabhair. I have heard you being very kind to my boy Neville." Lily turns, smacking Theo in the chest.
"You toad-napped Neville's toad?" She is quite upset because what would they have done if he blew up or something?
Trevor holds his hands out. "Oh no miss, it is quite alright. I was lost once again, you see, the lights are just so bright here that I can't see very well. And with my old age, I already don't see one hundred per cent anyway, so I tend to get lost often. It's a shame really, poor Neville always feels terrible because he thinks he's misplaced me, not to mention I may not be able to see well but I hear fine and I know what the children say. I run from him, but I honestly don't, I just get all turned around with all the bright lights and colours that I lose track of him.
The children all feel so bad for the old blinding man that they come up with a plan, toad sunglasses. That way things will not be so bright and he will stay where he would like. Lily and Treabhair sit together as the boys make the alternative potion for turning familiars back into animals. Trevor watches as she casts shrinking and repairing spells on a pair set of sunglasses before sealing them with twine. As they give Trevor the potion she writes a small note to Neville telling him that his toad cannot see in the bright lights and does not wish to get himself lost anymore.
With strict instructions to drop him off outside of Gryffindor Tower, Theo leaves with the toad.
Claude then waddles up, making his little noises and Lily asks him if he would like to be human too, with his little smile they give him some potion, now prepared they watch as his spikes seem to migrate to the top of his head and his extra legs retract into his body.
Before they know what's going on a little boy no older than the age of five is bouncing around the room. His sandy blond hair full of little blue and red streaks stands on end in spikes. He runs around the room talking a mile a minute before running up to Lily and jumping into her arms.
With a laugh, she begins bouncing Claude. "Well isn't someone excited to be human?"
Claude is ecstatic, "Of course I am! I'm finally big enough to give Mommy all the hugs I want!" He practically shouts. At first, they are confused with the honorific but realize that Lily is kind of like his mommy, given that she got him when he was just a baby and she has raised him for two years. Getting down he grabs her hand and begins to drag her out of the room, "Come on! I want to show you all of the secrets I've found around here, they're so cool!" With a promise to be quiet, they get ready to leave.
Draco turns to Snuffles, he has a bit of the potion on a spoon. "Hey buddy, do you want to try it too, be human for a little while?" Snuffles just let out a huff and turn away, which they take to mean no."
Claude turns to them, "No no, Snuffles can do that whenever he wants, he likes being a dog." No one thinks much of it because he is just a kid but Lily turns to Snuffles, wondering how he would do that. Snuffles just pants at her with a toothy smile, tongue hanging out of his mouth.
The little group walk around Hogwarts, trying to keep the rambunctious child out of view of anyone else. It isn't long until they run back into Theo but he has company. The Weasley Twins are very interested in this new child they've added to their posse.
"This wouldn't have anything to do," "With the Toad we just caught," "Mr. Theodore sneaking back into Gryffindor tower," "Would it?" The twins question together.
Claude just smiles at them waving, "Hi Mr. Fred, hi Mr. George, it's me, Claude!"
The twins share mischievous looks. "Tell us how you've done it." They speak in unison.
Taking the twins back to the Boy's Slytherin Dorm, they show them the book and the potion, explaining how they did it. They request their permission to take this potion for a new product of their joke shop. A pair of two pet treats, one to turn them human, and the other to turn them back. Though if you lose the antidote the treat will wear off in two hours. They agree, keeping just enough of the prototype antidote to turn Claude back when he is ready.
Once the red headed boys make off with the rest of both potions and the books the children get ready for bed. Claude borrows some clothing from the boys and they then ask him if he would like to go back to his animal form.
Claude shakes his head with a smile, "No! I wanna stay a human for a little longer, I'll go back tomorrow though."
Lily looks to him, "You don't want to sleep in your bed? Also do you like your bed, and all of the little outfits I have you wear, are those okay?" She asks, curious if he likes the way she's raising him.
Nodding rapidly he quickly speaks. "I love my bed! And my clothes are so nice, I just wish you would take me with you more, looking around the school is fun but I wanna spend time with you mommy!"
That night Claude cuddles up to his mama, sleeping soundly through the night. Lily is tickled pink the next morning carrying Claude down to breakfast his blonde head layed across her shoulder.
Entering the Great Hall it is evident that George and Fred have repurposed the potion and already begun dispersing it as there are many new people all around the hall. In particular a tall, strict looking woman with snow white hair slicked up into a sleek pony tail sits next to Harry, scolding him and Ron for something as she piles food on his plate. Hermione is seen gossiping with a fuzzy haired read-headed man who has many frown lines and glares daggers at Ron. Trevor is seen, human again, sitting beside Neville. He wipes the pudding off of his cheek.
Setting Claude down the two walk hand in hand to Slytherin table where they can see Severus talking to her friends. Suddenly Claude bursts forward sprinting towards them shouting.
"Papa Sev!!" He shouts, crashing into Professor Snape's legs.
Crouching down Severus looks from Claude to Lily in shock, looking into the boy's face he see's absolutely no resemblance to any member of the Potter or Evan's family at all and for the life of him cannot figure out why this child would be calling him Papa or when he would have entered the castle.
"Professor Snape, this is Claude, you know him. Though I know he is much more recognizable as a small chupacabra Lily keeps in her hood. The Weasley twins gave up one of their treat packs earlier and he hasn't wanted to go back just yet." Draco smoothly explains. Claude looks at him confused at this lie but doesn't question it because he doesn't want anyone to get in trouble.
The rest of their day is spent following Severus around during his weekend duties, though he does not mind. Having a small child around again is not so bad after all. By the end of the day Claude is thoroughly exhausted and very much so ready to go back to his easy lizard life. After many hugs he is back in his original form, enjoying a very nice goat pie.
