Chapter 16
DADA with Snape was nothing like she expected, potions class was always a fun time learning, making new things, and a lot of laughter from the Slytheirns but DADA was just miserable. She didn't understand anything, nothing seemed to make sense, and she just wanted to cry. Severus moved very fast and she was worried about asking stupid questions and holding up class. Once class ends she quickly packs up her things and leaves with her head down.
Arriving back to her dorm after class she is greeted by her dormmates and a few other friends getting all decked out in Slytherin garb and rain jackets.
Setting down her things she addresses the room, "What are you guys getting all dressed up for? It is raining cats and dogs out there." She sits on her bed as Ari begins to pull out black sweatpants lined with fur, a large green sweater, black gloves, a large black scarf, her black cloak, and some earmuffs.
Ari hands them to Lily and pulls her to stand, "Lils it's the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff quidditch match, and as you so eloquently put it, it's pouring, so we have to bundle up."
Following directions, Lily wears many layers, thick socks, and boots. As the girls walk to the common room they see a pre-game celebration with the entirety of Slytherin house, even those who won't be in attendance, Draco in the centre of it. Rushing over she gives him a big hug, happy to see him.
Draco hugs her close, laughing as well. As the part Draco takes in her outfit, fingering his cloak he frowns at the material. "Oh no, my darling this simply won't do. I'll be right back, do not go anywhere." Draco rushes back upstairs leaving them with their classmates.
Lily and Ari begin chatting, laughing as some boys in their house start roughhousing. Before things get too crazy Draco rushes back down the stairs with a huge box. It was a dark purple with a lavender bow.
Draco has her sit on the couch and sets the square, shallow box on her lap, "This is a very late birthday present from my mother. She says to tell you a happy birthday from her and she hopes you enjoy it."
Lily excitedly takes off the bow, setting it gently to the side, before lifting the box's lid. Inside is a beautiful fur coat. Gasping she pulls it out, mesmerised by the softness of the light-green fur, she removes her thinner cloak before pulling it on over her clothes tying the sash in place to hold it closed. "Draco, it's beautiful. I can't possibly keep this, it must've cost a fortune." She hugs the coat, turning so he can see it before giving him a shy smile.
Draco smiles, loving the look of the coat, and knowing it'll keep her much warmer than her regular wool cloak would. "Oh yes you can, it's a gift. Don't worry about the cost." He stands before holding out his covered arm, two umbrellas tucked under his other arm. "Now let's get going, the game will start soon."
(This is the coat, it is $811 USD and 647 ish pounds.)
Reaching the castle exit, Lily pulls Draco to a stop before they go out in the rain. "Draco I don't want to ruin the coat, I'll drop it back in my room." Before she can leave Draco stops her, "My mother put charms on it, it's waterproof and self-heating, it'll be fine in the rain. Now come on before we miss it."
He opens one of the large umbrellas, holding it in a way that shields them from the sideways rain. The wind pushes them around, ripping at their clothes and hair, trying to lift them into the darkness. They force their way through the wind, before reaching the stands. Rain drips down from the edges of the tarp, covering the stands, and creating small puddles around them. The wind howls, causing the tarp to flap and strain against its wooden supports, threatening to tear loose at any moment. Finally reaching their seats they unfortunately have to sit in the wet seats, Draco begins to cast umbrella charm after umbrella charm above them, some of their housemates take the idea and before long the entire Slytherin stand is covered in lots of invisible umbrellas, shielding them almost completely. Struggling to see the game through the weather Lily keeps an eye out for Harry, not noticing as Draco and Pansy begin to cast drying charms on everything around them, including her. The Slytherin house cheers on the game, safe from the weather.
It isn't until Snuffles joins them in the stands and sits next to Lily that things begin to change. The dark sky suddenly seems to get darker, Harry completely disappears from view, and the freezing air bites through even Lily's warm cloak, chilling her to the bone. She stands as dark figures begin to drift through the clouds, grabbing Draco's arm. She stands close to him in fear as one dips through the bottom of a cloud, showing a dementor.
"Draco, where's Harry?! Where's Harry?!" She begins to panic, all at once many things happen at once. A small, dark shadow falls from the sky, flipping and turning over and over as it plummets to the ground. Lily's scream is drowned in the screams of those around her, some in fear, some in surprise. Dumbledore stands, and a light shooting from his wand, encapsulates Harry, slowing his fall. And the Dementors attack.
Dozens of dark angels of death sweep through the stands, grabbing students and throwing them out of the way. Those in the other three house boxes scream in fear, water in their eyes, unable to see much but the dark open mouths of screaming dementors. Those in the Slytherin box see perfectly well and wish they couldn't see dark, rotten shadows grab onto their arms, looking into their faces before letting them go, leaving their victims crying and shaking. Those trying to run away were dragged back by their ankles. Lily and Draco cling to each other as they try to run out of the stands when Lily is grabbed by the back of her coat. She screams as she is turned around to see a dementor who seems to smell something on her, it begins to drag her towards the others as she kicks and screams, sobbing in fear. She shakes from the cold as another dementor grabs her other arm. They begin to make a sound only described as a deep, guttural, and distorted noise. It's a mix of electronic static, a low-pitched growl, and an eerie, echoing quality. Imagine a combination of gravelly rumbles and mechanical whirs, all wrapped in a slightly otherworldly echo. (It's the sound an enderman makes.) She realises that they're talking to each other, she didn't know they could talk. Before she can try to escape again Snuffles comes to her defence, he steps forward, barking and growling at the dementors. They swipe at him and he bites one on the hand, it lets out a terrible sort of shrieking cry. It goes to attack when a bright light shines over their heads, hitting it in the chest. It appears to be a deer, light and beautiful. Warm hands grab her under the arms, pulling her to stand as the dementors leap from the tower, flying away. She turns, throwing herself into the arms of the man who sent them away. Severus Snape does not hesitate to hold her close, discontent with her violent shaking. He wipes her tears and picks her up, holding her against his shoulder. Snuffles stands in front of them, shielding them from the dementors that remained. Dumbledore, standing in the middle of the pitch, calls the dementors to him, they all retreat from the stands gathering around him as he yells at them.
The no longer covered stand is flooded by the downpour but Severus pays no mind. He walks with his children and their dog back to the Slytherin common room. He looks at all of his students, shivering, not only from the cold but from fear, wet from the rain, some crying. A feeling sturs in his chest, righteous fury. He sets down a girl he thinks of as his own, setting a wet hand on her head. Looking out he speaks to his students.
"All of you," They go silent, waiting for his instructions. "All of you go get warmed up, a warm shower and some thick pyjamas. When you are done, come back here, I will have a surprise ready by then."
They all glance at one another but decide to get out of their sopping clothes nonetheless. Once she has taken a warm shower, the chill in her bones has lessened and Lily feels a bit better though she shivers still. Entering the dorm she sees a wet Snuffles with his head under her bed, shielding his face as she and her dormmates get into their warmest pyjamas. They drag him from under the bed, bathing him in their bathroom. Once he has been dried and brushed they all walk downstairs together.
They are shocked to see their common room looking completely different. The window opening under the black lake has been covered in jelly stickers that some of her classmates are moving around, casting shimmering colours onto the ground. The entirety of the cold stone floor has been transfigured into a soft fluffy carpet, instead of its usual dark colour a simple yellow. The fireplace, which has never shown much more than a dim flame, is raging with colour-changing flames, a strong warmth blowing through the room. The cold leather couches are not so cold, instead being a smooth pleasant temperature, charmed to change to the ideal body temperature of those that sit.
She and her shivering compatriots walk over to Professor Snape, whom they've never seen out of his school robes. His hair is dry, and almost soft looking, not a hint of its usual grease. And they look at his clothes, surprised by what they see. His school robes once more but completely dry and without their previous mud splatters. He is passing out hot chocolate and a thick sort of biscuit covered in chocolate.
Grabbing her hot chocolate she looks up, observing his face. He had this look on her face, one she had seen many times with her aunt, a sort of false calm. She grabs his forearm, drawing his eyes to her own. He leans down so she can speak quietly.
"Are you alright, Professor Snape?" Severus smiles at her kindness.
He whispers back, "I am well Miss. Lily, it has just been a very long day."
His excuse of tiredness does not fool her, she gives him a look he has seen many times in one much older. "You seem upset, not tired." Crossing her arms she waits for the truth.
Severus sighs, knowing the truth will be revealed. "I suppose I am a bit perturbed, my students have just been attacked, and for what reason? They mistook a girl for a grown killer, you look nothing like that mad man and the fact that they could've easily..." He stops himself, taking a deep breath; there is a subtle tremor in the way his breath hitches, betraying the underlying turmoil within.
Lily looks at him with understanding, he is worried about her. She hugs him suddenly, and his tense body finally relaxes. His mind calmed down, and he was reassured that she was alive and well. He had been so focused on making sure all of his students were well after this encounter that he forgot about himself, he let his worries slip away, the girl he'd come to care for like a daughter was not dead. She, like her mother, had almost been taken from his life. He knows that had this happened he could've never forgiven himself. What else would there be to keep him alive? The love of his life died twelve years ago, to lose the daughter that resembles her so much, he cannot bear the thought of it. With this last bit of reassurance, he feels the last weight of fear and guilt lift off his shoulders, he can breathe again. He continues to serve his students, much more at peace. He can see his Lily with her friends, just hanging out and being kids once more.
